It's all very low key at the moment. Am I allowed to scale back my prediction of an "absolute humdinger"? Where's that delete key?

  2. League One updatepublished at 16:21 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2015

Matt Smith has given Bristol City the lead at Ashton Gate, stabbing home from a Joe Bryan delivery deviated by the head of Derrick Williams. As it stands, Steve Cotterill's side will be returning to the top of the table, leapfrogging MK Dons.

Bafetimbi Gomis is flagged offside after firing in a shot on the turn which is parried by Fraser Forster. Good pass from Jonjo Shelvey in the build-up.

Chibuzo C. Ejike: What is wrong with Swansea? More of that! They came to play against Southampton, not to get played.

Simon Hancock: Going to be difficult for Swansea today in midfield, missing Britton, Montero, Ki, Routledge and Sigurdsson.

I'm sure you know this already, but it's transfer deadline day tomorrow. A football fan's Christmas Day. I wonder what each Premier League manager is currently doing? I imagine Sandra Redknapp is telling Harry off for using his phone at the dinner table. Jose? He's speaking to no-one.

  7. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 16:15 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2015

Marvin Emnes has injured himself early on and he's subbed for Mo Barrow with tears welling in his eyes. He's distraught. Poor lad.

    Former England manager Graham Taylor
BBC Radio 5 live at St Mary's Stadium

"The way Southampton are playing is absolutely first class. You feel it is only a matter of time before they take the lead. Certainly if they had been a bit more clinical with their chances they would be comfortably ahead. Whenever they are in possession they look as though they are going to cause Swansea a threat. But having said that, I'm almost immediately proved wrong by Bafetimbi Gomis. Swansea will take heart from that. A good move."

  9. CLOSE!published at 16:13 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2015

From nowhere, Bafetimbi Gomis bursts into life on the edge of the box and cracks a stinging effort into the stanchion. Good effort.

Southampton are touching 72% possession in these early stages. Swansea have hardly touched the ball.

Tom Holmes: I'm predicting a 3-1 Southampton win. Swansea don't look as impressive after a run of poor performances.

    Former England manager Graham Taylor

"A first class save. It was hit hard, a first-time shot, but what a reaction from Lukasz Fabianski. What I like about Southampton is that when they play the ball the person who plays it never stands still. Pass and move. That is always very hard to deal with. They are the dominant side here."

  13. GREAT SAVE!published at 16:07 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2015

The Saints are beginning to hit the high notes as they zip the ball about and spread the ball wide before delivering the perfect cross for James Ward-Prowse to sidefoot a low shot from 12 yards - only to be denied by Lukasz Fabianski's fine save.

  14. PENALTY APPEALpublished at 16:05 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2015

Mmmm, an interesting early decision for referee Michael Oliver as Ryan Bertrand races into the penalty area but is blocked off by Federico Fernandez and goes tumbling. No penalty, says the ref. He gets that one right - Bertrand had over-run the ball - after a difficult night on Tuesday in that Chelsea v Liverpool clash.

    Former England manager Graham Taylor
BBC Radio 5 live at St Mary's Stadium

"Swansea have lost their way somewhat. It is very important for them to recover from the sale of Wilfried Bony, because they have fallen away a little since. In the second half of the season you can start to think negatively and look behind you. I would imagine many of the side will look at the league table and feel a little bit concerned about where they are."

  19. Manager reactionpublished at 15:58 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2015

Aston Villa boss Paul LambertImage source, PA

Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert on Sky Sports: "For 65 minutes or so we were in the game. We had a great chance at the end of the first half and I thought Christian [Benteke] should have score after half-time. The goals after that were very poor from our point of view. The reaction to the goals was poor.

"It is difficult, when you don't score you don't win games. You have to keep working hard in training and hopefully it turns around. We had chances to score but you have to take them. We have to keep our confidence up. We came into this with confidence.

"We have definitely got enough [to stay up]. If we can do one or two more [signings] then we will try. It is not easy to bring people in but if we can we will. I am looking for anybody who can improve the side."

  20. Manager reactionpublished at 15:58 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2015

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger on Sky Sports: "It was positive because we kept a clean sheet. We know we can score goals. We needed to be patient because they tried to stop us going forward. With time going on we had a chance to play through their lines and that made the difference.

"You cannot fault anyone's performance. Mesut [Ozil] did well. It takes a while to get that sharpness back.

"We had a rigorous attitude defensively. Even at 4-0, 5-0 up people were willing to work back. We want to play collectively and offensively to the end.

"You could see that mentally for Villa the second goal was a big blow to them. They are in a difficult position."
