Chance for Robin van Persie, after Wayne Rooney's run, but his goal-bound shot from 15-yards is blocked by Jose Fonte. This isn't going well for United.

Manchester Untied fans are out of their seats. Robin van Persie's lob over the Saints defence sets up Angel Di Maria but instead of passing to the incoming Juan Mata, the former Real Madrid man has a go at goal. And it's a poor, poor attempt.

Daniel Mackay:, external If Falcao is fit then he surely would be a good option for the bench ahead of a rookie striker like Wilson.

Ryan Bertrand goes into the referee's notebook for hauling down Antonio Valencia just outside the Southampton area. But guess what? The hosts can't do anything with the set-piece. I'm sure Saints boss Ronald Koeman is happy with how his side are doing but he looks bored stiff in his seat.

This is a shocker. Very poor. Both defences are on top and both midfields are struggling to create chances for their forwards. It's crying out for a bit of quality.

"Michael Carrick was on his heels and didn't see the run of Fonte, who should've done a lot better with the free header inside the box for Southampton. Smalling was also pulling Pelle by the shirt and we've seen penalties given for that this season."

Rare chance as Steven Davis clips the ball into Manchester United's penalty area and Jose Fonte heads wide. Lots of shirt pulling going on inside the United area as that ball came in.

Wayne Rooney doesn't look particularly happy in midfield. He's been careless a couple of times with his passing and is struggling to create chances for Angel Di Maria and Robin van Persie. This game is devoid of goal mouth activity.

Eljero Elia's arrival in the Premier League has gone largely unnoticed outside Southampton but the winger is making a nuisance of himself at Old Trafford. He is certainly not lacking in confidence and has already caused Chris Smalling and Phil Jones problems.

First real shot in anger from the hosts. And it's from the boot of Angel Di Maria who fires well wide. United have yet to hit third gear. Saints will be pleased with this start.

Great vision by Toby Alderweireld to cut out Wayne Rooney's ball to Angel Di Maria but there's trouble for the Southampton man. He appears to have hurt a muscle and hobbles off. Florin Gardos is set to come on.

Southampton's visiting fans are in tremendous voice. Not much noise from the hosts with their side yet to fire. This is like a game of chess so far. Very little in this.
