"With this formation Liverpool look so much better out of possession. They seem to have much more energy about them."

  3. PENALTY APPEALpublished at 13:27 Greenwich Mean Time 10 January 2015

Kevin Kilbane's right - in the last couple of minutes alone Steven Gerrard has smashed a shot into the side netting and had a low effort saved. Liverpool should be out of sight by now.

"Steven Gerrard is playing well again in this advanced role. He has the freedom to get forward, have attempts on goal and influence things in the final third."

  7. HITS THE WOODWORKpublished at 13:23 Greenwich Mean Time 10 January 2015

Lovely stuff from Liverpool as Philippe Coutinho looks up on the left and plays a raking ball which Jordan Henderson expertly controls and smashes against the base of the post from the edge of the area. It wouldn't have counted anyway, though, because the linesman had rather harshly adjudged Henderson to have handled the ball in the motion of controlling it.

    Kevin Kilbane
BBC Radio 5 live at the Stadium of Light

"Sunderland have to put more pressure on Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet at set-pieces. Look at what AFC Wimbledon did the other day. If they had watched that they would see how much pressure they put him under at corners and the problems it caused him."

  9. YELLOW CARDpublished at 13:21 Greenwich Mean Time 10 January 2015

There's already been a few bookings in this match, which is simmering - Liam Bridcutt being cautioned for checking the run of an opponent before Philippe Coutinho is shown yellow for failing to retreat at a free-kick. Silly stuff.

Jon Evans:, external Sunderland really are appalling. Some of the worst football I've seen. Must be bottom three candidates.

Niklas Lanwehr:, external Manager's job is to get the best out of his players, Sunderland players can't play Gus Poyet's style, so he should change it.

Conor McMeekin:, external Don't recall Sunderland playing with this little heart against Chelsea, suppose they played their cup final that day!

"What an effort from Lazar Markovic. The technique for that was top class. He kicked it mid air. A great effort."

"What do we call that from Lazar Markovic? It was a kung fu shot!"

  13. HITS THE WOODWORKpublished at 13:16 Greenwich Mean Time 10 January 2015

Lazar Markovic has risen up in this match. He's virtually unplayable at the moment, this time - seeing the ball on the edge of the area - the midfielder jumps into the air and clips a shot against the bar. Superb technique, a superb effort. Liverpool dominant.

  14. YELLOW CARDpublished at 13:13 Greenwich Mean Time 10 January 2015

Santiago Vergini is the first Sunderland player in the book for pushing an arm into the chest of Alberto Moreno as Liverpool attacked down the left. Steven Gerrard steps up to take the free-kick and his dipping effort is tipped over.

"This is excellent Liverpool pressure, they are keeping the ball well and Sunderland just can't cope with the away team's system at the moment. They've had a few chances and look most likely to score next."

Lazar Markovic does look like he's gaining in confidence - appearing more spritely on his feet as he runs into space and standing tall as he picks his passes. And Liverpool have a decent opportunity to double their lead when Steven Gerrard's low shot is tipped wide by Costel Pantilimon.

Alan Ferguson:, external Get Fabio Borini subbed before he gets another red. Liability.

Javel Bleach:, external I don't get Borini. Plays like he's intent on getting sent off every game. Just a matter of time now again.

Danny McGrane:, external Does Borini want a holiday like Sterling? He's doing his best to get a red here.

  18. HALF-TIMEpublished at 13:05 Greenwich Mean Time 10 January 2015

Tense stuff at Portman Road. Ipswich started the brighter, with chances for Jay Tabb and David McGoldrick, but definitely a case of defences on top. Ipswich started the afternoon second in the Championship, with Derby in third.

Rian Hoskins:, external Lazar Markovic and Emre Can are really now finding their feet. No-one should be judging new signings who are only aged 20.

Stacy Phillips:, external Lazar Markovic is rising! Looking lively today and getting better every week.

Darius Basu:, external The one thing that game against Basel where we were knocked out of the Champions League did which was good - Markovic's form has been on the rise since.

Like an expert puppeteer, Philippe Coutinho is scheming away for Liverpool in the hole but he's lacking punch yet as he continually runs down a cul-de-sac. Nonetheless, this game looks like it might have plenty of goals in it.
