Jamie McKellar: Chelsea did what they had to do today, professional as ever! Harsh on Herrera mind

  8. LvG does Abba

    Chelsea 1-0 Man Utd

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal: "In my opinion it was the best performance we have had this season. We were not effective because we have created, despite the defensive organisation of Chelsea, three chances in the first half and eight in the second half.

"That is unbelievably good. We were the dominant team on the pitch but we lose. Everything is the result.

"Everybody can have his own opinion and the winner takes it all. It's a song, but it's like that.

"The title is not definitely gone because we can still win 15 points."

  9. Manager reaction

    Chelsea 1-0 Man Utd

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho: "Six games to play, three at home three away. Every game is difficult, every team needs points. But out situation is very good.

"It was difficult but less than you think. We prepared for the game to be like this. It was the game we wanted and expected. Control their direct football to Fellaini and control the wingers from making crosses on the inside foot. When we know Rooney plays in midfield we control his progression into the box. Control set-pieces and don't give away direct free-kicks as they have three specialists. Wait for a mistake and score a goal. It was what we wanted it to be. We are happy because the work we did in the week was what happened here.

"De Gea should see red because he had a handball outside the box. That is the only situation where he can speak. Apart from that the referee did a good job. [On the Herrera potential penalty incident] If it is Chelsea player nobody speak about anything else but diving for a week.

"I feel we are almost there but there are no almosts in football. We need eight points to be champions. It is pure mathematics."

Dave: Herrera the one creating the contact, not the other way round! No pen. Great call from the ref.

Critical Richard: De gea not sent off for clearly handling outside the area and yet its Chelsea who are lucky ... whatever makes you feel better

Steve Found: it's not Chelsea's fault that United couldn't beat a team with both preferred strikers out & played nearly twice as many games.

  11. Post update

    Chelsea 1-0 Man Utd

Top class interviews from both managers. Louis van Gaal declaring his side's performance the best of the season but Jose Mourinho insisting that the game was exactly as he planned.

  12. 'We made them disappear'

    Chelsea 1-0 Man Utd

    Jose Mourinho

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho: "We need our points but if they come against teams in second or in third it helps us. Today we won three points and our direct opponent lost three points. We are focussed on us, we have six matches to play and we need eight points.

"The game was exactly the game we want. The only thing we couldn't do was to kill the game with a second goal. We were able to make their important players disappear. Nobody saw them. They were in our pockets.

"Football is talent but strategy is also important."

"Did it please you to win a game like that? "I love it."

  13. Manager reaction

    Chelsea 1-0 Man Utd

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal: "I am not frustrated I am proud. Why should I be frustrated? We played the best match of the season.

"In my opinion that is the main decision of the referee [the potential penalty incident involving Ander Herrera] Maybe you can watch the replays on television."

  14. 'We have dominated the champions in waiting'

    Chelsea 1-0 Man Utd

More from Wayne Rooney talking to BBC Sport:

"It was a very good performance. We dominated in terms of possession and chances but we didn't take any and it has cost us.

    Rooney

"We have dominated the champions in waiting. It was a good performance from the team.

"On another day we would score three or four goals. We knew we had the players who could dominate. We are proud of the performance.

"Chelsea know how to slow the game down and get the referee on their side, which they did today very well. They have won the game so I am sure they are going to be champions."

  15. Post update

    Chelsea 1-0 Man Utd

Louis van Gaal has a face of thunder and simply says: "It doesn't matter how I feel."

    Full reaction to come.

  16. 'Our best performance of the season'

    Chelsea 1-0 Man Utd

    Rooney

Manchester United midfielder Wayne Rooney talking to Sky Sports:

"We dominated the game, had the best chances and we are a team that is improving. It was always going to be tough to win the title and today confirmed that.

"I am proud of the team that we dominated the game so much. It is probably the best performance of the season against the champions in waiting.

"We have had a lot of injuries. I have said before, if the manager wants me to play midfield I have no problem in doing that."

  17. Post update

    Chelsea 1-0 Man Utd

Manchester United have suffered more Premier League defeats against Chelsea than versus any other side (16).

The Red Devils have failed to score for the first time in 12 Premier League games and for only the second time in 2015.

  19. 'You never know'

    Chelsea 1-0 Man Utd

Chelsea forward Eden Hazard talking to Sky Sports:

    Eden Hazard

"It is always good to win against Manchester United. We have to win two or three more games.

"It was very difficult, they played very well. They are very big players and we are lucky to score maybe in the first half.

"I try to score, to create something and today I did very well. That's my job.

"We are close but it is not finished. In England you never know."

  20. 'Happy to see Rooney in midfield'

    Chelsea 1-0 Man Utd

Chelsea captain John Terry talking to Sky Sports:

"It was a massive win and we are delighted with that ahead of Arsenal next week. They dictated the game better than we did.

    John Terry

"We have not been playing as well as we can of late but we have been grinding out results and we did that again.

"We were delighted to see Wayne Rooney in midfield. A phenomenal player and such a threat in that role behind the striker.

"We have dipped a bit but we are still picking up results and that is a sign of champions. It has been four years since we won the league and we are very determined. Still not done yet."

Dewi Evans: when a player, 'looks for a foul', and wins it, there's nothing wrong, so how is what Herrera did any different?

Nathan Rowley: This is the way to win the league, surely now hazard deserves player of the year over de gea!

  26. PENALTY APPEAL

Definite contact. But did Herrera move his leg into Gary Cahill? Big call.

  27. SUBSTITUTION

  31. Post update

    Chelsea 1-0 Man Utd

BBC Sport chief football writer Phil McNulty at Stamford Bridge

"Final whistle and victory in sight for Chelsea now. Manchester United have been dominating possession but once again they have ran into a blue wall of resistance built by Jose Mourinho's organisation. Even if they lose, however, Louis van Gaal's side have confirmed again that they are now a very different proposition from earlier in the season."

A chance! And he knows it. Wayne Rooney gets away from John Terry to meet Angel Di Maria's corner and he heads over the bar. He's not scored against a team managed by Jose Mourinho in 15 games.

  35. Post update

    Valencia

Manchester United have had a whopping 70.7% of possession. That's massive. But it will count for nothing unless they can find a way through.

  36. SUBSTITUTION

    Chelsea 1-0 Man Utd

Luke Shaw has been impressive this afternoon but he can't finish the game, on comes Tyler Blackett in his place.

Ten minutes for United to salvage something - or for Chelsea to pick them off.

  37. Join the debate at #bbcfootball

Antony Wilson: It's refreshing for United to be the better side yet losing. They now know how half their opponents have felt this season.

Edward Small: I understand the frustration but Mourinho knows how to win titles and big games. Besides, his sides score when he wants them to.

Ross Samski: The fact Chelsea will win the Premier League playing Sunday league football goes to show what a poor season it's been. Quite embarrassing.

  38. HITS THE WOODWORK

    Chelsea 1-0 Man Utd

Radamel Falcao shows a glimpse of what he can do, fine movement to slip in behind Kurt Zouma and break into the box, he hits a left-footed drive but it rattles against the outside of the post!

As close as United have come.

    Hazard

A lovely give and go from Eden Hazard but he drags his shot at David De Gea. Hazard a class above this afternoon - player of the year?

Chelsea 15 minutes away from another win. A foul throw from Branislav Ivanovic! You don't get many of those in a season.

  41. Post update

    Chelsea 1-0 Man Utd

That double change for United could leave them even more open to the counter but you can't fault Louis Van Gaal for effort. These are the games Angel Di Maria was expected to boss.

  42. SUBSTITUTION

    Chelsea 1-0 Man Utd

Kurt Zouma has stuck to Marouane Fellaini all afternoon to cut him out of the game. Now a double change from the visitors.

Angel Di Maria replaces Ashley Young and Juan Mata is also off. Mata gets a huge reception from the home fans. On comes Adnan Januzaj.

Jon: This is like United playing a bottom three side at Old Trafford, who come for a draw a nick a goal with one of their two attacks.

Christian Mescall: Mourinho brings on Ramires, think he's happy with a 1-0

Craig M Evans: Typical Mourinho looking to park the bus? Oscar off Ramires on!

  44. CLOSE!

    Chelsea 1-0 Man Utd

    Falcao

Manchester United doing all of the attacking. Radamel Falcao has rarely been involved today but hits a swerving strike wide from 25 yards. Chelsea bring off Oscar and replace him with fellow Brazilian Ramires. Pace. Energy.

  45. FA CUP LATEST

    Reading 1-1 Arsenal

It's all square at Wembley with 15 minutes of normal time remaining. Will there be a winner?

  46. CLOSE!

    Chelsea 1-0 Man Utd

    Rooney

Good play again from Luke Shaw - having a fine second half - as his cross is laid back to Wayne Rooney on the edge of the box. It's there to be hit - but it's deflected wide.

  47. CLOSE!

    Chelsea 1-0 Man Utd

Paddy McNair is allowed to advance from the back and he hits a swerving strike from 25 yards which almost catches Thibaut Courtois out, he can only push the ball back out and it's bundled over the top from close range. Time for United to crank the pressure up?

  48. Post update

    Chelsea 1-0 Man Utd

BBC Sport chief football writer Phil McNulty at Stamford Bridge

"An hour gone and still nicely poised. Chelsea have the lead and for all Manchester United's problems they just cannot fashion that breakthrough. Louis van Gaal has options on the bench in Angel Di Maria and Robin van Persie - he will soon be thinking about using them."

  49. Post update

    Chelsea 1-0 Man Utd

    Positions

An hour gone, and the average positions of both sides tell you who's been pushing on all game. Manchester United have often left Paddy McNair (33) and Chris Smalling (12) at the back and pushed everyone else up.

Eden Hazard (10) is Chelsea's chief outlet.

  50. Join the debate at #bbcfootball

Peter Malath: Playing Falcao ahead of Di Maria is like buying a Ferrari and driving a Ford Pinto instead. £60m player on the bench.

KN: Lucky escape. Really miss Carrick's passing. #CFC happy to let Smalling and McNair have the ball.

Atif siddiqui: Chelsea don't deserve to win the league all they do is park the bus.

Shohidur Rahman: I can't see how we're gonna score. With Falcao up front we're pretty much playing with 10 men.

Shane O'Neill: 70% possession and easily the better team, United undone again by Mike Dean. Happens way too often to be a coincidence

  51. Post update

    Chelsea 1-0 Man Utd

A second Chelsea goal on the counter attack looks the most likely route to more action as United commit more and more men forward. Excellent run forwards from Luke Shaw sees Branislav Ivanovic booked for a trip on him. Can the visitors profit from this free-kick out wide?

    No.

  52. HITS THE WOODWORK

    Chelsea 1-0 Man Utd

    Drogba

Almost two! Chelsea hit United on the break, Didier Drogba hasn't got the legs to burn past last man Chris Smalling any more, but he is strong enough to hold him off and get a shot away. Drogba's shot deflects over the head of David De Gea, Eden Hazard sprints in to get there and hooks the loose ball against the crossbar from a tight angle!

  53. Post update

    Chelsea 1-0 Man Utd

Manchester United's last league defeat came at the hands of Swansea in February. Unless they find a breakthrough in the remaining 40 minutes it'll be a sixth loss of the season.

  54. Post update

Manchester United continue to boss the ball as Chelsea coax them on to them. Can you score? That's the question Chelsea are asking, all the while waiting to use Eden Hazard on the counter.

Andrew Morris: Manchester United looking dangerous but don't have that pure incisiveness of Chelsea yet. United shade the first half but still losing.

Richard Elliott: The way he is playing I wouldn't be surprised if this is Falcao's last game for United.

    Radamel Falcao

Atif Siddiqui: Falcao just isn't cut out for the premier league, get rid of him and bring back Hernandez!

Richard: This performance is reminiscent of earlier in the season. Slow. #CFC will just sit 17 men behind the ball and wait now.

J: Chelsea very lucky, done nothing but foul Utd players, got away with one which led to the goal. Poor officiating as per usual.

  61. HALF-TIME

    Chelsea 1-0 Man Utd

BBC Sport chief football writer Phil McNulty at Stamford Bridge

    Hazard

"Manchester United will feel hard done by to be behind but that was classic Chelsea - soak it up and then wait for the moment to strike. And the strike was perfectly executed by Eden Hazard."

  62. HALF-TIME

    Chelsea 1-0 Man Utd

Half-time and Eden Hazard's 18th goal of the season has Chelsea on top. United seeing all of the ball but none of the points.

  63. Post update

    Chelsea 1-0 Man Utd

Great play Thibaut Courtois! So alert, the Chelsea keeper springs from his lie to bat the ball away from Radamel Falcao. A key intervention.

  64. Post update

    Chelsea 1-0 Man Utd

    Oscar

Chelsea going 10 points clear at the top of the Premier League as it stands. They had looked second best up to the goal - but they never looked troubled. A well-drilled, well-oiled side.

That goal started with Radamel Falcao losing the ball to John Terry on the halfway line. Not for the first time this season Falcao has looked like a fish out of water. Moments later he tangles with Terry again. He's clearly frustrated.

  67. GOAL

Chelsea 1-0 Man Utd - Eden Hazard

    Hazard

How composed can you be? Eden Hazard - for my money the best player in the Premier League this season - strokes the leaders ahead with their first chance of the game.

It's a well-worked goal, Oscar back-heeling the ball into the run of Hazard cutting in from the left, he bursts into space and knows just how much time he has, waiting until the optimum moment and then shooting between the legs of David De Gea.

Not unlike Juan Mata's goal in the Manchester derby.

  68. Post update

    Chelsea 0-0 Man Utd

    DeGea

Handball? David De Gea gets in a tangle with Antonio Valencia as they scramble to clear from in front of Eden Hazard, and De Gea pushes it clear with his wrist. Right on the edge of the box, if not outside. On the line.

Nothing given and no major reaction from Chelsea.

  69. Post update

    Chelsea 0-0 Man Utd

Not much of a 'top-of-the-table' feel about this game. It's Manchester United dominating the ball but Chelsea looking rock solid. Eden Hazard has been quiet but he remains Chelsea's out ball.

  70. Post update

    Chelsea 0-0 Man Utd

BBC Sport chief football writer Phil McNulty at Stamford Bridge

    Zouma

"Manchester United, and Ander Herrera in particular, continue to impress. Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has clearly detailed Kurt Zouma as the man to nullify Marouane Fellaini's aerial ability - now United need to make this supremacy count as history tells us Chelsea's resilience will see them have a spell of control before too long."

It's been a while since I saw a man wear a baseball cap backwards but the injured Diego Costa styles it out in the stands, just along from Andriy Shevchenko. He's done well to get a ticket. Must have banked some good loyalty points with a cup trip to Shrewsbury.

Tom, London: Re: Jamie at 17.07 Three centre-backs on the pitch is exactly why Chelsea deserve to win the League. It's not pretty but Jose Mourinho is the ultimate realist when it comes to the big games and it works. Just look at his record v Wenger or Fergie. Radamel Falcao just can't get into the game. Or the season. He's a spare part. A very expensive luxury of a spare part. A luxury who will be a free agent in the summer - you'd wager.

    Where may he end up?

  78. Post update

    Chelsea 0-0 Man Utd

Should Didier Drogba have come back to Chelsea? He's a shadow of his former self and with every game he may run the risk of erasing some of the magic memories of his first, trophy-laden spell. He does well to shed Chris Smalling of possession but then he is too slow to be able to to pick up the loose ball and loses out.

Mind you, he's likely to win another title this year so maybe it was the right call after all.

  79. Post update

    Chelsea 0-0 Man Utd

    Drogba

"Manchester United have started very brightly and Ander Herrera is the man at the centre of everything. He has been one of the shining lights of United's recent good run."

He should have scored, probably, but Wayne Rooney growing in influence, zinging passes wide from midfield and then moving into the box late on. Antonio Valencia is quick to strip the ball from Eden Hazard. United on the front foot in the early stages.

  85. CLOSE!

    Chelsea 0-0 Man Utd

What an effort! The away fans thought this was in, and I did for a moment too. Luke Shaw gets clear down the left for Manchester United and picks out Wayne Rooney, who bends in a left-footer from 18 yards.

It hits the stanchion behind the goal and bounces across the back of the net. It looks very much like a goal. So much so that at the other end David De Gea turns his back to play and celebrates with the fans...

    Chelsea 0-0 Man Utd

Manchester United have won their last six league games but it's Chelsea who start well, putting United under pressure early on. Cesc Fabregas is playing higher up the pitch with Kurt Zouma alongside Nemanja Matic in the engine room. Wayne Rooney in front of his own back four.

Michael Carrick has been getting huge levels of praise for the difference he has made to Manchester United this season. Will we see a difference without him? Here we go...

Collegehilltutor: (United fan here) I wear size nines. If Falcao scores today I will eat my shoe.

Yinka: Makes me nervous to know we are up against Fabregas who has 17 assists with no defensive mid.

Jay Hogaro: Changes could prove costly for Manchester United. Would have been great to see the side that have been doing so well have a go.

Sammiiee!!: Still no Remy, I don't mind Solanke today, just won the UEFA youth cup, probably brimming with confidence.

The teams are out in the Stamford Bridge tunnel.

'Come on, come on, come on!' shouts Jose Mourinho as he walks past his team, while England captains past and present John Terry and Wayne Rooney shake hands. 'All the best' says JT. Insincerely.

  91. De Gea away?

Chelsea v Man Utd (17:30 BST)

BBC Sport chief football writer Phil McNulty at Stamford Bridge

"Yet more speculation surrounding Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea today, with fresh links to Real Madrid. The vastly experienced Victor Valdes is his understudy and if the former Barcelona keeper's form in the warm-up here is anything to go by he has still got it. He has pulled off a string of magnificent saves, especially one high to his left from Ashley Young. It may only be the warm-up but he looks like a man who means business."

  92. Title is Chelsea's to lose

Chelsea v Man Utd (17:30 BST)

    Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown

    Football Focus

"Last week's goal at QPR was a big goal. Chelsea are a bit bare at the top of the team, with Diego Costa injured they need Loic Remy back and Didier Drogba is nowhere near the player he once was.

"There are so many points ahead, they need to be professional now and it is theirs to lose."

  94. 'Chelsea will be happy with a draw'

Chelsea v Man Utd (17:30 BST)

    BBC Sport pundit Robbie Savage

"Chelsea will be champions if they win their next three games but I think they will be happy just to avoid defeat against Manchester United on Saturday.

    Jose Mourinho

"United's confidence is sky-high after their run of six straight wins and their performances have been as impressive as their results.

"We have seen a more settled United line-up in the last few weeks and they are benefiting at both ends of the pitch. They have clicked up front, and they have also been much improved at the back."

Eyobel gomini: Falcao set to bang a brace and save his United career!

Martins: Fellaini won the battle against Toure, let's see against Zouma.

Matt Harding: Was far more confident last week about facing Chelsea than this week. Carrick a huge miss. Time for Falcao to find some form?

It's almost time for the player of the year awards - and tonight's game sees both goalkeepers in the running for awards alongside Eden Hazard and Diego Costa of Chelsea.

But who gets your nod for signing of the year in the Premier League? Cesc Fabregas? Alexis Sanchez?

    George Boyd? Toby Alderweireld?

"For Manchester United it will be a good test against Chelsea to see how far they have come. I did not think they would finish in the top four but they have really impressed me. They kept plugging away and got the results and have turned a corner. Fellaini has become a top player for them. It will be an interesting game, all the pressure will be on Chelsea. They can not rest on their laurels."

Chelsea XI: Courtois, Ivanovic, Cahill, Terry (c), Azpilicueta, Zouma, Matic, Oscar, Fabregas, Hazard, Drogba.

  100. 'Carrick injury a blow for Arsenal'

Chelsea v Man Utd (17:30 BST)

    Former England midfielder Danny Murphy

    Football Focus

"Manchester United will do well to get a result at Stamford Bridge today, with all the players they have out injured. Michael Carrick is the main man out, it's a huge blow for them. And for Arsenal too because I think that swings the title firmly into Chelsea's path."

Jamie, Lincoln: Three centre-backs on the field. This is why Chelsea don't deserve the league. Utterly boring.

Kurt Zouma v Wayne Rooney in midfield then - a key battleground. Or will Zouma go man-to-man on unlikely United hero Marouane Fellaini?

  103. Team News

BBC Sport chief football writer Phil McNulty at Stamford Bridge

"Radamel Falcao has never been able to seriously impress since making his loan move to Manchester United - but he gets a big opportunity here at Chelsea today in a Manchester United side struck by injuries. It is likely to mean Wayne Rooney dropping into midfield, so what a chance for the Colombian to make the impact he has craved since arriving from Monaco.

"Still no Diego Costa or Loic Remy for Chelsea so manager Jose Mourinho will hope Didier Drogba can roll back the years against opponents he has tormented before."

  104. 'Nick a goal'

Chelsea v Man Utd (17:30 BST)

    Kevin Kilbane

    BBC Radio 5 live

"The way the Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho goes about these bigger games is that he would take a 0-0 draw. If he can nick a goal then he will sit on it. I can't see him playing open expansive football in this match."

Chelsea v Man Utd (17:30 BST)

If Chelsea are (slightly) stuttering toward the end of the season, Manchester United are just getting going,.

Only Arsenal have taken more points in the Premier League in 2015 and Louis van Gaal's side smashed rivals City last weekend.

    Wayne Rooney

A win at Stamford Bridge today would see United move to within five points of the leaders.

An unlikely late title challenge from Old Trafford?

  106. Will the champions elect please stand up?

Chelsea v Man Utd (17:30 BST)

Chelsea have been top of the Premier League since 18 August.

    Premier League table

They have looked like champions from the moment Andre Schurrle scored a majestic team goal on the opening weekend of the season. Diego Costa settled into the top flight like a dream, Cesc Fabregas reminded everyone just how good he was, Eden Hazard was a one-man wrecking ball and Thibaut Courtois formed a human wall in nets.

They were in a league of their own.

They still are to be honest - seven points clear of the chasing pack - but has the mask just started to slip?

Three unconvincing wins in a row against Hull, Stoke and QPR have posed a few questions - and now Manchester United are in town.

    Louis Van Gaal

Can United pick up another big win to shake up the tail-end of the season?

Chelsea v Man Utd (17:30 BST)

BBC Sport chief football writer Phil McNulty at Stamford Bridge

"West London is bathed in glorious sunshine and thousands of fans are already milling around outside Stamford Bridge ahead of Premier League leaders' Chelsea's meeting with Manchester United.

"Jose Mourinho may be the master now as Chelsea hold a seven-point advantage over Arsenal at the top of the table with a game in hand but his one-time mentor at Barcelona Louis van Gaal may just think the door to the title has been pushed slightly ajar if United can win here and reduce the gap on Chelsea to five points."
