    Mark Lawrenson
Former Liverpool defender on Football Focus

"If you ask Evertonians from the the 1960s they will tell you Howard Kendall was part of the best Everton midfield of all time, with Alan Ball and Colin Harvey.

"He used to play for Preston too, and he was my idol growing up, but that Everton team of the mid 1980s - his team - were outstanding. If English clubs hadn't been banned from playing in Europe because of the Heysel disaster, they could have won the European Cup.

"He was a good man, a social man, a real football man. And he will be very sorely missed. It's come as a real shock."

    Phil McNulty

"Goodison Park will be awash with emotion ahead of Everton's meeting with Manchester United today following the death of Howard Kendall. It was only in 2007 that Kendall and his great Everton friend and colleague Colin Harvey laid flowers before the first game after the death of their partner in the magnificent title-winning 'Holy Trinity' midfield Alan Ball. Also prior to a game with Manchester United at Goodison Park."

    Danny Murphy
Ex-Liverpool midfielder at White Hart Lane for 5 live Sport

"I have seen three or four Tottenham players joking about how tough their pre-season was. That's because Pochettino likes to play high-tempo football, and so does Klopp. But the difference is Liverpool haven't got the right type of players. Give it a year and they might do."

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

"Howard Kendall’s greatness stretched across Everton’s generations – as part of the midfield 'Holy Trinity' with Alan Ball and Colin Harvey in the 1969-70 title-winning side to his status as the club’s most successful manager.

"Kendall presided over a remarkable transformation in Everton’s fortunes, taking a club on its knees at the end of 1983 to the finest in Europe only 18 months later after winning the FA Cup in 1984 to the title and European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1985.

"He was admired by both Everton and Liverpool fans alike as a man who lived life to the full and the emotions on show at Goodison Park today will be testimony to his stature."

  15. Howard Kendall diespublished at 12:04

Everton appointed Howard Kendall after finishing 15th in the First Division in the 1980-81 season. Kendall had started his coaching career with Blackburn, and in his first season with the Toffees he led the side to eighth in the table. His impact was instant - and his eye for a player keen.

One of his first signings was goalkeeper Neville Southall from Bury for £150,000. The Welshman went on to become arguably the greatest stopper in the club's history.

Here it is then, Jurgen Klopp's much-anticipated first line-up as Liverpool boss, and it contains one big surprise.

We knew Danny Ings and Christian Benteke were injured, but fellow striker Daniel Sturridge also fails to make the Reds squad after pulling up in training yesterday, which is why Divock Origi leads their attack at White Hart Lane.

Adam Lallana also comes into the team for his first league start since mid-August.
