  1. Post update

That's us done for another Saturday. Thanks for your comments, tweets, texts and thoughts this afternoon - see you tomorrow for the small matter of Manchester United v Liverpool...

  2. Post update

    Arsenal 4-1 Newcastle

Borussia Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp is a man who has been linked with replacing Arsene Wenger in the future but his side are having a terrible time of it in the Bundesliga.

Dortmund dropped back into the relegation play-off place after losing to fellow strugglers Hertha Berlin.

Klopp said: "We hear week after week that we are a great team, but this 'awesome' team also has awesome problems."

  3. Post update

    Arsenal 4-1 Newcastle

Arsene Wenger confirms that defender Laurent Koscielny and midfielder Aaron Ramsey will both be missing for at least a couple more weeks. Will Wenger strengthen his squad in January?

  4. Premier League reaction on Twitter

    Arsenal 4-1 Newcastle

    Santi Cazorla scores a penalty

Injured Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil: "Good job Gunners! Great performance and a cheeky penalty by Santi."

  5. Manager reaction

    Arsenal 4-1 Newcastle

    Alan Pardew watches on

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew: "You know with Arsenal there's going to be a chance but it wasn't to be. We didn't play well today and they played well. I don't think many teams would have coped with them. We were sloppy with our passing, but we've been on a fantastic run and this was always going to be a tough game and it didn't work out for us.

"The front three for Arsenal were rested midweek and I think that showed. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was outstanding and he caused us a lot of problems. We play a lot better than that usually. We missed Sissoko and I must look at myself in terms of selection of the team. We need to cope without him because he's not going to play every week. We tried to be ambitious and if that's a fault we have to accept that."

  6. Manager reaction

    Arsenal 4-1 Newcastle

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger: "We had the dynamic that we wanted to have. Scoring early helped because we knew Newcastle had slow starts as well but are very strong in the second half. I think the crowd was behind the team, at some stage a little bit edgy, but overall I think we controlled quite well the game. We're a bit depleted at the back and we responded very well. Olivier Giroud is just coming back from injury and is still not maybe 100% but he can still score goals and is a physical presence."

On signing a centre half in January: "Well yes, with Laurent Koscielny's injury we're a bit cautious and we need cover."

On difficult week: "Look, we won 4-1 at Galatasaray and won 4-1 tonight and we lost, unfortunately, at Stoke and we feel guilty for that. But 99.9% it is people with full respect even when they're not happy. I can take the 0.1% of criticism. Yes, of course, I'm thankful for the fans singing my name at the end of the match, but what you want is for our fans to be happy because we win football games. Our job is to win football games and when we don't do it I understand when they're not happy."

  11. Birthday boys

    Arsenal 4-1 Newcastle

    Santi Cazorla

Santi Cazorla became the fourth different Arsenal player to score on his birthday in the Premier League after Yossi Benayoun, Robert Pires and Paul Merson.

If I had to celebrate one of those birthday nights out, it would be Merse every time...

  12. Post update

    Arsenal 4-1 Newcastle

Arsene Wenger has a smile back on his face as he praises his 'dynamic' side. Full quotes to follow.

  13. Player reaction

    Arsenal 4-1 Newcastle

    Olivier Giroud at full time

Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud on manager Arsene Wenger: "I didn't want to talk a lot about this situation, it's always the same when you're losing a game, it's always like that and the first man in front of the criticism is the boss.

"It's part of our job but we are one pack and we will be always together, so keep the faith, keep working hard and I think there's nothing about a change of boss because he's the man of the situation. It's nice to hear the fans supporting the boss and obviously it's a fantastic night for us and we're pleased and now we have one week rest and we need to prepare well for the next big game at Anfield."

  14. Post update

    Arsenal 4-1 Newcastle

Olivier Giroud says Arsene Wenger 'is still the man.' One win over Newcastle won't change anything for his critics but Wenger has had a good week since departing from Stoke-on-Trent.

  15. Join the debate at #bbcfootball

Jonny Uppingham: Great result for Arsenal. Very impressed with Bellerin/Debuchy today. We chased every ball and Sanchez was wonderful as usual.

Belete Eshetea: The OX man of the match for me!

Evan Pritchard: So, when players exchange shirts at the end of the match, what do they do with them?

Evan asks the most challenging question of the day... would you really want a room filled with other men's smelly shirts? Join the conversation using #bbcfootball on Twitter, send a text to 81111 (UK only), or post a comment on the BBC Sport Facebook or Google+ page.

  16. Post update

    Arsenal 4-1 Newcastle

    Former Newcastle defender John Anderson

BBC Radio Newcastle at the Emirates Stadium

"It's a difficult place for Newcastle to come, there is no doubt about that. Arsenal were the better side throughout the game, and Newcastle didn't create a great deal. Once Arsenal went 3-0 up the confidence soared. You felt after Newcastle scored one back, if they got another one quickly the game could change, but this has been a tough evening for them. They had a go, but the Arsenal goalkeeper wasn't really tested."

  17. Fight for fourth

    Table

Arsenal move level on points with Southampton then, and are just two points behind Manchester United in third. Who will take a top-four spot this season? It looks wide open.

  18. FULL-TIME

    Arsenal 4-1 Newcastle

  19. Post update

    Arsenal 4-1 Newcastle

Lukas Podolski drills a shot wide from 25 yards as the tricks come out of the box for Arsenal now. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is replaced by Ainsley Mailand-Niles for his Premier League debut. He's just 17 years old - named after chef Ainsley Harriott?

  20. Post update

    Arsenal 4-1 Newcastle

    Former Newcastle defender John Anderson

BBC Radio Newcastle at the Emirates Stadium

    Santi Cazorla scores a penalty

"What a good penalty. Although I'm not too sure Santi Cazorla would have done it at 0-0. But in the last minute, when you are already 3-1 up... he put backspin on it as well. Not too sure I would have had the bottle to do that."

  21. GOAL

Arsenal 4-1 Newcastle - Santi Cazorla (Pen 88mins)

    Santi Cazorla celebrates

Santi Cazorla marks his 30th birthday with his second goal of the night, a very calmly taken Panenka of a penalty. Chipped right down the middle, flighted home nicely. Four flatters Arsenal but a good win for the Gunners.

  22. PENALTY to Arsenal

    Arsenal 3-1 Newcastle

Danny Welbeck gets behind Paul Dummett, the full-back leans on the striker, their knees collide and down he goes. Penalty.

  23. SUBSTITUTION

    Arsenal 3-1 Newcastle

Francis Coquelin - back from a loan spell with Charlton - replaces the outstanding Alexis Sanchez.

  24. Post update

    Arsenal 3-1 Newcastle

"There's only one Arsene Wenger" rings around the Emirates Stadium. The fans who booed him at Stoke train station don't appear to be the majority. Not this afternoon anyway.

  25. Post update

    Arsenal 3-1 Newcastle

Into the final 10 minutes. Looks like there could be at least one more goal in this one.

  26. YELLOW CARD

    Arsenal 3-1 Newcastle

Newcastle now having another good spell as they pump two crosses deep into the Arsenal box. That's what Per Mertesacker is for - he heads them away all night. Daryl Janmaat gets booked for kicking the ball away and will miss the League Cup tie in midweek.

    Daryl Janmaat is booked
  27. Post update

Playing on tarmac! A great call. With a tennis ball as well.

  28. Text us on 81111

Dan in Hitchin: Mourinho said last season, "I hate diving. My players know they will be in big trouble with me if they dive. It's very bad. The search of a red card to another player for me is a disgrace." I haven't heard such empty rhetoric other than Arsene Wenger saying he didn't see any of the incidents involving his players being sent off.

Simon in York: Football should be played on tarmac in my opinion. Then you'd applaud players for diving as they're literally putting their body on the line for the team.

Tom: One thing for me which is worse than diving, is waving the imaginary card at the ref! And for all of his talent, Alexis Sanchez is a culprit of that far to often!

Join the conversation using #bbcfootball on Twitter, send a text to 81111 (UK only), or post a comment on the BBC Sport Facebook or Google+ page.

  29. Post update

    Arsenal 3-1 Newcastle

Arsenal have a two-on-one break, they should score but Danny Welbeck's run is poor and he coughs up possession after Alexis Sanchez had played him in. They made the same run there really, Sanchez needed Welbeck to pull wider and force last man Fabricio Coloccini into a tough decision.

  30. Flashback

    Cheick Tiote

Plenty of you are reminiscing about that classic 4-4 draw between these two sides back in February 2011. We all remember Cheick Tiote's last-minute equaliser, but who else scored in that game?

Well, Arsenal went 4-0 up in the first 26 minutes through Theo Walcott, Johan Djourou and Robin van Persie (2). However, Newcastle came roaring back for a point courtesy of two Joey Barton penalties, a Leon Best strike and that long-range blaster from Tiote.

In the final 10 minutes, Newcastle's attack was spearheaded by Nile Ranger. Trying to keep Ranger quiet was Sebastien Squillaci.

  31. Post update

    Arsenal 3-1 Newcastle

Into the last 20 minutes. Arsenal still committing plenty of bodies forward. No sign of a shut-up shop approach yet. One more Newcastle goal would make life interesting...

  32. Text us on 81111

Alistair in Bury: They have a "dubious goals panel". Why not have a "Diving Panel" if adjudged to have dived the player concerned receives a retrospective one game ban, that would soon stop it.

Greg in Hull: Fouls, handballs & diving. All not allowed, but why is diving the only thing people cry about as 'cheating'?

  33. SUBSTITUTION

    Arsenal 3-1 Newcastle

Olivier Giroud will not bag a hat-trick, he's being replaced with 20 minutes to go. On comes Lukas Podolski - to a huge cheer. The German remains popular in the stands, if not in the dugout.

  34. Join the debate at #bbcfootball

David Penn: Newcastle need to keep their discipline now. With our current injury list we cannot afford any more suspensions

Hashim: Arsenal implosion forthcoming. Gunners, take cover.

Paul Harris: As usual Arsenal do the hard work then go to sleep - that's by far our biggest problem and has been for some time.

Ayoze Perez's goal (18:48 BST) has certainly worried some of the Arsenal fans. Does this match have 4-4 written all over it? Let us know using #bbcfootball on Twitter, send a text to 81111 (UK only), or post a comment on the BBC Sport Facebook or Google+ page.

  35. CLOSE!

    Arsenal 3-1 Newcastle

Slapstick stuff at the back from Newcastle as Fabricio Coloccini tries to play a one-two on his own deadball line. He's dispossessed by Danny Welbeck, he tees up Santi Cazorla for a blocked shot, someone else has a swing and it ends up at the feet of Kieran Gibbs. He cracks in a volley which flies into the side-netting. Coloccini has to get rid there. Put it away!

  36. Post update

    Arsenal 3-1 Newcastle

Great run into the box from Hector Bellerin again, he beats two men before his low cross is carved away at the near post. I'm not sure Bellerin is a right-back at heart but he has shown enough today to suggest that he could be a good player somewhere down the line.

  37. Post update

    Arsenal 3-1 Newcastle

Mathieu Flamini once scored a screamer against Newcastle - possibly Kevin Keegan's first game back? - and he has another go from outrageous distance. This time he finds Row L.

  38. Post update

    Arsenal 3-1 Newcastle

    Former Newcastle defender John Anderson

BBC Radio Newcastle at the Emirates Stadium

"Ayoze Perez flicked a good header on the ball, but he didn't even celebrate - and you wonder why because there is still long enough for Newcastle to get back into it."

  39. GOAL

Arsenal 3-1 Newcastle - Ayoze Perez (63 mins)

Where is the marking? Woeful defending from Arsenal as Ayoze Perez is left all alone to meet Jack Colback's free-kick and flick a header into the corner. He had plenty to do but stuck it away very smartly indeed. From nowhere, a lifeline. That's why Henry Whitfield is a pessimist...

  40. Join the debate at #bbcfootball

    Santi Cazorla celebrates

Stacy Phillips: What a brilliant finish from the acutest of angles. Happy birthday Santi Cazorla!

Abdul Said: Where would Arsenal be without Sanchez's goals or assists?

Aaran Higgs: Cazorla doesn't dive, gets a goal. Would a penalty have been given? Would other players have gone down.

Henry Whitfield: Three nil? Feeling comfortable? One word: Anderlecht.

Oh Henry, where is your optimism?

  41. Post update

    Arsenal 3-0 Newcastle

Arsenal have scored with all three of their efforts on target, they have been ruthlessly efficient and Olivier Giroud's finishing has made the difference.

  42. Join the debate at #bbcfootball

Tom Homes: There are so many worse things in football than diving. It's a yellow card and that should be the end of it.

Kuntal Majumdar: I really hope Howard Webb comes out and starts explaining key decisions as a part of his new role.

Matthew Turner: Fine the diver a weeks wages and have the payment donated to a charity.

Diving certainly seems to have divided all of you on the appropriate punishment. Keep your thoughts coming in by using #bbcfootball on Twitter, send a text to 81111 (UK only), or post a comment on the BBC Sport Facebook or Google+ page.

  43. Post update

    Arsenal 3-0 Newcastle

Cheick Tiote was wild when he caught Alexis Sanchez in the first half, and another lunge sees him go into the book. Some really poor tackles going in at times.

  44. Post update

    Arsenal 3-0 Newcastle

    Former Newcastle defender John Anderson

BBC Radio Newcastle at the Emirates Stadium

Olivier Giroud scores at the near post

"The goalkeeper didn't even see that one coming. It is a real smart finish from Olivier Giroud, with the outside of his left foot. Jak Alnwick just did not even see it."

  45. GOAL

Arsenal 3-0 Newcastle - Olivier Giroud (58 mins)

    Olivier Giroud celebrates

How on earth did he get that in?!

Olivier Giroud has his second with an outrageous one-touch finish. He may just be offside as he meets Hector Bellerin's low cross at the near post, but he finishes it brilliantly.

He goes with the outside of his left foot when his right foot appeared much more likely. One touch flicked into the roof of the net off the inside of the post.

  46. Text us on 81111

Matt Turner in Norwich: Andy would it really be interesting to drag referees out at the end of a game to explain themselves? I suspect they would probably say 'I wasn't 100% sure and therefore didn't give the decision or 'I didn't think it was a dive'. Unlikely that exposing a referee to the media would quell any fans sense of injustice or be particularly entertaining.

Russel in Torquay: Diving IS ruining the beautiful game, no question. Since the moment Jay Rodriguez dived against Villa, the game I love just hasn't felt the same, and I'm not sure it ever will again.

Would a public apology have helped Russel?

  47. Post update

    Arsenal 2-0 Newcastle

    Robbie Savage

    606 phone-in on BBC Radio 5 live

"Talk about diving - Fabricio Coloccini dived in and Santi Cazorla could have gone over, but he leaped over it and finished brilliantly. That shows honesty and aggression. He could have gone down, but instead he stayed on his feet and scored a goal."

  48. Post update

    Arsenal 2-0 Newcastle

    Former Newcastle defender John Anderson

BBC Radio Newcastle at the Emirates Stadium

"Good build-up and movement again from Arsenal, Fabricio Coloccini tried to make the tackle, but any challenge and Santi Cazorla gets a penalty. Jak Alnwick did well to close the angle, but it was a lovely finish by Cazorla. Alnwick has not come up against quality like that before."

  49. SUBSTITUTION

    Arsenal 2-0 Newcastle

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew reacts to that goal with two instant subs. On come Remy Cabella and Emmanuel Riviere for Papiss Cisse and Sammy Ameobi.

  50. GOAL

Arsenal 2-0 Newcastle - Santi Cazorla (54 mins)

    Santi Cazorla scores

And there it is! A fine goal, first-class finish from birthday boy Santi Cazorla. Again Alexis Sanchez is the architect, sliding a slick pass into the feet of the Spaniard, he breaks a tackle on the edge of the box, waits for goalkeeper Jak Alnwick to set himself and then slams home into the roof of the net. Excellent goal.

  51. Post update

    Arsenal 1-0 Newcastle

Alexis Sanchez does Mike Williamson with an outrageous dummy on the halfway line and looks like breaking through until Chieck Tiote fells him with a wonderful tackle this time. Game has gone flat, needs a moment to raise the crowd.

  52. Post update

    Arsenal 1-0 Newcastle

Great header again by Olivier Giroud - at the other end this time, clearing his lines as an auxiliary defender at the front post. He gives the Gunners a different dimension.

  53. Text us on 81111

Dan in Reading: Sin bin? No, make the offender lie down in the goal for 15 minutes - humiliate the cheats.

Ben in Bath: What the game needs is an orange card for diving. It won't mean anything during the game, but the incident is looked at after and if found guilty of diving, the player is given a 3 game ban! That would finally get rid of it.

Dave in Andover: In my Sunday pub league team we had a player dive and the manager subbed him and fined him and sat him on the bench the next game even though he was our top scorer.

  54. Post update

    Arsenal 1-0 Newcastle

Referee Lee Mason ticks off Jack Colback for fouling Alexis Sanchez, who has got a bee in his bonnet about some of the challenges put in on him so far. The form Sanchez is in, you have to get at him though, surely?

  55. Post update

    Arsenal 1-0 Newcastle

    Former Newcastle defender John Anderson

BBC Radio Newcastle at the Emirates Stadium

    Sammy Ameobi's cross is blocked

"There will still be chances for Newcastle, but they are going to have to move the ball much quicker. So far they have not asked enough questions of a makeshift Arsenal defence. Per Mertesacker is not the quickest but the Newcastle attack have not run at him."

Man City's midfielder Yaya Toure: Happy to be heading back to Manchester with another three points! Thank you to all those that cheered us on! Special mention to my teammate Frank Lampard - 175 goals in the Premier League! Wow. Always a pleasure to play with him. Top player.

  57. KICK-OFF

    Arsenal 1-0 Newcastle

Back in play at the Arsenal. Can Alan Pardew's visitors raise it a notch?

  58. Post update

    Chelsea 2-0 Hull City

Hull City's David Meyler: Tough game today at Stamford Bridge. Great support from the Hull fans - onto the next game now at home against Swansea. Hopefully get a win.

And Curtis Davies: Glad to return to the starting 11 today. Not the result we wanted but the effort from the lads was great especially, with 10 men for 30 minutes.

  59. Where's me jumper?

    Dagenham 0-1 Tranmere

"It's alright to say things can only get better, You haven't lost your brand new sweater."

Great lyrics of course to a great track. But if you're the Tranmere fan who left your jumper in the away end at Dagenham & Redbridge this afternoon, the club have tweeted that it'll be at Prenton Park on Monday! They brought it home with them.

Three points and a jumper in the bag. Tremendous day's work.

  60. Post update

A win this afternoon would leave Arsenal level on points with Southampton, chasing down a place in the top four. Are they going to get back into the Champions League next season?

Paul Walker: There is so much cheating in football - fouling, tugging shirts. I don't understand why diving is a big deal.

Daniel Rajan: Diving is the most overblown 'epidemic' - agreed it's not good but talk of it 'killing the beautiful game' etc is hyperbolic.

  63. Post update

    Arsenal 1-0 Newcastle

    Former Newcastle defender John Anderson

BBC Radio Newcastle at the Emirates Stadium

    Alan Pardew

"Newcastle have had a bit of good fortune - the second goal should have stood (see 17:46), and at 2-0 down the game is totally different. But as we have seen in the past, if a team has had the majority of the play and should be more than a goal ahead, that can come back to haunt you. Newcastle are still in this, but they are going to have to be much better in the second half."

  64. Post update

Let's combine everyone's ideas there and make all referees speak to Garth Crooks after the games on a Saturday afternoon. That would sort it out.

  65. Join the debate at #bbcfootball

Andy in Bishops Stortford: Going back to the diving incidents. Would it not make sense to interview the refs after the game for them to explain their decisions? It would be interesting to see what they had to say.

Jim from Polegate: It's all cheating and should be punished by yellow card every time.

Kevin in Hornchurch: We need a sin bin for pathetic divers, so they get a 15-minute period sitting on stool in front of opposing teams' fans. That would stop it, but be lots of fun in the meantime. Embarrass the jokers. It's just really doing football no favours at all.

  66. The divign debate

    Robbie Savage

    606 phone-in on BBC Radio 5 live

"Gary Cahill did get away with it. He was booked earlier for a bad tackle. He then should have picked up a second yellow for simulation. Adam Johnson too at Sunderland, that was more simulation. It just has to stop."

  67. The diving debate

Former Stoke and Tottenham striker Garth Crooks

    Final Score

"Jose Mourinho said other clubs seem to be diving. That's a justification for your team doing it, is it? Today we're talking about your team, Jose. If he's using what other teams do as a defence for his team then I'm not having it.

"Jose is wrong about Willian not simulating because Chris Foy booked him. And Jose's wrong about Gary Cahill, because he dived."

  68. The diving debate

    Robbie Savage

    606 phone-in on BBC Radio 5 live

"Is diving part and parcel of the game? When is it going to stop, because we're seeing more and more of it. I'd like referees to come out after the game and explain what they do, but it's simply not going to happen. And look at Adam Johnson for Sunderland. He went over, but he won a penalty for his team."

  69. Post update

    Gary Cahill

Away from Arsenal, the main talking point this afternoon has been diving. Gary Cahill appeared fortunate not to be sent off for a second booking when he went down easily for Chelsea. Here's what our pundits thought...

  70. HALF-TIME

BBC Radio Newcastle at the Emirates Stadium

Papiss Demba Cisse on his knees

  72. Post update

    Arsenal 1-0 Newcastle

End-to-end stuff now as Newcastle keep the ball nicely, but twice they don't quite find Papiss Cisse with the killer pass.

  73. Post update

    Arsenal 1-0 Newcastle

    Former Newcastle defender John Anderson

BBC Radio Newcastle at the Emirates Stadium

"Arsenal always give you an opportunity, but it was only half a chance to be fair to Papiss Cisse. He did everything he had to do. The goalkeeper makes a great first save (18:03) but he knew nothing about the second one."

Oh and Newcastle almost level now! Another free-kick is whipped in by Jack Colback, Yoan Gouffran gets a strong header in, Wojciech Szczesny parries it out and then blocks the follow up too. Arsenal have been totally in control but suddenly look shaky at the back.

Former Stoke and Tottenham striker Garth Crooks

    Final Score

"I'm getting sick and tired of hearing managers coming to post-match interviews saying they haven't seen an incident. There are cameras and monitors everywhere. I don't think a manager should give us any nonsense about not having seen it - they should come and speak to the nation having seen everything."

  81. PENALTY APPEAL

    Arsenal 1-0 Newcastle

Should Newcastle have a penalty?! A big shout as the ball strikes Danny Welbeck on the hand as he tries to clear the ball at the far post.

  82. Manager reaction

    Burnley 1-0 Southampton

Burnley boss Sean Dyche: "We've had to dig in again. I thought in the first half we played very well and maybe surprised them a little bit.

"In the second half, they managed to grow into the game and we had to keep our resilience, shape and mentality to get the win.

"The penalty save was a massive moment. It is a penalty but we believe in Tom Heaton. He's made big saves for us before and has made that one today.

"It changed the feel of the game and our lads got back on the front foot. We responded well after that and delivered a good performance as the game went on."

  84. CLOSE!

Lovely stuff! Great play from Arsenal again as Alexis Sanchez scoops a pass over the top, Danny Welbeck reads it and launches into an acrobatic valley which flies just beyond the far corner. Great effort.

    Crystal Palace 1-1 Stoke

Stoke manager Mark Hughes: "This is always a difficult place to come for away teams, we knew that we had to set our stall out and be resolute. After the goals the two teams effectively cancelled each other out, we were trying to get the ball down to pass and move, but it was difficult on the pitch. It was a contrast of styles to an extent but as the game wore on, both teams wanted to make sure they protected the point.

"There was not a lot to get excited about, but sometimes as an away team the onus isn't on you to carry the fight, sometimes the entertainment has to come from both teams."

Nene Odonkor: Good question by Tim (17:42). Why is deliberately fouling OK but diving isn't? Speaks a lot about how biased the pundits are.

Glenn: Re Tim, because a foul is obvious to the ref and is then punished. Diving/simulation is gaining an advantage by deception.

Stacy Phillips: This is one of those days where the diving debate rears its ugly head - but once again nothing will come of it in the long run.

    Burnley 1-0 Southampton

    Burnley 1-0 Southampton

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman: "Again the same story as last Monday against Manchester United. We had more chances, missed a penalty and one of our mistakes ended in 1-0. In my opinion, football is not that difficult but you can make it difficult.

"The difference between when we were winning games and are now losing them is a small detail like not punishing the opponent in a key moment like today. Also, doing more defensive mistakes.

"After a difficult start to the game, little by little we controlled the game. The story is to kill the game and we didn't. We paid for that.

"Everyone can make mistakes but too many goals in the last few games are from our own mistakes. We had enough chances to score but we didn't."

    Manuel Pellegrini

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini: "I'm very happy because I think today was a very difficult game. It was a difficult week. We qualified on Wednesday but after that to play less than 72 hours later, it's not enough to recover 100%.

"That's why it was so important to win 1-0 and to defend the way we did. We don't have strikers. I'm very happy with the whole week and especially with this game.

"The more injuries the more difficult it is to make a starting XI. With Edin Dzeko, it's very unlucky. We must see. Maybe we are going to be without the three strikers for at least one month.

"The spirit of the team is very important to resolve this kind of problem. We will see the way we have to play in these coming weeks."

  95. PENALTY APPEAL

    Arsenal 1-0 Newcastle

Alexis Sanchez has scored or assisted 10 of Arsenal's last 14 Premier League goals. What a key player he is turning out to be.

"I couldn't see anything wrong for the disallowed goal though. Newcastle have got away with one there - that is a get out of jail free card."

  98. DISALLOWED GOAL for Arsenal

    Chelsea 2-0 Hull City

Here's more from Hull manager Steve Bruce, talking to BBC Sport: "We could have defended the first goal better - but the big issue in the game is the Gary Cahill situation.

"The referee shows his intent because he's booked two players for diving and for me Cahill is lucky to be on the pitch for his first challenge. If he hasn't dived there, then I don't know what one is. We all know what he's trying to do, he's trying to get a penalty. The referee is 10 yards away and there's no excuse. We need him to do his job otherwise it will keep rearing its ugly head.

"Unfortunately, from the first minute, Chris Foy had one of them awful afternoons. Today sums up our season. We could have been five or six points better off. I'm still convinced we've got a squad good enough."

Wonderful header from Per Mertesacker! He cannons one against the underside of the crossbar from a corner, great effort to help the ball on its way and he's unlucky. Young Newcastle keeper Jak Alnwick may have got a slight touch to that one. If he did, it was a great save!

Leicester manager Nigel Pearson: "I think we were a bit more than in it. It's another difficult day for us. We played well, I don't think there's too much you can say against that. Not a lot of chances at either end. They showed why they are champions, scored a goal out of nothing and didn't really create anything else.

"From their perspective I'm sure they are very pleased with the result in the sense they did not have to play at their absolute max but from our end I think we played pretty well and were unlucky to come away with nothing again.

"We are on the receiving end of another defeat and I don't think we deserved to be but that's how it is. There's no point me being anything other than rational about it. I think the players played well. Unfortunately we have been unable to get anything. Whether we deserved it is irrelevant. We have to look to next game. When you're adrift that makes it even more difficult psychologically but I don't think our players looked like they lacked belief and that will be important moving forward."

The yellow cards, again from my position, it's difficult to judge… but I give the referee the doubt… we spoke last season about simulation because we had a situation last season and I was the first one to say to Oscar, against Southampton, that he has to stay on his feet but the reality is that many players from other teams do that too much.

As always Steve's team was very well organised, made it difficult but we scored early and I think the team felt quite comfortable and we never felt any danger.

"Eden Hazard is a great kid and he had a chance to rest midweek, so today we could see his freshness and it's always good to have on the pitch a player like him. Steve Bruce & Jose Mourinho

Hull manager Steve Bruce on Sky Sports: "It's difficult enough when you come here - we've got no problem getting beaten here, but when there's big decisions (go against you)...

"Firstly, you want to say what you genuinely feel, but I know how difficult the referee's job is. But after two yellows for diving… Gary Cahill's first challenge for me (in the first half) borders on being a red card, and then if he's not diving - that was the most blatant one of all and that's the biggest decision. I've no problem with Tom (Huddlestone) being sent off, I accept that.

"Tom knows he's better than that but it's frustration, he feels that the referee hasn't done his job properly. When you come to these big clubs and these big stadiums, you want the referee to do his job properly. We all know what Cahill is trying to do, he's trying to get a penalty."

He then goes on to say that Tom Huddleston's red card 'was an awful challenge.'

West Brom goalscorer Craig Gardner: "It was a great team performance and to be fair to Villa they played well. The gaffer was brilliant at half-time and told us what to do. I'm delighted for him because he's taken a bit of flak.

"But it was a great all-round team performance. We had a game plan and stuck to it. This game could not have come at a better time for us."

Manchester City goalscorer Frank Lampard: "Those are the kind of games we need to get results, we needed to grind them out. We were not at our best but got three points.

"I've watched Leicester and seen even though they are down near the bottom, they are not short of passion. They showed that today. We were nowhere near the force we can be sometimes, but you have to show two sides to your game and I think we did that today.

On his 175th Premier League goal, which takes him fourth on the all-time list alongside Thierry Henry: "I'm very happy with it, I thought it was going to be out of my reach. I have respect for Henry, he is one of the greatest in Premier League history and to be up there with him his incredible."

Big goal for Burnley! And a defensive horror show from Southampton just to add insult to injury.

What a day for 18-year-old Demarai Gray. The England Under-19 international has helped himself to a first half hat-trick against Reading in the Championship for his home-town club Birmingham City, who lead 5-1.

Elsewhere, Norwich City have scored three goals in five second half minutes and now lead 10-man Huddersfield 3-0, Bradley Johnson scoring two and Nathan Redmond also on the mark.

    Chelsea 1-0 Hull City

Former Stoke and Tottenham striker Garth Crooks

    Final Score

"Twice Chelsea players have dived in the first 60 minutes - first Willian and now Gary Cahill. It's disgraceful. Managers can't say what I'm about to say - it questions the integrity of the refereeing. Is he intimidated by Stramford Bridge? The ref is not being fair.

"Cahill is on a yellow card and dived - he should have got another booking for that. It's not fair. The only conclusion you can come to is because it's Chelsea.

"And it's Chris Foy, an experienced referee! And now the injustice has got the Leicester players' blood boiling. They're thinking they might as well take the law into their own hands."

  225. Post update

    Final Score

"I have to chose my words carefully but Gary Cahill is a big, tough, centre-half and has just dived. Sometimes those are decisions (16:11) that go against you when you are down there.

"It is not acceptable in the game but sometimes if you have a midfielder who has tricky feet and goes over a little easily you can understand it but from a 6ft 4 centre-half, it is not on."

  227. YELLOW CARD

    Chelsea 1-0 Hull City

There is a red card waiting to happen at Stamford Bridge. Some heavy tackles coming in now to add to Hull's sense of frustration. Alex Bruce catches Willian on the follow-through of a heavy tackle and he is booked.

Ian Simpson: Southampton never look the same without Morgan Schneiderlin. Dominates midfield and dictates our rhythm -everything is much slower without him.

Jack Wiseman: As a West Ham fan it's painful to say, but Frank Lampard is just incredible (see 15:40). Arguably the most effective midfielder in Premier League history.

Obed Brefo: Frankly speaking, Lampard is a legend.

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink's Burton Albion lead rock bottom Hartlepool 1-0, while leaders Wycombe have come from behind to lead 2-1 at home to Southend. Morecambe and Newport boast comfortable 2-0 interval leads over Luton and Stevenage respectively. Wimbledon lead at York, while it is 2-2 between Portsmouth and Accrington.

  243. KICK-OFF

Here we go - second half time in the Premier League.

  244. League One update

Great day so far for Rochdale and Yeovil away from home in League One. Both lead 3-0 at Colchester and Oldham respectively, while former Coventry player Carl Baker had given MK Dons the lead in the fourth-versus-third battle at Preston.

Swindon lead 1-0 at Notts County and are currently top of the table, with Bristol City, who started the day at the summit, are being held 0-0 at home to Crawley.

    Arsenal v Newcastle (17:30 GMT)

    Steve Wilson

BBC Match of the Day commentator

"Newcastle didn't climb out of the relegation zone until mid-October, but now find themselves level on points with this weekend's opponents in an extremely healthy seventh place, and with a League Cup quarter-final to look forward to as well.

"Of course, some might say that being level on points with Arsenal isn't what it used to be.

"Arsene Wenger is the only current Premier League manager to have stayed in his job longer than Pardew - by some 14 years - and is becoming the focus of open revolt with his side languishing well off the pace in the Premier League.

"It will be extremely interesting to see how Arsenal's home crowd reacts to any repeat of the nasty abuse the manager suffered at Stoke station or the unfurling of the banner seen at The Hawthorns."

  249. Post update

One game still to come of course...

  250. Lampard continues to impress

    Leicester City 0-1 Manchester City

Andy: Frank Lampard just oozes quality. He is up there with Paul Scholes as England's best midfielder of the past 30 years. Lightyears ahead of Steven Gerrard.

Tom in North Wales: I don't support Man City, but I do love football; and Frank Lampard, you sir, are amazing. Love it.

James in Cheltenham: Frank Lampard doing his best to thwart the Chelsea title charge!!

  251. Championship update

Who is going to top the Championship table tonight? Middlesbrough were in pole position following their impressive 2-0 win over previous leaders Derby County earlier. But Bournemouth are the current leaders after racing into a 3-1 lead over Cardiff. Ipswich, who will go one point clear with a win, are being held 0-0 at Bolton.

Take a bow Demarai Gray. The 18-year-old has fired a first half hat-trick for Birmingham, who lead Reading 4-1. Bottom club Blackpool took the lead at Charlton, who have since equalised through a penalty by Yoni Buyens.

Chelsea Warrior: 175 goals scored? Equal with Thierry Henry? A midfielder? Why did we let him go?

Daniel Ljunggren: A very disjointed performance by Southampton, who look nothing like the free-flowing team we saw earlier in the season.

Jon Evans: Probably the worst quality rival match ever - West Brom v Aston Villa. Ten men won't make a difference to Villa, we play like we have 10 anyway.

    Chelsea 1-0 Hull City

    Former Welsh International John Hartson

    Final Score

"Manchester City are on Chelsea's tail. They will want as much talent as they can knowing they will lose players to the African Cup of Nations and will be wanting to hold on to Frank Lampard until the end of the season. Jose Mourinho might be thinking he could have held on to him in hindsight.

"There is something probably in Lampard, as much as he loves Chelsea, thinking that he wants to score as many goals as he can to make Chelsea regret their decision to let him go."

  254. Wide open space

    Leicester City 0-1 Manchester City

    MOTD2

    Frank Lampard

Frank Lampard finding space in the box? Nothing new there. Read this superb piece of insight from Jermaine Jenas.

"Frank is not quick, but he is so clever. What he will do is jog next to you, watching you and waiting for you to look for where the ball is and take your eye off him.

"You only turn your head for a second to see what is happening in the game, but that is all it takes. You look back, and he has gone.

"To stop him, I used to watch him more than I watched the ball because I always felt he was the danger - if the ball drops to him on the edge of the box I had to be there to stop him."

  255. HALF-TIME

    West Brom 0-0 Aston Villa

    John Motson

BBC Match of the Day commentator at The Hawthorns

"The major incident was the sending off of Kieran Richardson and that's allowed West Brom to see more of the ball and chances. I'm not convinced about the red card, maybe in years gone by that would only be a yellow card, although he did stretch and lead with studs. Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert will certainly be happy to get his side in at the break."

  256. HALF-TIME

    Sunderland 1-1 West Ham

    Simon Brotherton

    Match of the Day commentator

"Great chance for Sunderland to restore the lead right on the stroke of half-time but it just fell behind Jozy Altidore. As he ponders a chance that has gone by, we are level at the break."

  257. CLOSE!

    Sunderland 1-1 West Ham

Jozy, Jozy, Jozy. Shocking miss by Jozy Altidore on the stroke of half-time as the Sunderland striker is picked out by Seb Larsson, who plays the ball across the face of goal for Altidore, who is all alone barely eight yards out from goal, but he misses his shot completely. Got to be putting those away.

  258. HALF-TIME

    Burnley 0-0 Southampton

    Steve Bower

BBC Match of the Day commentator at Turf Moor

"A scrappy and goalless first half. Burnley striker Danny Ings has looked the most likely to break the deadlock but neither goalkeeper has been stretched."

  259. 'Lampard should stay'

    Leicester City 0-1 Manchester City

Former Stoke and Tottenham striker Garth Crooks

    Final Score

"In view of the fact that Yaya Toure is going to the Africa Cup of Nations, Frank Lampard should be kept. The irony is that with City three points behind Chelsea, what if Lampard provides the goals that rob his old club the championship?

"I understand Jose Mourinho letting him go, but I'd never have expected Frank to rerouted him back to one of the Blues' biggest rivals!"

  260. Post update

    Leicester City 0-1 Manchester City

    Former England winger Chris Waddle

BBC Radio 5 live at King Power Stadium

"Leicester just ran out of steam towards the end of that first half but they should not panic because they've played reasonably well. In the opening 30 minutes they were the better side and looked the more likely to score. But Manchester City have got that quality - players who can turn a match. Samir Nasri hadn't been in the game, and then he produces quality in the box to set up Frank Lampard for the goal. A lot of the Leicester players were ball watching though."

  261. HALF-TIME

    Crystal Palace 1-1 Stoke

MOTD's John Roder at Selhurst Park

"Yannick Bolasie has provided Stoke with plenty of problems, and it was he who provided the cross for Palace's opener from James McArthur, but Peter Crouch levelled just one minute and 31 seconds later."

  262. HALF-TIME

    Leicester City 0-1 Manchester City

    Sunderland 1-1 West Ham

West Ham are almost caught out by a quickly taken free-kick as Jordi Gomez finds himself unmarked on the left and he plays a dangerous ball behind the defence and towards the far post but it just beyond John O'Shea, who would have had the simple task of stabbing in to an empty net if he had got to the ball.

"Man City unstitched Leicester, really did open them up. But Paul Konchesky, as the left-back, should be able to see Frank Lampard in front of him, but he was stuck watching the play. He should have come across, but Lampard was left in so much space to get his shot away."

  268. Post update

"Frank Lampard has been doing that for years, he always gets in the box. And there are not many of those midfielders left now, who always see an opportunity. But who was marking him? Samir Nasri just squared it for a simple tap-in. Nobody tracked Lampard. Manchester City have not deserved it, it should be a draw, but quality players always produce when you need them."

Manuel wants Frank Lampard, in the words of East 17, to stay another day at Manchester City. And this is why... the midfielder timing his run into the box to perfection as he sidefoots home from eight yards after good work on the left by Samir Nasri. Head down, and go for it! Great run from Danny Ings as he motors from his own box to the edge of Southampton's, but he never once looks up. He had George Boyd to his right, is blinkered though and doesn't see him. He shoots and it's easily blocked.

On the bench, young Jake Hesketh is in tears. His big day hasn't gone to plan, injured inside half an hour. He'll go again!

  276. PENALTY APPEAL

    Crystal Palace 1-1 Stoke

Palace are convinced they should have a penalty after Wilfried Zaha's cross appears to strike Erik Pieters on the arm, but much to the winger's chagrin referee Kevin Friend ignores his pleas for a spot-kick.

  277. Post update

Pablo Zabaleta was given the day off by Manuel Pellegrini, but has since been parachuted onto the substitutes' bench by Manuel Pellegrini after Edin Dzeko pulled up injured in the warm-up. The hunt for Mrs Z's Christmas present must wait a little longer it seems.

  278. Football League latest

Astonishing opening half at St Andrew's where it's raining goals - four in the opening 25 minutes between Birmingham and Reading. The Blues raced into a 2-0 lead before Glenn Murray reduced the deficit but Demarai Gray has added his second of the match to put Birmingham 3-1 up. It goes from bad to worse for struggling Wigan, who trail Watford after Troy Deeney struck.

It's a good day for travelling teams in League One so far. Rochdale and Yeovil lead 2-0 at Colchester and Oldham respectively, while Sheffield United, Peterborough and Swindon are also winning away from home.

Leicester are starting to feel the pace a bit, having made such a high-energy start to the game, and City are having more of the ball. "Manchester City are not playing well at all - there is no energy. They've made a lot of changes from midweek and you would have thought they would have really gone after this Leicester side. But they look tired, and Leicester have all the threat going forward. Manuel Pellegrini will have strong words at half-time. City are strolling through this game at the moment."

  291. Post update

    Leicester City 0-0 Manchester City

Manchester City can't quite get the ball to stick up top - Jose Pozo looks too lightweight at the moment. City should just lump Mangala up front. It'd be like in the nineties when they responded to an injury crisis by giving Michel Vonk six games as a lone striker.

  292. GOAL

Sunderland 1-1 West Ham - Stewart Downing (28 mins)

Sam Allardyce's mood swiftly improves as West Ham hit back courtesy of Stewart Downing's deflected strike. "You could see Esteban Cambiasso was going to have a shot (see 15:25), but Joe Hart was too far over in his goal. He was scrambling in the end. It's a finely balanced game, but Manchester City are playing too slow. Leicester have shown all the energy so far. And Yaya Toure has just given two silly fouls away in the last two minutes - he has to be careful now."

As I say that Sone Aluko shoots over the top from 20 yards. Better from the Tigers.

  305. Post update

    Leicester City 0-0 Manchester City

Manchester City appear to be playing with three players in or around 'the hole' today and it's all looking very crowded as Yaya Toure, David Silva and Samir Nasri battle for space and time on the ball. Not forgetting Jose Pozo, whose natural inclination appears to be to drop into the number 10 role. The only space more crowded than that today is the Trafford Centre car park.

Manchester City have no presence up front. Jose Pozo is mobile but he is very small. City are yet to get out of first gear. They have got to up the tempo, because Leicester are well up for this game."

  312. GOAL

Crystal Palace 1-1 Stoke - Peter Crouch (13 mins)

Palace's lead didn't last long, did it? Just a matter of seconds really as Bojan drives down the right and pulls the ball back for Jon Walters who fails with a shot but Peter Crouch doesn't as he bundles home from six yards out on his 600th league appearance.

The new Stoke go behind to a goal the old Stoke would have been proud of. Palace's Yannick Bolasie tries a few tricks out on the left and stands up a ball into the box, where James McArthur meets it with the back of his head and it loops over the keeper. Did he mean that?

Jamie Vardy, who conquered Manchester United earlier this season, is looking really lively as he looks for his first goal since that victory over Louis van Gaal's boys. 317. SUBSTITUTION

Sunderland have started well, dominating possession, but West Ham are flying high in the table for a reason and they soak up the initial pressure and twice almost hit the hosts with swift attacks. 319. GOAL

Chelsea 1-0 Hull City - Eden Hazard (7 mins)

I'm not sure that Hull had even touched the ball before falling behind. Utter domination from Chelsea and they take the lead with a goal that is all too simple in its construction. The engine room of John Mikel Obi and Nemanja Matic get the ball and find the creators up front, Oscar is allowed to pick out a cross and Eden Hazard is unmarked to head home. Game over already?

Some might have written his team off after they failed to win in their opening 10 games, but Burnley manager Sean Dyche is more than content with how his players have adapted to life in the Premier League.

"We're not struggling; we're actually overachieving because people were saying 'will they ever win a game?'," he said. "It's funny how perceptions work. What did people expect? Challenging for the top four?

"But we've tried to be on the front foot away from home because over a season you might win three or four. If you back off every game you've got less chance of doing that. A lot of people thought they were a weakened side in midweek and as a result they might have found it hard. But they didn't - they have a strong squad and any player that comes in seems to do a job for them. And of course the key is confidence. City have a lot of it at the minute.

"As regards Leicester, well I know Nigel Pearson. I played with him at Sheffield Wednesday and he's a great lad. I like the way his teams play and his philosophy on the game is good. In the Championship, Leicester were a very attacking side who scored a lot of goals. At this level, a few players are finding it harder and you do wonder whether they should adapt how they play and just get players behind the ball. They do have players with pace but they must know this season is all about survival in the Premier League. At the minute, they are too open and you can get at them."

    Middlesbrough 1-0 Derby

Another let-off for Derby - this time Daniel Ayala failing to get a feather on Grant Leadbitter's deep free-kick, which would surely have taken the ball past Lee Grant. The keeper punches clear and Adam Clayton flashes the follow-up wide.

West Bromwich Albion v Aston Villa (15:00 GMT)

    BBC Radio 5 live

Aston Villa chief executive Tom Fox said the club is targeting a regular challenge for European football within three years. But John Hartson, the former Wales, Arsenal, West Ham and Celtic striker, doesn't think that's viable.

"I think they need some players to do that," he said. "I think they're okay - they have more than the bottom three or four but not enough to push the top six or seven."

Boro are piling forward now and Patrick Bamford drives a shot into the midriff of Lee Grant. A second goal now and it looks like curtains for the Rams this afternoon.

    Stewart Downing boxer shorts

West Ham have been tweeting some images from inside the away dressing room at Sunderland today and it now seems players even have their boxer shorts provided. What is more, they get them numbered.

Stewart Downing in this instance wears a black number. I wonder if the club buy them the standard pair we all seem to get for Christmas?

  411. Post update

West Brom v Aston Villa (15:00 GMT)

    John Motson

BBC Match of the Day commentator

"Surely few people would disagree that the season has not gone to plan for either of these clubs so far?

"The West Midlands rivals and founder members of the Football League are not exactly tapping into their glorious histories at present.

"For West Brom, a run of one point from five matches, one win in nine and the joint worst home record in the Premier League has left them one point above the relegation zone.

"Aston Villa's position may look rather more positive in the wake of back-to-back wins but their recent revival after six straight defeats has coincided with a run of fixtures against some of the division's less fashionable sides."

  412. Post update

Sunderland v West Ham (15:00 GMT)

    Simon Brotherton

    Match of the Day commentator

"Andy Carroll might have been getting carried away the other day when he said of West Ham: "I think there's no limit, we can go all the way to the top," but it will be interesting to see if they can remain genuine top-four contenders as the season unfolds.

"Confidence is sky high at the moment and will have been reinforced by the nature of last week's 3-1 victory over Swansea, in which they came from behind with Carroll scoring his first two goals of the season.

"Sunderland's record in winning only two games so far doesn't look quite so bad when you realise they have also only been beaten four times.

"But nine draws from 15 games leaves them just a couple of points above the relegation zone, with Gus Poyet acknowledging "it's about winning now".

  413. Post update

    Burnley v Southampton (15:00 GMT)

    Steve Bower

BBC Match of the Day commentator

"A victory for either club in this match would be the perfect pre-Christmas shot in the arm.

"After just one point from the last 12, it would provide the chance for Southampton to begin another run of consistency. In Burnley's case, it would be an immediate response to defeat at Queens Park Rangers as they slowly begin to find their feet in the top flight.

"If Burnley are to defy the odds and survive, then their form at Turf Moor will be pivotal. After one win in eight attempts, if they could beat Ronald Koeman's team it would be a further injection of self-belief and confidence ahead of games against Spurs, Liverpool and Manchester City.

"They may feel it's a better time to be facing Southampton, but anyone who saw the Saints lose on Monday to Manchester United will know there was little wrong with the performance, and they were also unlucky at Arsenal."

  414. Post update

    Chelsea v Hull (15:00 GMT)

    Jonathan Pearce

BBC Match of the Day commentator

"What a hullabaloo over Chelsea's defeat at Newcastle. Five points dropped in three games sparked tales of collapse and woe, of Manchester City now being title favourites, of Jose Mourinho's league leaders coming down just as the Christmas lights were going up.

"The way the Blues bounced back against Sporting Lisbon in the week suggests they have got their North East setbacks out of their system, and Hull could face the music.

"I can't imagine anyone was ringing alarm bells at Cobham HQ over the last week, but I can understand why distress flares are being launched by some Hull fans.

"Since they beat Sheffield United in the FA Cup semi-final, the Tigers have won just two league games in 20. Fourteen points from a possible 60 is clear relegation form."

  415. Post update

Crystal Palace v Stoke (15:00 GMT)

    John Roder

    Match of the Day commentator

"Stoke's excellent victory over Arsenal last weekend halted a run of three league defeats and they arrive at Selhurst Park looking for their third away win of the campaign.

"Manager Mark Hughes said the first-half performance against the Gunners, when Stoke took a 3-0 lead, was the best since he took charge, and singled out Bojan for particular praise.

"This is only the third Premier League match between these two clubs, and Palace have had a different manager in each of them. I was commentating at the last meeting at Selhurst Park, back in January, when the Stoke fans paid a warm and sincere tribute to Tony Pulis as the then-Palace boss faced his old club for the first time.

"A worrying statistic is that Palace's magnificent performance against Liverpool three weeks ago is their only triumph in nine Premier League matches."

  416. Post update

Leicester v Man City (15:00 GMT)

    Guy Mowbray

BBC Match of the Day commentator

"Not even confirmation that Sergio Aguero will be out of action until mid-January could dampen the Manchester City mood, with the opening of their highly-acclaimed £200m training complex followed by a famous Champions League win in Rome on Wednesday.

"It was a sixth successive victory made even more impressive by being achieved without the superstar spine of the team - no Aguero, no Yaya Toure, no Vincent Kompany.

"Whilst the sky blue City have taken 25 points from the last possible 30, Leicester have gathered only two.

"If they don't at least double that in the next two games then they'll be bottom at Christmas - a position from which only West Brom and Sunderland have escaped the drop in 22 years of the Premier League."

Steve Harper noted at 12:36 that today's goalkeepers will have to wear caps to shield them from the bright winter sunshine.

The low stands at Portsmouth's Fratton Park have proved a problem for keepers for years, including one-time Pompey stopper David James. But his cap's nothing in comparison to former Wolves and England glovesman Bert Williams!

"The new academy development at Manchester City is incredibly impressive, but what impressed me most about visiting was the people. There is special warmth at City now. "When you are a club like Man City and they have got the financial clout they have you have still got to do things right. They are doing that now, putting things back into the city. "Incredible save from Grant. The keeper parried the first shot to 20 yards out but he was up quickly and got a strong glove to the rebound. That's one of the best saves I've seen all season!"

  430. GREAT SAVE!

    Middlesbrough 1-0 Derby

Lee Grant keeps Derby in the game with a fine double-save. After his team-mate Omar Mascarell gives the ball away, he beats Patrick Bamford's powerful shot away and recovers to deny Jelle Vossen with an even better save at the follow-up.

  431. Post update

    Middlesbrough 1-0 Derby

Better from Derby as good work from Johnny Russell wins a corner. The delivery is not as good, though, as it is played to the edge of the area and Boro end up pressing the Rams back into their own half.

Leicester City v Manchester City (15:00 GMT)

    Ian Dennis

BBC Radio 5 live senior football reporter

"Nigel Pearson makes no mention of his recent fine in his programme notes. It's very easy to judge when we all can't appreciate the intense pressure a manager is under. I was speaking to a manager who was recently subjected to horrific abuse, horrific, by someone who had got hold of his mobile phone number. We still don't know what the fan said to Nigel Pearson, though of course that almost doesn't matter. Today, however, he will want the focus to be on his team, not him."

  433. Post update

    Middlesbrough 1-0 Derby

  434. Post update

  435. Ally McCoist's future at Rangers

Former Manchester United defender Phil Neville

"Hull have nothing to lose going to Chelsea. This season we've been to Anfield, Goodison and the Emirates and got very valuable points. Why not at Stamford Bridge. Hull need to dig in today because after this match we've got a decent run of fixtures. We will have to be at out best with 11 players on top form. Steve Bruce hand the staff has done a lot of homework this past week and hopefully it will pay off.

"But take a look at Petr Cech. He has an opportunity today - if he does well today I see no reason why he shouldn't keep his place. And Cech is a Chelsea club legend."

  451. Manager view

    Middlesbrough v Derby (12:15 GMT)

Derby boss Steve McClaren: "It's a massive test. Aitor Karanka has done a great job with his Boro team. They play great football and score good goals. It's a big game, a big test. I just want us to go out there and play as we can. If we do, it could be a good day."

  452. Manager view

    Middlesbrough v Derby (12:15 GMT)

Middlesbrough manager Aitor Karanka, who is serving a one-game touchline ban today: "We are in December. We have to be very strong now, because over Christmas if we do well it may well decide our season. It's the first time I've watched the game from the stands. Hopefully it will be my last, because I have learnt from my mistake. I don't want to make excuses. We have prepared perfectly, the players know my style, and I can of course talk to my players at half-time."

    Middlesbrough v Derby (12:15 GMT)

Derby might be sitting top of the pile in December, but, as every Christmas tree fairy will attest, that isn't always the case in January. To ensure Derby's promotion dream doesn't end up in a box in the loft at the start of 2014, manager Steve McClaren has been scouting potential new signings.

He's been in the Netherlands this week, and his assistant Paul Simpson said: "We are looking to strengthen. We are all going to games and making trips to see players on the radar."

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho's second spell in charge of the club began with a 2-0 win over today's opponents Hull.

The Portuguese now believes he has a better side. he said: "[It is] a completely different team. The evolution in the quality of our game, evolution in many individuals that after so many weeks of work they improve a lot.

"We are a better team. I hope the result can be the same."

  465. Ballboys to blame

    Chelsea v Hull (15:00 GMT)

Top-flight leaders Chelsea suffered their first league defeat of the season when a 23-game unbeaten run came to an end at Newcastle last Saturday.

But the Blues players, the tactics of Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho or the Magpies resilience had nothing to do with the loss. Ohhh no, of course not.

According to the Portuguese, the blame lay squarely at the feet of the Tyneside club's ballboys. Today, they host Hull and will be out to show the defeat was purely and temporary blip.

Chelsea striker Fernando Torres is on loan at AC Milan and has been linked with a move back to former club Liverpool. Asked about the Spaniard returning to Chelsea, let's just say Blues boss Jose Mourinho doesn't seem to keen.

"That's an impossible picture," said Mourinho . "He's on loan for two seasons at AC Milan. We have no space. We have no space for players in our list either in the Champions League or in the Premier League."

"I know they can be got at at the back but if they don't concede early, keep the crowd with them and play with the pace they've got up front they should have enough."

  469. 'Nothing to fear'

Arsenal v Newcastle United (17:30 GMT)

    BBC Radio 5 live

Burnley manager Sean Dyche believes Newcastle have nothing to fear ahead of their trip to Emirates Stadium.

"They look a different animal to earlier in the season," he said. "The new players have adjusted and they're on a good run. Now they have familiarised themselves with the Premier League, their talents are showing."

QPR midfielder Joey Barton, a former Newcastle player, added: "I think Hull at home was key. They were 2-0 down and got a draw and the fans were baying for Alan Pardew's blood. Mike Ashley actually deserves a lot of credit for sticking by him - and I didn't think I'd ever be saying that about him."

  470. Love is in the air - part two

    Arsenal v Newcastle (17:30 GMT)

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew hasn't always been Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger's favourite person but feelings between the pair appear to have thawed.

"Alan Pardew has gone through a very difficult patch at Newcastle and he has dealt with it with strength and dignity. Fortunately he has been rewarded for it," said Wenger.

"They had a great result last week, they are doing well and they are on a good run. It will be a very interesting challenge for us.

Can their relationship survive their meeting in today's late game?

  471. Love is in the air

    Arsenal v Newcastle (17:30 GMT)

It's the festive season and love - or mutual respect - appears to have broken out between Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger and Newcastle counterpart Alan Pardew. The two had a touchline spat in 2006 when Pardew was in charge at West Ham but seem to have made up.

Pardew says the abuse fans aimed at Wenger, who was booed when boarding a train following his side's 3-2 Premier League defeat at Stoke last Saturday, was "totally disrespectful".

The Magpies boss also believes Arsenal should name their stadium after Wenger in recognition of the Frenchman's achievements at the club.

  473. The curse

Manager and player of the month

    Sergio Aguero and Alan Pardew
Image caption: Sergio Aguero and Alan Pardew have both won their respective awards before

It can be football's equivalent of what happened to the baddies in Superman II when their powers were taken away in the film to leave them defenceless.

We are of course talking about the manager and player of the month awards. For some reason, winning the award has a reputation for not being a good sign for its recipients.

Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero won the player gong for November and the curse struck him even before he had won it as he got injured last Saturday and will be out for about four to six weeks.

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew won the manager award and we'll see how he gets on against Arsenal today.

  475. 'Mr Realistic'

Leicester v Man City (15:00 GMT)

Leicester are four points from safety and haven't won in 10 games since beating Manchester United 5-3 in September. Can they do the Manchester double and beat City as well?

Here's what Foxes boss Nigel Pearson thinks: "I don't see any mileage thinking, 'what's the point?' If I start thinking like that I might as well finish.

"I remain Mr Realistic, I will always try to reflect and assess where we're at based on our capabilities and what we need."

He adds: "I'm looking for us to perform as well as we can, for the players to give themselves the best chance of winning the game. We're here to play against the big sides."

  476. Barton on Pearson

Leicester City v Manchester City (15:00 GMT)

    BBC Radio 5 live

    Nigel Pearson

Joey Barton has come to the defence of Nigel Pearson after he was charged by the FA for arguing with one of his own fans, but the QPR midfielder has suggested a lack of goals could cost the Leicester manager.

"If you've got a goalscorer, that gives you a hell of a chance," Barton said. "We've got one in Charlie Austin. Burnley have, too, in Danny Ings. But I don't know if Leicester do.

"But to think that less than 15 games in they're calling for Nigel's head . . . he did incredible to get them up and he's a really good man.

"The real difficulty for me is people goading you trying to make a name for themselves and no doubt the guy at Leicester has had his moment in the spotlight after that. If he was a proper fan, he wouldn't want to cause his team this grief."

  477. 'One-man team' part two

Leicester v Man City (15:00 GMT)

BBC Sport pundit Robbie Savage: "Manchester City will definitely miss Sergio Aguero over the next few weeks, but his absence should not prove as damaging to their title bid as people might think.

"The first reason for that is the run of fixtures that City face without their injured star striker are all winnable, and the second is how well they did without him when they were champions last season - when they actually had a better winning record when he was not in the side.

"On top of that, City already showed with their brilliant Champions League win over Roma that any talk they are a one-man team is ridiculous."

  478. One-man team

Leicester v Man City (15:00 GMT)

    Sergio Aguero

Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero's injury against Everton last week had some fearing the worst for his side.

The Argentine, who is the Premier League's top scorer with 14 goals, was claimed by some to be City's one-man team and his absence for between four and six weeks was set to be a major setback for the side.

But Manuel Pellegrini's side beat Roma in midweek to scrape through to the last 16 of the Champions League and will be out to prove they are more than just Aguero-fuelled against Leicester today.

    Almeria 1-4 Real Madrid

Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo (centre) and team-mates Gareth Bale (right) and Karim Benzema

Cristiano Ronaldo might not have had his greatest game but the Real Madrid forward just cannot stop scoring goals. He grabbed a late double in a 4-1 win at Almeria on Friday night to take his tally to 25 goals in 14 La Liga games this season. Unbelievable.

Gareth Bale and Isco were also on the scoresheet for the Bernabeu outfit, who reeled off 20th victory in a row in all competitions.

Real have won every match since 13 September and are four off the world record of Brazilians Coritiba in 2011.

  483. A mature Rooney

Manchester United v Liverpool (Sunday - 13:30 GMT)

    BBC Radio 5 live

    Wayne Rooney

Sean Dyche and John Hartson have both praised the performances of Wayne Rooney since he was appointed Manchester United captain by Louis van Gaal in the summer.

"Van Gaal seems to have given Wayne his confidence back and he's trying things again and that's when he's at his best," Hartson said. "Leading is not about head-butting walls and grabbing people by the neck - it is about going out and doing it."

Burnley manager Dyche added: "Players mature on and off the pitch, don't forget. They form opinions and star to believe in them - it's a natural thing. Some are more at ease with it than others and he seems the type who has ideas on how the game is played."

  484. Reds fans at wits end

Manchester United v Liverpool (Sunday - 13:30 GMT)

    BBC Radio 5 live

    Brendan Rodgers

The notion that Brendan Rodgers has credit in the bank after leading Liverpool to second place in the Premier League last term holds little currency with Joey Barton. The QPR midfielder was scathing in his criticism of the Anfield manager, in particular his recruitment.

"Brendan has to take the responsibility as the manager because he had a lot of input into transfers but has come up short," Barton said. "The reality is he will get time after the freak season they had last season - and make no mistake it was a freak season with having no midweek commitments and one of the best players in the world at the top of his game.

"But how can you sell Luis Suarez and replace him with Mario Balotelli? Brendan knew how big the void was - 30 goals - and no disrespect to Rickie Lambert, but he should not be starting for Liverpool. And as for Balotelli, nobody else would touch him. We probably wouldn't at QPR.

"Liverpool spent £116m in the summer and you can't just be a decent side having spent that amount of money. They haven't evolved and are still reliant on Steven Gerrard. I mean, Philippe Coutinho and Adam Lallana didn't get on the pitch against Basel the other day in a game they had to win... the fans are at their wits end."

    Newspaper round-up

    Daily Mirror

The Daily Mirror has a story about Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren, claiming that he could be on his way out of the club, with his team-mates apparently having lost confidence in the ability of the £20m-signing from Southampton.

Former Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish, in his column for the Daily Mirror, says current Reds manager Brendan Rodgers should take inspiration from Alan Pardew and Sam Allardyce in the way they have improved fortunes at Newcastle and West Ham respectively.

Ahead of the game against Manchester United on Sunday, he says: "If Liverpool can pull off a win at Old Trafford, they will only be four points behind United.

"Suddenly, they would be right back in the mix and their morale would get a huge boost.

"It's perfectly possible. United rode their luck when they won at Arsenal a few weeks ago and got fortunate again when they beat Southampton last Monday."

  488. Keane the villain?

Villa boss Paul Lambert (left) with Roy Keane
Image caption: Keane (right) left Villa at the end of last month

The Daily Mail has also been digging some dirt on Roy Keane's departure from Aston Villa and it does not make pretty reading. Apparently, the former Manchester United captain and Republic of Ireland assistant manager managed to ruffle more than a few feathers among the Villa playing staff during his time as assistant to boss Paul Lambert.

Keane, the piece says, created a "poisonous atmosphere" at the club and a clash with villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor proved the final straw and led to his departure.

Image caption: Saturday's Daily Mail back page

The Daily Mail has a Manchester United-centric back page, which goes with the headline 'Louis Van Snarl' in reference to the United boss being unhappy with some former Old Trafford players having a pop at his side.

Ex-United right-back Gary Neville has claimed United are defending like a pub team, while former Red Devils midfielder Paul Scholes believes the best young talent in Manchester will now flock to Manchester City after the opening of their new £200m training complex. However, Van Gaal has pretty much declared, "You know nothing, Neville and Scholes".

  490. Premier League football on a Friday?

    Rebecca Black
Image caption: Rebecca Black: Friday, Friday, soon you'll be able to watch Premier League football on Friday

As Rebecca Black famously mused back in 2011, "it's Friday, Friday, gotta get down on Friday." In Black's song she contemplates numerous aspects relating to the fifth day of the week, like sittin' in back seats, eating cereal and partyin', partyin' (yeah).

What she didn't prophetically include in her ode to the day before the weekend was that for the next TV rights deal, running from August 2016, the Premier League is to make 168 live matches available per season, which is 14 more than the current 154, and these will be divided into five packages of 28 matches and two packages of 14 matches, with one of the packages including up to 10 live games per season on a Friday night. Probably because lyrically it doesn't scan quite as well as just saying fun four times.

Leicester v Man City (15:00 GMT)

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini (right) and Frank Lampard

Chelsea might have thought Frank Lampard was on the wane when they let him go last summer but the 36-year-old has turned up at their title rivals Manchester City and is having a major impact at the Etihad stadium club.

So much so, City boss Manuel Pellegrini wants to extend the midfielder's loan from MLS club New York City beyond the end of December.

"I think Frank is a very important player for us and I hope we will not have any problems for him to stay here," said Pellegrini.

"I hope we can have a decision as soon as possible."

  493. Be happy

Image caption: Sun back page on Saturday

Firstly, let's get stuck into the newspapers like you would your Christmas dinner and see what they are making a meal of. Along with that we'll also be analysing today's games and looking at some of the other stories around in our Saturday build-up.

Manchester United v Liverpool may not be taking place until Sunday, but this morning's papers are circling the fixture like a pack of hungry vultures. Most of the back pages are devoted to Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers' assertion that he remains the best man for the club, despite, as The Sun points out, a run of just three wins in 12, elimination from the Champions League and them currently being ninth in the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Chelsea defender John Terry is enjoying a renaissance in his career and Blues boss Jose Mourinho puts it down to the 34-year-old being - as pop star Pharrell Williams said - happy.

"The medical department and fitness coaches are working well. But the most important thing is to be happy," said Mourinho.

"I read once a famous neurologist who said, 'We docs always say do some exercise, eat properly, be careful with salt, with protein, but we forget to tell people the most important thing. Be happy'. I think John is."

  494. Champo action

    Middlesbrough v Derby (12:15 GMT)

There's no early Premier League kick-off today - I know, what is going on? It's messed up the circuitry a little bit but we do have a Championship game to negate the loss.

Championship leaders Derby visit third-placed Middlesbrough in the division's early game (12:15 GMT).

Boro boss Aitor Karanka's side won the last meeting between the pair with a 1-0 victory at the Riverside Stadium in April and will be hoping for a repeat. But it's not going to be easy as the Rams have won four of their past five games.
