The last time Ghana failed to make the knockout stages was 2006 but my word they were close then.

Avram Grant was all smiles on the pitch, remember this is his first tournament as manager of the Black Stars. Andre Ayew's contribution has spared blushes and probably instantly changed the perception of Grant's impact.

Andre Ayew is perhaps an early contender for player of the tournament.

The Marseille player has played a hand in three of Ghana's four goals at this tournament, that is more than any other player at Afcon 2015.

    So to be clear...

    Group C

Andre Ayew's late goal put Ghana on six points, top of the pile. Had they not scored, they were out on four points due to their head-to-head record with Senegal.

Algeria eased to their win and six points. It all looks straight forward now but by heck it was not.

BBC Sport's Matthew Kenyon in Mongomo: Ghana go off to celebrate whilst Bafana Bafana sit in little groups on the pitch - looking a bit bewildered. The coaching crew led by Shakes Mashaba isn't with the players. They're having a little conference of their own on the touchline.

Algeria have been efficient and taken their chances well. You get the sense they have more to offer as we reach the business end of the tournament.

Their defensive line is on the six-yard box heading away desperate crosses. There is a glum look to faces on Senegal's bench.

South Africa are just playing for pride now but a goal would break Ghana hearts. Ghana have the ball though.

A late substitution to kill any Senegal momentum comes from the Algeria bench.

What a bizarre circumstance Senegal find themselves in. Four minutes of added time in this one. They will likely finish after South Africa, who they need to score.

    Three minutes of injury time.

South Africa are going for this... A goal knocks Ghana out and puts Senegal through. Can they?

Did you know? South Africa has 11 official languages: Afrikaans, English, Ndebele, Northern Sotho, Sotho, Swazi, Tswana, Tsonga, Venda, Xhosa, and Zulu.

In this regard it is third only to Bolivia and India in number. In a 2011 census, English was ranked as the fourth-most common.

Looks like this bunch will be on planes soon. Good news for clubs in Europe. Or have they got something more to offer?

    Senegal

Senegal are praying for a South Africa goal now.

Ghana are now topping Group C. A goal for South Africa though and Senegal qualify at the expense of Ghana.

Incredible stuff as Andre Ayew heads Ghana into the lead. They are going through now at the expense of Senegal. What more drama can happen in the next six minutes?

This changes nothing for Senegal, their fate rests in the hands of Ghana in Mongomo. Algeria though are going into the quarter-finals.

Nabil Bentaleb is mobbed by his team mates. A shot from 25 yards whistles into the corner. A superbly clean striker and the keeper has absolutely no chance. Left footed, have some of that. All the way from Tottenham.
