"It's very hard for United to make that killer pass in behind the back four as both Wanyama and Schneiderlin are cutting out anything as they sit in front of the defence."

United are finishing the half on the front foot. It opens up for Angel Di Maria just outside the Saints box and he lets fly with Fraser Forster happy to see the ball whistle narrowly wide.

Chance for Robin van Persie, after Wayne Rooney's run, but his goal-bound shot from 15-yards is blocked by Jose Fonte. This isn't going well for United.

    Robbie Savage
BBC Radio 5 live at Old Trafford

"We just need a shot here. Something to get the crowd going, to create some atmosphere. Southampton fans want to see chances, United fans want to see chances, but it just hasn't got going yet."

Good news, everybody. Half-time is five minutes away.

    Robbie Savage

"Gardos looks a bag of nerves since he's come on and he gave the ball away initially there from a bad pass, but Di Maria couldn't quite control that ball from Van Persie."

  7. Postpublished at 16:39 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2015

Manchester Untied fans are out of their seats. Robin van Persie's lob over the Saints defence sets up Angel Di Maria but instead of passing to the incoming Juan Mata, the former Real Madrid man has a go at goal. And it's a poor, poor attempt.

Daniel Mackay:, external If Falcao is fit then he surely would be a good option for the bench ahead of a rookie striker like Wilson.

Phil Johnson:, external All the midfield talent for United, yet no shots and no distribution to RVP.

Ryan Bertrand goes into the referee's notebook for hauling down Antonio Valencia just outside the Southampton area. But guess what? The hosts can't do anything with the set-piece. I'm sure Saints boss Ronald Koeman is happy with how his side are doing but he looks bored stiff in his seat.

This is a shocker. Very poor. Both defences are on top and both midfields are struggling to create chances for their forwards. It's crying out for a bit of quality.

    Robbie Savage
BBC Radio 5 live at Old Trafford

"Michael Carrick was on his heels and didn't see the run of Fonte, who should've done a lot better with the free header inside the box for Southampton. Smalling was also pulling Pelle by the shirt and we've seen penalties given for that this season."

  13. Postpublished at 16:31 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2015

Rare chance as Steven Davis clips the ball into Manchester United's penalty area and Jose Fonte heads wide. Lots of shirt pulling going on inside the United area as that ball came in.

  14. Postpublished at 16:29 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2015

Wayne Rooney doesn't look particularly happy in midfield. He's been careless a couple of times with his passing and is struggling to create chances for Angel Di Maria and Robin van Persie. This game is devoid of goal mouth activity.

  15. Postpublished at 16:26 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2015

Eljero Elia's arrival in the Premier League has gone largely unnoticed outside Southampton but the winger is making a nuisance of himself at Old Trafford. He is certainly not lacking in confidence and has already caused Chris Smalling and Phil Jones problems.

  16. Postpublished at 16:23 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2015

    Robbie Savage
BBC Radio 5 live at Old Trafford

"How great it is for two teams third and fourth in the Premier League table to see so many Academy products in both matchday squads."

  17. Postpublished at 16:22 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2015

First real shot in anger from the hosts. And it's from the boot of Angel Di Maria who fires well wide. United have yet to hit third gear. Saints will be pleased with this start.

Great vision by Toby Alderweireld to cut out Wayne Rooney's ball to Angel Di Maria but there's trouble for the Southampton man. He appears to have hurt a muscle and hobbles off. Florin Gardos is set to come on.

Jerry Elumeze:, external Di Maria is wasted any place on the field other than the wings where he can run at the defence.

Jeremiah Kariuki:, external Southampton showing their strength at the back. Quite well organised than Man Utd.

  20. Postpublished at 16:16 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2015

Southampton's visiting fans are in tremendous voice. Not much noise from the hosts with their side yet to fire. This is like a game of chess so far. Very little in this.
