    Everton 0-1 Liverpool

Ross Barkley was guilty of really poor marking for a goal by West Brom on Monday and he was the man in the wrong again there. He let Danny Ings run off him far, far too easily.

    Danny Ings (42 mins)

All is forgiven for Danny Ings as the striker caps a week which saw him earn a first England call-up with a derby day goal. It's ridiculous defending from Everton though, as they leave Ings unmarked to head in a corner from maybe three yards out.

He could not miss. He didn't.

    Awareness! Nope.

Danny Ings is played in on goal, he has Daniel Sturridge to his right and has to square it - has to! But he doesn't. It's really poor. Sturridge is fuming.

    Everton 0-0 Liverpool

Everton have had a good spell but Liverpool seem to have more of a threat up front. Philippe Coutinho dances into the penalty area and flashes in a low cross but that man Phil Jagielka is well stationed again to clear away. He's defended brilliantly thus far,

Emre Can is causing more trouble in the Everton penalty area! He goes for an overhead kick and connects with Gareth Barry's head as the former England man clears it away.

A huge roar from the Everton fans, baying for blood and a second yellow card. A foul is given, but no more,

  7. YELLOW CARDpublished at 35 mins

    Everton 0-0 Liverpool

Referee Martin Atkinson takes charge of the situation and books both Emre Can and Ross Barkley. Is that the start of a bit of needle?

It's kicked off! Emre Can refuses to give the ball in his hands to Ross Barkley, Barkley takes umbrage at that and seconds later there's a 10-man scuffle. Scrummage.

Liverpool keeper Simon Mignolet can be criticised for kicking and a lack of authority in his area - but he can produce some stunning stops, as he has just proved with those saves from Steven Naismith and James McCarthy.

    Everton 0-0 Liverpool

Former Everton winger Ronnie Goodlass on BBC Radio Merseyside: "If he looks back on it, Steven Naismith will feel a yard either side and his header would have been a goal but let's give credit to the keeper as it was an excellent save. The second save by Simon Mignolet is even better."

Lee Shore: Sunderland not hurrying into making any appointments yet, well not until the Merseyside derby is over, see how Brendan gets on.

Shohidur Rahman: Naismith should've scored, it was a free header.

Serge Tchwenko: That should have been a goal for Naismith. Headed straight at Mignolet.

  12. GREAT SAVE!published at 29 mins

    Everton 0-0 Liverpool

Great save again! Everton have really dialled it up and and James McCarthy cracks in a stinging shot from 20 yards which Simon Mignolet keeps out, one-handed again.

The build-up was the best football of the day. Romelu Lukaku involved, Steven Naismith and Ross Barkley all having a pass too.

  13. GREAT SAVE!published at 27 mins

    Everton 0-0 Liverpool

Rubbish defending! But a great save! Ross Barkley whips in an Everton free-kick, to the heart of the penalty area, and Steven Naismith is completely unmarked. Just head it in - but he allows Simon Mignolet to make a one-handed stop.

Fine save, but he should be burying that...

Liverpool still looking likely. A neat move on the fringe of the area ends with captain James Milner running on to a clip over the top and hitting the side-netting from a very tight angle. Everton are yet to get going.

"Referee Martin Atkinson is not a popular figure at Goodison Park going back as far as October 2011 when he controversially sent off then Everton midfielder Jack Rodwell following a clash with Liverpool's Luis Suarez - a decision later overturned.

"He is already attracting the ire of Everton fans with what the home support feel are some generous decisions in Liverpool's favour. It wouldn't be a Merseyside derby without a few whinges about the officials would it?"
