A drop down into the Championship from the Premier League is estimated to cost relegated clubs between £40m and £50m in lost revenue.

And with the Premier League's bumper new television rights deal coming in in 2016-17, anything less than an immediate return will be very, very costly.

Those are the financial sums. What about the table mathematics?

In September Hull broke their transfer record for a second time in a matter of months, bringing in Abel Hernandez for £10m, hot on the heels of the £8m permanent deal for Jake Livermore.

Steve Bruce said that the signings showed "just how far the club has come in such a short space of time".

In November, Newcastle - who had just dumped Manchester City out of the League Cup - won a fifth successive Premier League game as they beat QPR to move into the top five.

A grinning Alan Pardew hailed it as a "terrific performance" that gave them hope they could push even further up the table.

Come May and both are staring down the relegation barrel.
