The sky is the limit for John Stones. He's got the full package. He's strong, good on the ball and he's a good kid. In the dressing room we love him. We support him 100% and he's been smiling all week.

Harry Kane finally hammers the ball into the net but it is more out of frustration that conviction as the linesman's flag was raised for offside.

Seconds earlier, Everton thought they should have had a penalty after Steven Naismith went down after being tugged by Kyle Walker. It would have been harsh.

"I've just looked over at the Everton bench and my eyes focussed on one person - Duncan Ferguson. He's part of the coaching staff. I bet he'd been dreaming of a chance like that. In the end it just skimmed off the top of Arouna Kone's head.

"The tempo's just slowed fraction and I'm not surprised. Over the last 15 minutes it's been played at some pace."

A rare Everton attack and that is so close. Bryan Oviedo whips in a delicious cross from the right, Arouna Kone meets the ball first, but his glanced header is inches wide of the far post.

Beware Tottenham, Everton can still be a threat...

Tottenham immediately on the attack as central defender Jan Vertonghen beats three Everton defenders before having a wicked shot tipped over by Tim Howard.

Everton are under the cosh. Dele Alli goes down in the penalty area  after another Tottenham attack but nothing doing.

"How Tottenham are not in front is beyond me. Two chances in swift succession that Spurs fail to take because Harry Kane and Nacer Chadli both opted for placement.

"Everton are hanging on at the moment."

Still their shooting boots remain firmly off. Harry Kane has a shot blocked by Phil Jagielka, the rebound falls to Nacer Chadli who fires over with the goal at his mercy. Tottenham are being very wasteful.

Mauricio Pochettino is looking a worried man. His Spurs side are well on top but they need to be more clinical.

They have had 14 shots so far today but only on six on target.

This is getting very, very scrappy. Eric Dier is rightly booked for a late lunge on Ross Barkley.

Everton boss Roberto Martinez looks as though he thinks Dier has been booked before... Referee Mike Jones runs over to the touchline to show him his note pad to prove he hasn't.

Nabil Bentaleb gives the ball away cheaply to Arouna Kone and he is cautioned for tugging him back.

Before the free-kick can be taken Romelu Lukaku and Eric Dier have to be prised apart inside the penalty area. Handbags at 10 paces.

Dele Alli again. Now, he has a chance to fire the hosts ahead after another poor touch from Gareth Barry but he scuffs his shot horribly from close range.

"That's a great chance. Dele Alli did brilliantly, Ryan Mason pushed forward but it was a weak finish in the end.

"Mason keeps getting in those positions though. He looks like the most likely player to score here."

A busy start for Dele Alli, who was signed from MK Dons in January - but loaned back until the summer. Now he is booked for getting in the way of Gareth Barry's free-kick.

Dele Alli almost makes an instant impression. He latches onto a poor touch from Gareth Barry to prod Ryan Mason through on goal but, from close range, his low shot is kept out by Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard. Again.

The hosts are now well on top. Mousa Dembele works his way to the bye-line on the left but his ball back into the penalty area just evades Harry Kane.

As Dembele stays down in pain, clutching his ankle, the game goes on and Nacer Chadli scuffs a shot well wide. Looks ominous for Dembele - he has hardly moved.

The word from the Everton dressing room, according to BBC Sport's Jonathan Pearce, is that Tom Cleverley's ankle injury is serious.

Tottenham yet to have an attack as Everton settle in much the better of the two sides. Not much happening, mind.

Bright start from Everton as Tom Cleverley and Romelu Lukaku link up inside Tottenham's penalty area but the latter is crowded out. 

Tottenham hope home advantage will prove key at White Hart Lane. It hasn't proved the case in the Premier League so far this campaign...

Manchester City are the only home winners in the top flight so far today, while there have only been seven home wins out of 37 in the league this campaign.

Chelsea's 2-1 defeat to Crystal Palace only raises the suspicions that the Blues might move again for John Stones before the close of the transfer window on Tuesday.

Is the Everton man in the right frame of mind to play today, despite wanting to leave? We will find out.
