"Sheffield United need more creativity in the final third tonight. They were excellent at White Hart Lane without really looking like scoring but tonight they need to score first.

"But if they stay in the game until 70 minutes, if it's 0-0, then you never know. One goal takes it to extra time."

  2. "We need to forget the first leg"published at 19:37 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January 2015

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino: "We expect a tough game in Sheffield. We need to focus on our game and be aggressive.

"We need to forget the first leg and treat the game like it is 0-0. We have 90 minutes ahead which will be very tough. To go the final we must be clever.

"We always practice penalties. Every week."

Graphic showing how Nigel Clough's cup record at Sheffield United compares with his league record

Something strange has been going on at Sheffield United since Nigel Clough was appointed manager in October 2013. After he took charge of his first cup match the following month, the Blades have been an irresistible force in knockout competitions, while failing to match that form in League One. Indeed, in 2014 they set a record for shocks in cup competitions - beating six opponents from higher divisions.

Since Clough took over, they have beaten five Premier League teams and lost just twice to top-flight opponents - the FA Cup semi-final defeat by Hull and last week's League Cup semi-final first-leg game at Tottenham.

Since the graphic above was produced, the Blades have drawn 1-1 at Preston in the FA Cup and could entertain Manchester United in the fifth round.

  11. From Buenos Aires to Bramall Lanepublished at 19:20 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January 2015

Lots of interest in Argentina around this tie - and not just because of Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino. Sheffield United fans of a certain age will remember Alejandro Sabella turning out at Bramall Lane in 1978. That's the same Alejandro Sabella who managed Argentina last summer's World Cup.

The story goes that United manager Harry Haslam travelled to Argentina on a scouting mission. He wanted to sign Diego Maradona but returned with Sabella.

Apparently his wife was less enthusiastic about swapping Buenos Aires for the Steel City, adding: "It seems to be a very quiet life here. In the evenings in Sheffield there doesn't appear to be a lot of nightlife."

Half an hour until kick-off and snow is now falling heavily on Bramall Lane. Many of Tottenham's players are wearing gloves and long-sleeved tops during the pre-match warm-up. It's a horrible night in the Steel City.

  16. Costa charged with violent conductpublished at 19:10 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January 2015

No doubt about the biggest football story of the day. Chelsea forward Diego Costa has been charged with violent conduct by the Football Association following the League Cup semi-final against Liverpool on Tuesday.

The Spain striker is accused of stamping on Liverpool defender Emre Can in the 12th minute of the 1-0 victory. He faces a three-match ban and could miss Saturday's league match with Manchester City at Stamford Bridge. The player has until 18:00 GMT on Thursday to respond to the charge.

Former Republic of Ireland winger Kevin Kilbane at Bramall Lane

"Why have Spurs left out goalkeeper Hugo Lloris? Michel Vorm made a bad mistake against Leicester at the weekend and he is under real pressure tonight. Sheffield United will target Vorm from set-pieces and it's snowing already. That won't help him.

"Lloris is one of the best keepers in the world, never mind the Premier League. It's baffling."

Former Sheffield United and Tottenham midfielder Michael Brown on 5 live: "You certainly wouldn't back against Sheffield United. I think they have been fantastic in all the games they have played against Premier League opposition and they showed last week what they're all about.

"They weren't afraid and they played really, really well on the night. It will be very difficult for Tottenham tonight and they must improve from the last game.

"You look at last weekend and there were some amazing results. Bradford only a couple of years ago got to the final so why not for Sheffield United? Tottenham must start a lot quicker and more confident. I don't think the weather is going to help them tonight but they need to be much stronger than the first game."
