  2. Post update

    Man Utd 1-0 Tottenham

Quote Message: We’ve seen two pressing teams. We couldn’t cope with their pressing, and Tottenham couldn’t cope with ours. I’m very happy that we’ve won in the end. I had expected better from us. Tottenham were pressing and we didn’t have the time to pass. We have to improve on that. I said to Memphis Depay that he doesn’t have to play too eagerly and with too much passion, and that counts for the whole team. But it is always – the first time you play at Old Trafford it s always difficult, but I liked the performance especially from Matteo Darmian. I am not the most important part with David De Gea. The most important part is the player and the club who wants to buy him. He’s our best layer for the past 2 or 3 years so we cannot let him go so easily. We want to sell at the same level as we pay. We want to keep him of course. from Louis van Gaal Manchester United manager

    Man Utd 1-0 Tottenham

Quote Message: We’re very frustrated and disappointed because until the goal, we played much better than them, we created some chances and dominated the game. After we conceded the goal it was difficult to play to the same level. I think we played very well. It’s true that when you compete against a team like Manchester United you need to avoid mistakes. And there were two or three big, big mistakes today. On the whole we need to be happy though. from Mauricio Pochettino Tottenham manager

    Louis van Gaal

I don't think United can win the Premier League. They have made some good signings, but I look at the defence and the problems they are having with David De Gea and they just lack the solidity required.

Last season was a free bite of the cherry for Louis van Gaal, but this is his team now. There are no more excuses and he cannot afford to go through the season without silverware.

    Chris Bevan

    BBC Sport at Old Trafford

The United fans were desperate for the referee to blow his full-time whistle, which says a lot about the nature of their side's win.

The home supporters in front of me were on their feet when Wayne Rooney broke forward in stoppage time but that was the only time their backsides left their seats for footballing reasons in the second half. The other occasions were to either welcome on or applaud off one of their new signings.

Tottenham's fans were still noisily saluting their team long after the final whistle. They, and everyone else inside Old Trafford, knows their team did not deserve to leave empty-handed.

    BBC Sport at Old Trafford

The Spurs fans are trying to rouse their weary players but it looks like Tottenham have got very little left in the tank - it is very hot out there too, remember. Manchester United are not exactly putting the miles in either, but they have the lead so they don't have to. Playing keep-ball is enough and that is what they are trying to do at the moment.

  48. Post update

Manager Louis van Gaal, sans blazer, takes a swig of water. It's a hot day at Old Trafford today.

  116. 'We are ready'

Man Utd v Tottenham (12:45 BST)

Quote Message: "We are focusing on today, our preparation was very good. We are ready to compete. Michel Vorm is playing in goal for common sense. Hugo Lloris only played last 30 minutes against Milan and he's not fit to play 90 minutes [after a wrist injury]. Danny Rose is out. In the last training session he suffered an injury in his quadricep, it's not a big issue but it was impossible for him to play today." from Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino on whether preparations have gone well after playing pre-seasons game this week:

Each of Manchester United's four debutants today got a huge cheer when their names were read out over the tannoy at Old Trafford just now and it is clear that their manager believes their arrival means his side are in better shape than on the opening day of last season, when not a single one of his signings started.

"I firmly believe in the refreshment of teams," Louis van Gaal writes in his programme notes for today's game. "You need that to keep the spirit in the team and also challenge the line-up. When I arrived at Old Trafford it was not like that but now we have all the positions double-occupied and we have better balance in the team."

  119. 'A difficult decision'

Quote Message: “In these circumstances, this is the best decision. "It is a very difficult decision because Sam Johnstone did very well in pre-season but with Sergio’s experience this is the best decision. I have a very good feeling about this season.” from Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal Speaking to BT Sport about picking Sergio Romero in goal today

  122. Is Kane still able?

Man Utd v Tottenham (12:45 BST)

    Harry Kane

Spurs striker Harry Kane was one of the standout performers of last season, smashing in 21 league goals as his side finished fifth in the league.

They've been relatively quiet in the transfer market this summer, defender Toby Alderweireld coming in for £12m their biggest outlay.

Have they got enough in their squad to get back into the top four? Kane's goal will go a long way to determining whether they are able to or not.

  124. De Gea situation 'a huge gamble'

Man United v Tottenham (12:45 BST)

    Alan Shearer

    BBC Sport

It is a huge gamble for Manchester United to have let the David De Gea issue rumble on as long as it has.

If he wants to go to Real Madrid, he will get there, whether it is this summer, in the transfer window or when his contract expires at the end of the season.

Even Manchester United cannot afford to let his contract run down. The owners will not be happy to let him leave for free and miss out on £30m. It just doesn't make business sense.

  125. David De Gonner?

Man Utd v Tottenham (12:45 BST)

    DDG

He was the club's Player of the Year last term but goalkeeper David De Gea looks like he is on his way out. Speculation is rife about a return to his homeland, with Real Madrid awaiting his arrival.

The Spaniard's is "not the same" according to manager Louis van Gaal, who has dropped him for the opener.

"De Gea tries and does his utmost best, but it's a difficult situation," said the Dutchman.

"Now we have to play our first match and I want players who can focus only on the match and he is not capable to do that. He shall not play."

Argentine Sergio Romero makes his debut for the Red Devils.

Shorts, sunglasses and selfies are the order of the day in the bright sunshine outside Old Trafford, but the summer vibe does not seem to be translating into over-confidence for Manchester United fans on the opening day of the season.

James Whitty (pictured left) said: "We will definitely be better than last season but I still think we are short of one or two players."

Dan Moore (right) added: "We need a striker and a centre-half. At the moment we are looking at second or third, not winning the title."

  128. Team news

Man Utd v Tottenham (12:45 BST)

Manchester United give debuts to four new signings as goalkeeper Sergio Romero, full-back Matteo Darmian and midfielders Morgan Schneiderlin and Memphis Depay all start. Captain Wayne Rooney leads the line. Bastian Schweinsteiger only makes the bench.

Tottenham goalkeeper Michel Vorm starts, despite Hugo Lloris playing in mid-week after recovering from a wrist injury. Defender Toby Alderweireld – bought from Atletico Madrid this summer – makes his debut in the heart of defence. Star man Harry Kane is up top.
