Former Newcastle captain Alan Shearer on 5 live

"I don't think anyone could say Newcastle didn't deserve the result today. There was a great atmosphere, the players showed they wanted to stay in the Premier League and the fans backed them. I'm delighted they will be playing top flight football next season.

"Jonas Gutierrez scoring at the end is a fantastic story. If there is one guy who really works his socks off it's Jonas, and he was doing it in my time at the club too. After all he has been through I know how much that goal will mean to him today. He has shown incredible commitment to the club.

"Now if they stop selling their best players, bring in a few new faces and play the best team in cup competitions, you never know, we might just have a very good club on our hands."

"I think John Carver was woefully out of his depth. The atmosphere was incredible today and the fans got behind the side.

"Mike Ashley, by letting Alan Pardew go, put Newcastle in this position. Carver should stay with the club because he is a Newcastle man through and through but they need somebody else at the helm who can do more."

  4. 'Time for De Gea to say something'published at 17:26 British Summer Time 24 May 2015

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal on David De Gea's future: "I cannot say that. He has to say something not I."

On Falcao: "Also we have tomorrow still a day. Maybe. I have to say something to him."

On the summer: "For me, that is why I am the manager. You have to decide which players are to go and which have to come. That is a process. It is not so easy. It is waiting for clubs to agree or not. It is hard work, but more for [Chief Exec] Ed Woodward than me. I go on holiday but I will always be in contact."

  5. Postpublished at 17:24 British Summer Time 24 May 2015

    Everton

Everton boss Roberto Martinez: "Of course it's been a very tough season but we have learned invaluable lessons that we will use in a good effect to start building towards where we want to be again."

  6. Counting the costpublished at 17:23 British Summer Time 24 May 2015

    Hull City

Even with parachute payments of £25million in the first season, relegated clubs will face a drop of around £50million in turnover.

Hull's income in the Championship in 2012-13 was £11.1million, and £84.5million in the Premier League in 2013-14. Wowsers.

  7. Postpublished at 17:22 British Summer Time 24 May 2015

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal praises Victor Valdes for his shot-stopping but admits he was not great under the high ball.

He also says that David De Gea 'now has to say something' about his future and refuses to confirm anything about Radamel Falcao's future.

  8. 'I still want this job'published at 17:20 British Summer Time 24 May 2015

    Newcastle United

Newcastle manager John Carver: "I told the players it was going to be a 90-minute rollercoaster and I thought we controlled our emotions quite well. We knew what was happening at Hull but we had to go about our own business, credit to Sam Allardyce for putting out a strong side, there were no gimmes and it was a good performance.

"The whole season has been difficult, when we went to New Zealand we lost the two lads (in the Malaysia Air crash in Ukraine), and that was a tragedy. I think they were looking down on us today. There have been some tough times but I'm stronger for it. I knew when I looked in the players' eyes they were ready for this. Every player deserves credit. We have not had a good season but I am going to enjoy this moment.

"I still want this job, I love this club but I know this is a big summer. We have to invest , Mike has said that and that is encouraging. I want a summer where I can bring in the players I want. Today has given me more enthusiasm to do what I want to do."

  9. Postpublished at 17:18 British Summer Time 24 May 2015

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal says it 'was a special atmosphere' at Hull today and he thinks the players found it hard to play.

    Full reaction to come.

Robert: That result will cost Liverpool £1m in lost prize money alone. Gutted for Gerrard. A disgraceful display.

Ash Williams: After the thrashing today why are people calling for Gerrard to be in charge? He's signed to move to LA. Let it go!

Aidan Mifsud: Don't understand how Allam gets the blame. He gave Steve Bruce money to spend. Team didn't perform.

"I wouldn't say they've been incredible and I wouldn't say magnificent either, but Chelsea won it.

"Jose Mourinho is the master of taking pressure off his team, but champions or not there have been deficiencies. They've only lost three games, but Arsenal, Manchester City or Manchester United would not have won the championship in this style. Mourinho has been the pragmatist, he changed their approach, and you have to say they are worthy champions. But the only point I'm making is that not everybody likes it."

  12. Postpublished at 17:16 British Summer Time 24 May 2015

Newcastle fan Jamie Smith: "An absolute fairytale ending as Jonas Gutierrez, comfortably man of the match, seals his already assured place in the affections of Newcastle fans with the goal that seals our Premier League status.

"Still, sealing 15th place and survival on the final day is no cause for celebration. I'm still in the ground for the sit in protest half an hour after the game, with disillusionment from the season gone being rightly aimed at the owner.

"Relief, but there's a long road ahead."

Jose Mourinho waggles eight fingers to the cameras - a reference to the number of trophies he has won at the club if you exclude the 2005 Community Shield - before plucking the golden crown off the top of the trophy and coronating Didier Drogba with it.

Drogba laps it all up, filming himself with his new headwear, before jumping up to lead the cheers again.

  15. 'There wasn't a contract talked about'published at 17:15 British Summer Time 24 May 2015

    West Ham

Former West Ham boss Sam Allardyce:

"There was not a contract talked about, but it is probably right for both of us to move on. I've enjoyed this opportunity, it's been a great venture. I take great pride in what I have achieved. The team, the club is in a hugely more successful position than when I took over. Everything I was asked to do I've delivered. It's probably the right time for us both to move on, I really enjoyed the ride.

"I think it is time for me to go, they said I was not going to get a new contract, but we just said 'that's it', and I'm off. The relationship was mostly with David Sullivan on the football side of things, and I thanked him. I enjoyed it, four years is a long time in this game, and it is time for us to move on.

"When you get the chance for a break you don't jump out of the of the frying pan into the fire. The club is in a fantastic position and I really enjoyed taking it there."

Noumaan Abubakar: Credit to Nigel Pearson for orchestrating the greatest escape in the premier league, He was allegedly sacked at one point of this season.

Jonathan Whitehead: 29 goals scored today in the PL. Crystal Palace finish 10th after Chamakh's winner. Stunning. Unbelievable. We're in dreamland!

    Michael Bench-Capon: Allardyce to Liverpool?

That is an interesting shout Michael, too soon?

  17. 'We want to challenge for the title again'published at 17:12 British Summer Time 24 May 2015

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger: "Theo Walcott had a great game today. He was on fire and moved well. Jack Wilshere as well.

"I had no pre-set mind before the game regarding the FA Cup final team. I have not thought about next Saturday. I wanted to pick a team to win the game.

"We had a slow start to the season, but progressively, we got stronger, and from January onwards we got competitive.

"We have qualified directly for next season's Champions League. But we want more. We want to challenge for the Premier League title. But first we want to win the FA Cup next weekend.

"The first thing we need is to get everybody back in pre-season and not lose so many players. Walcott was out for a year, Wilshere for six months."

The last two men up for Chelsea are Didier Drogba - who is filming the whole thing on his phone and orchestrating the chants - and John Terry - who is a lot more low-key almost sheepish as he is invited to hoist the trophy.

You know the rest. Blue and white ticker tape, chants of Championes, a team shot in front of a sponsors board.

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino: "It was a really, really good day. The first half was fantastic, one of the best of the season. The effort was brilliant, I want to congratulate the players because it was a tough season and arriving fifth was very good for us. For a first season at Tottenham, it was difficult but I'm very happy."
