So Celtic will have to wait until next season at least to have another go at the Champions League...though Aberdeen or Inverness or Hearts or (insert team name here) might have something to say about that. Thank you very much indeed for joining us here on the BBC Sport website, whether you're on your PC, mobile or tablet. Enjoy the rest of your evening.

    Celtic manager Ronny Deila

"The set plays were very disappointing. It is very rare that we concede two goals from set plays. I think if we played our best we had a good chance to go through. We don't have to sell Virgil van Dijk, but you never know in football. He is a very good football player that we want to keep."

    Celtic manager Ronny Deila

"The hype about the Champions League is a big thing. Everybody wants it so badly. You have to deal with it but we looked very stressed. We didn't look like we wanted to go out and play football. We have a lot of young players coming through but this was a hard lesson for us. The disallowed goal was a big mistake. It could have changed the game, it is very disappointing. There are a lot of disappointed coaches and players in there. We have to get back on track again. We have shown that (the Europa League) is the level we are at. Stefan Johansen is 23, he has never played in the Champions League. Seven of the players have never been in the Champions League before."

    Celtic manager Ronny Deila

"We looked very uncomfortable on the ball. We looked frightened and scared and that is very disappointing. It was a team performance that is not at the level we should expect at these games. We lose and win together. This is my responsibility. We have to learn from this, some very hard learning. We knew if we were at our best we could go through but we were not even close. We felt and saw that we did not deal with the pressure. We didn't cope with the pressure. The overall team performance was not good enough."

    Former Celtic goalkeeper Pat Bonner

"Celtic were not effective tonight. They did not perform. They let the crowd get to them. They lost three goals to set pieces - corners - over the two legs so they need to look carefully at that. They had enough height in that team to deal with anything. Celtic threw it away over the two legs. They put pressure on themselves."

A bit like losing contestants being shown what they could have won in a game show, the riches on offer to those teams entering the Champions League group stage were detailed by BBC Scotland reporter Alasdair Lamont earlier today. Al estimates Celtic will make about £8m in the Europa League, some way short of the £21m or so they would have earned in Uefa's top club tournament.

Anonymous: "Been following Celtic for over 50 years, don't agree with statements from Celtic management that we belong in the Champions League. The state of Scottish football at present no Scottish team belongs in the Champions league."

John, Irvine: "What's this zonal marking all about? Could you pick a Celtic man of the match?"

Jim, Edinburgh: "We need to face facts. Scottish football as a whole operation is very lowly rated. Our media are kind and 'big it up' for punters but really, it is no better than England's lowest main league. Yes, that bad. Strategically we are no match at the sport. We don't even know how to play referees. Our football is bad. Our champs have just been given a lesson on many aspects of the new game that is football by a mid table also poor footballing country. Sad demise."

The goals have been flowing for Leigh Griffiths, including two in the home leg against Malmo. But he and the rest of his Celtic team-mates were below par against determined opposition this evening.

    BBC Scotland's Tom English

"They put themselves into a winning position, 2-0 at Celtic Park, and they blew it. There are no excuses. I didn't see character out there from Scott Brown. I'd love to see the stats on mis-placed passes by Stefan Johansen. I didn't see any leaders. I saw Celtic bubbling at Celtic Park but then they had the mishap."

BBC Scotland's Tom English in Malmo

"I think Celtic were out-fought and out-thought. It might sound crazy to say it but I think Malmo wanted it more than Celtic. Malmo had an almost frenzied desire to get the ball back when they gave it away. Of course we can talk about the Bitton goal that should have been but wasn't, but Celtic got what they deserved. Celtic should have been good enough to see out that first leg but they were undone by their own inadequacies. They are out and it's a very, very disappointing night for this club."
