"Both sides look a little bit edgy so far. Boro are desperate to go top of the table, Wigan to stay in the league. There's been a lot of errors. Boro just need Grant Leadbitter and Adam Clayton to get the ball into the feet of Patrick Bamford. I'm very excited about seeing him today. He's a very intelligent footballer, and deserves his chance in the Premier League. A Teddy Sheringham sort of player."

Middlesbrough's on-loan Chelsea striker Patrick Bamford is continuing to show this season that he is one of the Championship's brightest talents, and he almost wriggles into space inside the Wigan penalty area here. But the Latics get back in numbers to block his effort and then clear Grant Leadbitter's right-wing cross.

  3. GREAT SAVE!published at 15:16 British Summer Time 3 April 2015

Norwich continue to push for the opener as Brighton goalkeeper David Stockdale is called into action again. Gordon Greer slips and lets in Cameron Jerome, he plays in Wes Hoolahan but his shot is saved. Norwich could go top with a win.

It is throwing it down at St Andrew's, where Rotherham are in desperate need of a win in their battle against relegation. David Cotterill goes close for Birmingham though, as he spins on the ball before having a shot blocked Craig Morgan. Wigan fans will have half on eye on this one.

Plenty of derby fever in the English capital today, with Charlton Athletic making the short trip to south London rivals Millwall.

The Lions, who are second bottom and in desperate need of a win, carve the best opportunities early doors, but neither Lee Gregory nor Shaun Williams can trouble the Charlton keeper.

  6. Postpublished at 15:10 British Summer Time 3 April 2015

Just the one clear opening in the west London derby at Craven Cottage so far, Fulham winger Alex Kacaniklic twisting into space in the box and forcing a decent stop from Brentford stopper David Button at his near post.

  7. CLOSE!published at 15:09 British Summer Time 3 April 2015

A big let off for Wolves goalkeeper Carl Ikeme. He dallies and dallies and his delayed clearance is closed down by Michail Antonio but the ball deflects behind for a goal kick. Almost red-face time for Ikeme.

  8. Postpublished at 15:09 British Summer Time 3 April 2015

    Former Middlesbrough defender Danny Mills
BBC Radio 5 live at the Riverside Stadium

"It's a very attacking line-up from Boro. Already it looks like they are going to have a real go at Wigan, and player for player the Boro XI are full of confidence and should win this game. The opening 15 minutes are crucial though. For the moment Wigan look happy to let the home side have the ball."

Little to tell you from the Riverside - in fact there is little to tell you from anywhere in the Championship. Stick with us people, it'll happen. Both sides seeing plenty of the ball in these opening exchanges, but neither keeper tested yet.

  10. CLOSE!published at 15:07 British Summer Time 3 April 2015

First chance of the match falls to Norwich City as Wes Hoolahan sets up Bradley Johnson 25 yards out and his shot is parried wide by Brighton goalkeeper David Stockdale.

Imagine travelling 350 miles from Portsmouth to Carlisle, a trip of five hours plus, to watch your team on Good Friday. Then imagine the pain of seeing your team going one down after two minutes. Oh. That is exactly what has happened for the Pompey hardcore - Carlisle lead with about 100 seconds on the clock.

Referees up and down the land look at their watches, do a quick head count, then give their whistles a good old peep for the first time. And that, unless I'm very much mistaken, means today's Good Friday action is under way!

About 30 kids are stood outside of the Riverside tunnel, wafting a variety of coloured-flags around in the cool Teesside air. Today they will seeing the likes of Wigan pair Leon Clarke and Gaetan Bong trudge past them in a minute - next season it could be Wayne Rooney and Sergio Aguero. Think I know which pair they would rather see. No offence Leon and Gaetan.

The top eight teams in the Championship are separated by just eight points with seven games remaining. Which thrilling finales can you remember?

Tim Arstall: Have to point towards the Women's Super League finale last season. Three teams could have won on the final day, third-placed Liverpool eventually did.

    Former Middlesbrough defender Danny Mills
BBC Radio 5 live at the Riverside Stadium

"Obviously Middlesbrough have no right to be in Premier League, but the set-up here really is fantastic, the training ground is exceptional. This season though there are so many clubs fighting to get back in the top flight. Boro had been top for a while, and they could go top again today with a win, but I don't think it's ever been this close at the top of the Championship table."

That's right Danny - as our graphic below shows, it has never been this tight.

    POints gap

It doesn't get much tighter does it? The top eight in the Championship are separated by just eight points with seven games remaining. A look at recent seasons shows the gap between the top eight has never been so narrow.
