Elsewhere Sevilla are 2-0 up against Malaga and heading for that fourth Champions League spot ahead of Valencia, who are drawing 2-2 at Almeria.

Anyone going to produce Xavi T-shirts akin to 'No Pirlo, no party'? The midfielder insisted this week that Barcelona would continue to be successful without him. Humble to the last.

No real tempo to the game now. Most of the crowd seem like they wish the game would finish so they can get on with the Xavi party.

Max Baggins-Craig: Xavi's efforts have being outstanding, he's helped create another great (i.e. Messi), along with Iniesta's brilliance. Both players have passed on their skills.

Worth reminding you that Deportivo have spent the last four seasons sharing their time between La Liga and the Segunda division. Relegated four seasons ago, they returned as champions. They were then demoted again before finishing runners-up in the second tier last season.

Warning: Xavi just mis-controlled the ball and lost it. Do not adjust your mobiles! But about 20 seconds later he has it back and pings a lofted pass to Rafinha on the right wing. Normal service has resumed.

Deportivo get us back under way. No changes to either side.

Apologies for the liberal use of Xavi photos and the incredible tribute paid by the Barcelona fans before kick off. But when you've won eight La Liga titles, three Champions Leagues, two European Championships and a World Cup by putting oppositions defences in a spin your whole career, I reckon it's wroth making the most of his last few hours on a top-level football pitch.

Worth saying that Valencia got a goal back to leave it 2-2 with relegation-threatened Almeria. That means Deportivo are a point behind fourth-bottom Granada, who are safe as it stands and drawing 0-0 with Atletico Madrid.

Kolade Ibrahim: Xavi epitomised the best Barca and Spain sides of all time. The best passer I've ever seen and surely among the top five midfield greats.

Nishes Upadhyay: Xavi has achieved everything in his carrier. He is the best midfielder I have seen.

Mark Richmond: Xavi is going to play in Qatar after this. Even from there he'll be able to find a Barcelona jersey with a pass.

The referee blows for half-time. Pretty straight forward for Barcelona so far and Deportivo look outclassed at times but it's only 1-0 so there's still a chance. Lionel Messi's 55th goal of the season is the difference.

Deportivo make a rare advance into the Barcelona half, as Lucas Perez crosses from the right byline but Sidnei cannot poke his shot goalwards. Their best effort so far, though.

Approaching half-time, we have three minutes of stoppage time. Barcelona being patient as Deportivo line the edge of the penalty area like a brick wall.

  15. CLOSE!published at 18:14 British Summer Time 23 May 2015

Xavi almost on the scoresheet in his farewell game. He marches to the edge of the box and fires goalwards but it takes a deflection for a corner. Fabricio looked like he was rocking on his heels there.

Krishna Kumar: Xavi has achieved everything that a midfielder could dream of. Massive Legend of the game.

Meanwhile, Almeria have taken a 2-1 lead over Valencia. All the relegation-threatened clubs are moving upwards, except Deportivo. Roberto Canella is replaced by Bosnia & Hercegovina international midfielder Haris Medunjanin.

Roberto Canella is down injured and receiving treatment for a nasty fall on his shoulder after an aerial challenge. Looks like the Deportivo defender might be going off.

    Italian Serie A

As you might have heard in the past few days Napoli boss Rafael Benitez has emerged as the leading candidate to become the next Real Madrid manager. He still has a couple of games of the season left with Napoli, who are chasing a Champions League place in Serie A and it's not quite going to plan for Rafa in Turin. His side trail 1-0 to a goal from Juve's Roberto Pereyra at the half-time break.

Eibar are now 3-0 up against Cordoba. Difficult to see that one changing direction.
