"I am going to Goodison Park today, and I tell you what - I am going to have a glass for him. And that says it all."

To fans of a certain age, Everton are a good Premier League side who more often than not finish in the upper half of the table. However, there was a period in the 1980s when they dominated English football. Howard Kendall was central to that.

Having represented the club as a player, he returned to Goodison Park in 1981 and within three years he had won the First Division title, repeating the feat in 1987, while also winning the FA Cup and European Cup-Winners' Cup in the club's most successful era.

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

"Howard Kendall was an amazing story at Everton, really. This week there was a lot of conversation about players winning easy England caps. The general consensus is that Kendall may well be the finest English player never to win a cap. His chance never came, but he was a wonderful player and a wonderful man for Everton."

"It'll been keenly felt this, at Goodison Park and by all Evertonians. He was so fondly thought of. This year, 2015, is the anniversary of them winning the Cup Winners' Cup against Rapid Vienna back in 1985. He's such a central figure to the history of Everton Football Club."

Sad news reaching us this morning that Everton legend Howard Kendall has died, at the age of 69.

The County Durham-born midfielder won the league as both a player and manager with the Toffees - making more than 200 appearances and managing the club in three separate spells.

The most successful of those managerial spells was in the eighties, when he led the blue half of Merseyside to two league titles, an FA Cup and the European Cup Winners' Cup.

    Get involved

Simon: Not football but hockey. We one had to cancel a whole match because geese had defecated on the pitch the night before. It had to be disinfected before we could use it again...

Jeff, Norwich: Lads in front of us left Carrow Road when we were 4-1 down to Middlesbrough with 10 mins to go. Final score 4-4. That was 2005 and they still get grief when they leave early now!

Darren Bent goal v LiverpoolImage source, Getty Images

As we've been discussing Liverpool and Sunderland for much of this morning, it seems apt that it is six years ago to the day that the Black Cats beat the Reds courtesy of that Darren Bent 'beachball' goal (although it was a Liverpool beachball so it should probably go down as an own goal).

Such is their desperation for a win, you'd understand it if the Sunderland fans decided to flood the West Brom goalmouth with beachballs this afternoon.

  19. Reasons you've left/missed a matchpublished at 10:53 British Summer Time 17 October 2015

What are the most ludicrous reasons you've missed or had to leave a match?

Simon, Exeter: I went to the Abbey Stadium to see Exeter v Cambridge. Did not check fixtures and did not realise it was FA Cup third round weekend and the fixture had been moved. Cambridge were actually away at Wolves and the Grecians had a week off. My friend Ian and I were the only ones there. The embarrassment...
