A Manchester United corner into a crowded Everton penalty box and the ball drops for Marouane Fellaini to hit it 10 yards out.

Goodison holds its breath. But Andre Marriner parps his whistle for a foul as the Belgian thumps a shot into a thicket of defenders.

Everton have another corner after Paddy McNair and David De Gea get their wires crossed and the defender has to hurriedly boot behind.

Leighton Baines cannot match his earlier delivery though, the ball sailing out of the back of the penalty box.

Radamel Falcao has been sent down the touchline to warm up by Louis van Gaal.

Time to drop Wayne Rooney back a bit and get him more involved?

There were plenty of games earlier this season when Manchester United played poorly but got a result.

Today they have got the opposite issue - playing decently but shipping goals at an alarming frequency.

Stones was pretty much unchallenged for his scoring header.

"It's a fantastic header. John Stones is a talented player with a great mentality. Things are looking good for him in the future."

    Nothing complex about that one.

The corner is whipped into the near post and John Stones rises high and contorts his neck to bullet a header towards the far post.

David De Gea is beaten by the accuracy of the header and the power of it does for Ashley Young stationed on the line.

Everton are looking sharp as razors on the counter.

Again Seamus Coleman's pace down the right is the outlet, but the full back can't quite pick out Romelu Lukaku in the middle.

Ashley Young jags in off the left flank and lets fly with his right peg. That is straight at Gareth Barry though and the Everton man puts his head in front of the ball to clear.

Got to love a chested lay-off.

Wayne Rooney shows off one of football's lesser-seen bits of skill, but Ashley Young cannot take advantage, clearing the cross bar from distance as he takes on the first-time shot.

Jeet Padaruth: "This is where United miss Carrick. He'd be in Fellaini's ear calming him down. Walking red card at the moment."

Howard Roark: "Fellaini yellow card. Leopard doesn't change its spots. Good job Everton getting £28 mill"

Richard: Everton's game plan: Kick Fellaini.

Kevin, London: Hold your breath for another prickly interview with Van Gaal. I can see 80 minutes of United domination but 1-0 final score. Rooney up front is not a game changer by any means.

Romelu Lukaku does his best Didier Drogba impression, taking the ball with his back to goal 30 yards out, dummying a lay-off to the overlapping Seamus Coleman and turning to wallop a shot goalwards.

Straight into the bread basket for David De Gea though.

Everton have had only 33% of possession so far, but they finally get a bit of ball.

Manchester United are full of hassle and hustle though, chasing them back into their own half with Marouane Fellaini and Daley Blind particularly busy.

"Marouane Fellaini needs to be careful now he is on a yellow card. He does make fouls. I went to watch him before he signed for Everton a few years ago - he got sent off after 17 minutes for a culmination of a few fouls."

Adam, Edinburgh: I think Daley Blind is a fantastic player, but his tackling has been suspect at best this whole season. Not the first time he's half heartedly gone in and the attacking player has found his way through to goal.

Mark Taylor: How many lucky breaks there then? It might not be our day today with luck like that!

Eyobel Gomini: McNair should be stronger and more aggressive on McCarthy!

Chris Smalling has developed into a serious attacking aerial threat this season.

He gets up well again to meet Juan Mata's free-kick. There is plenty of power in his header but it is straight at Tim Howard.

Luke Shaw looks like he might have picked up a groin strain by the way.

  17. Postpublished at 13:50 British Summer Time 26 April 2015

Everton's Tim Howard is out bravely to dive at the feet of Wayne Rooney close to the byeline.

The American might have sprained one of his fingers in doing so. That seems to be what he is gesturing to the bench anyway.

Manchester United are connecting the dots in attack, slicing through the Everton defence as Ashley Young, Marouane Fellaini and Juan Mata set up Daley Blind on the edge of the box.

His shot is a trundler though and Tim Howard is practically lying in wait for it after diving to his left.

Romelu Lukaku takes the resulting free-kick, striding towards it like Roberto Carlos from 40 yards. His effort is not in the Brazilian's league, but his daisycutter is controlled by Leon Osman who swivels and snaps a shot at goal.

He doesn't connect cleanly though and David De Gea scoops it up with ease.

Agricultural from Marouane Fellaini as he hacks Seamus Coleman's standing leg from under him and, a minute later, the Manchester United man shoulders Ross Barkley to the floor.

Referee Andre Marriner tots them up and issues yellow.
