"There was a real sadness within the whole stadium about Steven Gerrard coming to the end of his Liverpool career today. I still think he should have been kept on for next season. With Raheem Sterling refusing to sign, I think it would have been good news if Gerrard had been persuaded to stay on and continue to bring his experience to this group of young players. That would have been good management from Brendan Rodgers."

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Tim Sherwood said: "I don't want to go over the top but - Fabian Delph - there's not a better midfielder in the country at the moment.

"He breaks the play up, he carries the ball well and he can pass it. He's got everything to his game and he can score.

"He's got an array of talent. He's vital for us."

  4. 'Confidence, resilience, quality'published at 17:15 British Summer Time 2 May 2015

Former Aston Villa striker Dion Dublin
    Final Score

"Aston Villa are just oozing confidence. When they came out on the pitch for the second half they were joking around, nudging each other, and when you get that kind of atmosphere in a team you get quality with it. Villa have been working hard and have shown great resilience but a lot of players are coming to the fore with real quality now."

  5. 'We want to nick seventh'published at 17:14 British Summer Time 2 May 2015

Swansea midfielder Jonjo Shelvey: "We want to cement eighth place and maybe nick seventh. We have to keep pushing. The gaffer won't let us rest. He's pushed us harder than ever this week."

  6. Manager reactionpublished at 17:13 British Summer Time 2 May 2015

    Southampton

Southampton boss Ronald Koeman: "We didn't play at our level and it is very strange. We played much better with 10 players than with 11 and it was unbelievable that we were not able to play as well. There was a period just before half-time that was the worst 10 minutes of the season.

"We didn't show enough today and it was frustrating, but everything in the last three games of the season."

    Everton

Everton manager Roberto Martinez: "In the first half, we were second best. We didn't compete as we normally do - that's not how we've been performing.

"The second half was completely different. We created enough to get something out of the game.

"It was a disappointing to give 45 minutes away. That was not good enough, that's not the level we set for ourselves."

On his goal: "I was happy with my header, it wasn't the best I have scored, that was my header in the Champions League final. It was a good three points, we have to stay strong till the end and keep pressure on the teams above us."

On last goal at Anfield? "We have one more game to go here at Anfield and I will do my best to get on the score sheet. If that is my last goal at Anfield then I will take it but I won't give up."

So, what have today's results done to the bottom of the table? Burnley and QPR look all but gone, but wins for Sunderland, Leicester and Aston Villa bunch things up in the battle to avoid that third from bottom spot.

Newcastle, who have lost eight in a row, are just two points clear of safety...

  17. Postpublished at 17:00 British Summer Time 2 May 2015

    Steve Bower
BBC Match of the Day commentator

"Most of United's problems this term have come away from home. The foundation has been at Old Trafford, where the fear factor has returned. They have lost just two Premier League home games, earning 43 points, and are aiming for a seventh successive home league win.

"Four points from the last six available has been a welcome return for West Brom after three straight defeats. What will add to the pleasure for Tony Pulis is they've also kept successive clean sheets.

"They can safely look forward to more stability and a sixth successive season in the top flight."

Sunderland striker Danny Graham: "We got the penalties but Jordi Gomez had to put them away under immense pressure. Costel pulled us out at the end with a great reaction save. We deserved the points."
