"The first half has been pretty open and watchable but no goals in it. Newcastle keeper Rob Elliot is going to go into the dressing room nursing an injury and his shake of the head suggests it could be serious."

Chelsea finally get their foot on the ball and press forward for one last opportunity before the break. Cesc Fabregas clips the ball into the area for Oscar, who has two defenders in close attention. The ball is headed up into the air and Oscar tries an acrobatic overhead kick, but it goes wide.

Another opportunity for Newcastle, whose confidence is growing so much that Paul Dummett decides to get in on the attacking action and have a wander forward. He spots Remy Cabella lurking on the edge of the area and sweeps a low pass to him, but Cabella's first touch is too heavy and Chelsea clear.

If I was Alan Pardew, I'd be pretty happy with how things have panned out so far. Newcastle are causing Chelsea one or two problems when a Blues player is in possession, often causing them to lose the ball.

In fact, it has perhaps rattled the visitors a little, and Newcastle have another chance as Chelsea fail to clear the ball just outside their own area and Jack Colback nips in to lash a first-time effort wide.

"Great play from Newcastle. Jack Colback gets away from Cesc Fabregas, Ayoze Perez puts him in, but Thibaut Courtois is out to it quickly and blocks. Newcastle haven't been that involved that much, in fact they have weathered the storm, but that was the best chance of the game."

Simon in York: You'd run through a brick wall for a manager like Alan Pardew, and with John Obi Mikel shielding the Chelsea back four that's exactly what these Newcastle players have to do. He's not as fashionable as Nemanja Matic but he's still an absolute juggernaut of a player in my opinion.

  7. GREAT SAVE!published at 13:19 Greenwich Mean Time 6 December 2014

Newcastle have not been too adventurous, but when they do get forward they have the best chance of the half as Ayoze Perez cleverly splits the Chelsea defence with a ball for Jack Colback to run on to and the midfielder goes for goal with a low shot, but it is straight at Thibaut Courtois.

Tatenda Chakaduka: I'm a Manchester United fan but I admit that Chelsea are playing the best football this season, they deserve to be champions.

Tor Noppharat: Nemanja Matic is like a moving wall. John Obi Mikel is like a, well, wall. Really wish he was more mobile.

John Pierce: Alan Pardew has made if to four years at Newcastle. Did he, or anyone else, believe he'd make past four months?

Newcastle more than holding their own early on. Chelsea are dominant in possession but none of their efforts have given Newcastle keeper Rob Elliot much cause for concern.

"It really is all Chelsea at the minute. They have been dominating possession and are now starting to create good chances. We always talk about how important that first goal is, how a team starts to play with real confidence, but if Chelsea were to get it… well they are already so comfortable on the ball. And they are so hard to score against too - their defence is so disciplined."

Chelsea are looking increasingly like the team that has dominated so many already this season, they are all over the Newcastle defence but still lacking a little in the final third.

Jack Colback makes a potentially crucial intervention by sticking out a boot to deflect Cesc Fabregas' on-target shot before Eden Hazard breaks into the area but he is flagged offside.

  12. CLOSE!published at 13:07 Greenwich Mean Time 6 December 2014

Eden Hazard is starting to cause a few problems for Newcastle now and he runs at the defence, waits for his team-mates to join him before squaring the ball along the edge of the area. It is a pass aimed for Diego Costa, but he does not react quickly enough to it and instead the ball runs through to Willian, who curls a bouncing effort just wide.

"Chelsea have had the better of the early possession but Newcastle are getting numbers behind the ball and are defending well. Chelsea are not hurting them at the minute. Yes Newcastle would like more of the ball but the way Chelsea pass and move so comfortably, it is hard to get the ball off them."

Gary Wilkinson: Chelsea defend really well. How tight their midfield gets to the defence is why they are unbeaten so far I think.

Kenny Jarvis: Don't think Eden Hazard can be considered world class until he starts putting the ball in the net more often.

Chelsea turning things up a bit now as Gary Cahill heads over from a Cesc Fabregas corner before Diego Costa knocks the ball past Fabricio Coloccini and breaks into the area, but Newcastle get back to snuff out the danger.

  16. Postpublished at 13:02 Greenwich Mean Time 6 December 2014

It has been very much defend first, attack later for Newcastle but they push forward for the first time as Ayoze Perez sends Daryl Janmaat away down the right and he aims a cross for Sammy Ameobi in the Chelsea area, but Thibaut Courtois is quick off his line to make the save. Chelsea then break forward quickly as Eden Hazard runs at goal from his half, but shoots wide.

That's better! A shot on goal as Diego Costa brings a pass under control, flicks the ball into the path of Oscar on the edge of the area and he then finds Willian, who strikes at goal but Rob Elliot dives to push the effort away. He had it covered, but a warning shot from the visitors.

  18. Postpublished at 12:56 Greenwich Mean Time 6 December 2014

Chelsea come forward and again it is Branislav Ivanovic who gets the ball in a promising position on the right before cutting it back to Diego Costa in the middle of the area, but his attempt to control the ball is poor and Newcastle clear. The hosts will be pretty happy with how things are going so far, they are holding Chelsea at arms length.

"It's been a good start from Chelsea - Diego Costa is already running right at the heart of the Newcastle defence. We know what Chelsea are about, and Costa is flying high this season. Today it is a case of whether Newcastle can nullify the Chelsea attack and impose a threat of their own. Remy Cabella and Sammy Ameobi have a big role to play, tracking back to defend in wide areas, because Chelsea go forward in numbers and Newcastle will need all the help they can get."
