"You heard the first 'come on' from the Everton fans. There's a bit of frustration building among the home fans. Everton's best opportunity of goal will be when West Brom show a little bit of attacking intent and leave a bit more space open at the back."

Victor Anichebe is the only West Brom player in the Everton half when the hosts have possession. The Toffees are trying to bundle their way through the centre, which is a struggle with as many as eight players surrounding the blue shirt on the ball.

Leighton Baines has the chance to start a promising counter after a brief foray forward by West Brom, but his long ball is woeful. Groans ring out around the stadium.

"The two managers have contrasting footwear. Roberto Martinez has those tan brogues. A very European look. Tony Pulis meanwhile has the brightest and whitest trainers I think I've ever seen. You can almost get a whiff of that new trainer smell from our commentary position."

As you can probably tell from the above, not a great deal going on on the pitch...

Almost a quarter-of-an-hour gone and Everton are enjoying 88% of the possession. They are seeing plenty of the ball but not doing a great deal with it.

"West Brom boss Tony Pulis will probably be happy with Everton shooting from distance as they are at the moment. They're not offering much going forward but he'll be pleased with their defending"

Leighton Baines follows Kevin Mirallas' lead and fires off a shot from range, it is well hit but Ben Foster is behind it. The West Brom keeper needs a second touch to claim, but was in no real danger.

A round of applause develops around the stadium to remember Jeff Astle, the former West Brom striker who died 13 years ago.

"West Brom will hope to sit back, soak it up and just look to hit Everton on the break just as Arsenal did at Manchester City yesterday. It's up to Everton to break the visitors down."

Left to right, right to left. Everton are struggling to open the West Brom defence and can't make a telling forward pass so Kevin Mirallas instead opts to have a crack from distance. Wide.

Daniel Woodley:, external Everton shouldn't be struggling. Poor management and lack of confidence is to blame. Lose tonight and Martinez is in trouble.

"I know we're only a few minutes in, but Everton need to make more forward passes! They seem to go sideways too much of the time. This crowd need something to get them going. I'm bored already!"

Gareth Barry slides a pass between the West Brom defence for Seamus Coleman on the left side of the area, he clips the ball into the area but West Brom put it behind for a corner, which comes to nothing. West Brom have a disciplined bank of four back defending when Everton try to attack, and it is giving the hosts very little space.

"It's a big night for Everton tonight. They were magnificent at West Ham and I want to see them on the front foot, and to play with pace and aggression again. Because if they lose tonight there will be real questions about Roberto Martinez."

Everton go straight on the offensive as Ross Barkley tries to muscle his way into the area, James Morrison has him in his pocket though and steals possession before clearing.

"When David Moyes was here his hair changed from red to a bit more grey. Looking at Roberto Martinez he seems to have aged recently with the stress of the job."

Roberto Martinez and Tony Pulis shake hands but no time to exchange words. Points are on the table tonight and both will be determined to take all three.

Romelu Lukaku and Saido Berahino enjoy a laugh and a joke in the tunnel before the teams head out on to the pitch. The two are likely to know each other from when Lukaku was at West Brom. Who will still be smiling after 90 minutes, though?

    Conor McNamara
    BBC commentator at Goodison Park

"In my experience Roberto Martinez and Tony Pulis are probably the two Premier League managers least likely to make excuses or blame others.

"Few got more praise last season than these two. Martinez flirted with Champions League qualification in his first year at Goodison Park. Pulis was named the Premier League manager of the year for his Crystal Palace heroics. However, by the start of this campaign Pulis was out of a job and Martinez was suffering second-season syndrome.

"There is one point between Everton and West Brom in the table. They are both perilously close to the relegation zone. That's what makes this game so important. No excuses."

Everton boss Roberto Martinez, speaking to Sky Sports: "The last three performances have been really strong. Different types of games and different types of opponents but we found a way to adapt. We are missing McGeady through suspension but otherwise there is a continuity with the team.

"We need a win, we have not had one for a while and that is not what we want. We go into every game with a real desire to win a football match but West Brom have had a good start under Tony Pulis and will come here believing they can get a result."
