  1. PENALTY APPEALpublished at 18:03 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2014

Should Newcastle have a penalty?! A big shout as the ball strikes Danny Welbeck on the hand as he tries to clear the ball at the far post.

  2. Manager reactionpublished at 18:03 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2014

Burnley boss Sean Dyche: "We've had to dig in again. I thought in the first half we played very well and maybe surprised them a little bit.

"In the second half, they managed to grow into the game and we had to keep our resilience, shape and mentality to get the win.

"The penalty save was a massive moment. It is a penalty but we believe in Tom Heaton. He's made big saves for us before and has made that one today.

"It changed the feel of the game and our lads got back on the front foot. We responded well after that and delivered a good performance as the game went on."

"Alexis Sanchez played such a lovely little ball over the top, and Danny Welbeck did really well to keep it down as he hit it first time, but it was always drifting wide of Jak Alnwick's post."

  4. CLOSE!published at 18:02 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2014

Lovely stuff! Great play from Arsenal again as Alexis Sanchez scoops a pass over the top, Danny Welbeck reads it and launches into an acrobatic valley which flies just beyond the far corner. Great effort.

Stoke manager Mark Hughes: "This is always a difficult place to come for away teams, we knew that we had to set our stall out and be resolute. After the goals the two teams effectively cancelled each other out, we were trying to get the ball down to pass and move, but it was difficult on the pitch. It was a contrast of styles to an extent but as the game wore on, both teams wanted to make sure they protected the point.

"There was not a lot to get excited about, but sometimes as an away team the onus isn't on you to carry the fight, sometimes the entertainment has to come from both teams."

Nene Odonkor: Good question by Tim (17:42). Why is deliberately fouling OK but diving isn't? Speaks a lot about how biased the pundits are.

Glenn: Re Tim, because a foul is obvious to the ref and is then punished. Diving/simulation is gaining an advantage by deception.

Stacy Phillips: This is one of those days where the diving debate rears its ugly head - but once again nothing will come of it in the long run.

The speed of Arsenal's play has been noticeable. There aren't many quicker than Hector Bellerin, who cuts in from right-back, bombs past Mike Williamson and opens up the goal - only for Fabricio Coloccini to make a last-ditch challenge.

James Butler: No case for that being disallowed for me, poor. Should be 2-0, great finish from Danny Welbeck. Invigorating start here!

David Shepherd: If Daryl Janmaat had tripped Welbeck's ankles in the same fashion, everyone would have said it was a stonewall penalty...

Matthew Penistone: No Aaron Ramsey, Jack Wilshere or Mikel Arteta and Arsenal play a quicker, more dangerous game. Food for thought Arsene...

"You cannot ignore someone of Frank Lampard's scoring pedigree, particularly as Yaya Toure's off to the Africa Cup of Nations. Manuel Pellegrini will want Lampard in his team, scoring goals."

This is as well as I've seen Arsenal play in a while. Full of energy, full of pace, much more like it. Hector Bellerin shows his speed down the right and delivers a testing cross which is well defended at the near post. Corner ball.

"Burnley were always in the game against Southampton, for whom this is now their fourth straight defeat. A really good performance from Burnley, and Tom Heaton's penalty save was the turning point.

"A great three points for Burnley, and Sean Dyche thinks he's got a chance of staying up. Of late they have been playing very, very well. They have a battle on their hands and it will be a huge achievement if they stay up."

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman: "Again the same story as last Monday against Manchester United. We had more chances, missed a penalty and one of our mistakes ended in 1-0. In my opinion, football is not that difficult but you can make it difficult.

"The difference between when we were winning games and are now losing them is a small detail like not punishing the opponent in a key moment like today. Also, doing more defensive mistakes.

"After a difficult start to the game, little by little we controlled the game. The story is to kill the game and we didn't. We paid for that.

"Everyone can make mistakes but too many goals in the last few games are from our own mistakes. We had enough chances to score but we didn't."

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini: "I'm very happy because I think today was a very difficult game. It was a difficult week. We qualified on Wednesday but after that to play less than 72 hours later, it's not enough to recover 100%.

"That's why it was so important to win 1-0 and to defend the way we did. We don't have strikers. I'm very happy with the whole week and especially with this game.

"The more injuries the more difficult it is to make a starting XI. With Edin Dzeko, it's very unlucky. We must see. Maybe we are going to be without the three strikers for at least one month.

"The spirit of the team is very important to resolve this kind of problem. We will see the way we have to play in these coming weeks."

"I've just seen the disallowed goal again (17:46), and for the life of me, I just cannot see anything wrong at all. What has the referee blown up for? Daryl Janmaat just went down on his own. The referee's already done Newcastle a couple of favours."

  15. PENALTY APPEALpublished at 17:51 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2014

Alexis Sanchez has scored or assisted 10 of Arsenal's last 14 Premier League goals. What a key player he is turning out to be.

Arsenal then want a penalty as Olivier Giroud and Cheick Tiote collide on the edge of the box, nothing given and if anything Giroud fouled the Newcastle man.

  16. Postpublished at 17:48 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2014

Fine start from the Gunners, whose front three of Alexis Sanchez, Olivier Giroud and Danny Welbeck are causing all sorts of problems.

"Olivier Giroud scores with a good header (17:44), and it was a lovely ball from Alexis Sanchez. Daryl Janmaat was too static and Giroud had a run on him to get onto the cross. He's so good in those positions.

"I couldn't see anything wrong for the disallowed goal though. Newcastle have got away with one there - that is a get out of jail free card."

  18. DISALLOWED GOAL for Arsenalpublished at 17:46 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2014

Arsenal go two up! But no. Danny Welbeck does well to shovel in a chip from a tight angle but the whistle was blown. Welbeck penalised for a foul on Daryl Janmaat in the build-up.

"A fantastic header. Giroud is so recently back in the side - he'll be so good for Arsenal."

Arsenal's bright start is rewarded as Olivier Giroud scores with a cracking header. Andy Carroll would be proud of this one. Giroud frees Alexis Sanchez down the right, the Chilean has time to pick out a return cross and Giroud is head and shoulders clear of the black-and-white defence to thump a header into the top corner. Unstoppable.
