  1. At least it's over

The kind of game that makes you wonder why you like football. But at least we spent it together. Thanks for joining us - see you tomorrow for some Champions League action, with Arsenal v Bayern Munich the pick of that bunch.

  2. Stoke had control - Hughes

Stoke boss Mark Hughes told Sky Sports: “I was pleased with the amount of control we had of the game. It’s important as the away team to take the sting out of the game.

"Maybe if we’d taken more care with the final pass we might have capitalised on more opportunities. They never really created anything of note. We’ve restricted them and created opportunities.

"It was a good professional away performance. Sometimes you think you’ve scored too early. But we had control of the game. They never got any momentum in the game which was important. We’re on a decent run of form."

On the TV screens in the ground showing Jack Butland's tackle on Andre Ayew: "I was a little bit upset that the replay was shown in the stadium. That shouldn’t be allowed. It isn’t allowed."

  5. Monk 'not worried'

Swansea boss Garry Monk told Sky Sports: "I knew they’d come and play counter-attacking. The difficulty is not giving away that first goal. Once they got it, it was clear they were going to defend deep.

"We found it difficult to break them down. We’ve had a month of not hitting those levels. They’re very good players. I need to get them back to that level. I have big confidence in this group.

"The only chances they were getting were from our mistakes. We had a lot more of the ball in the second half but they sat everyone on top of their 18-yard box. I think we deserved a point but I can’t grumble with a defeat.

"We went five games without a win last season. I’m not worried. We’ll come through it no problem."

Stoke defender Glen Johnson told Sky Sports: "We had to work hard and dig in at times. The lads worked well together and we thoroughly deserved it. We are on a good run."

  11. Player reaction

Stoke goalkeeper Jack Butlandadmitted he was lucky to escape after a high tackle on Andre Ayew after passing the ball to the Swansea forward.

He told Sky Sports: "Yeah. It was a miscue – I was trying to play the ball to Glen Johnson and made a bit of a mess. That’s why I don’t do too many tackles. Hopefully I won’t be in that position again."

Don't blame me! Blame the Swansea and Stoke players.

  14. FULL-TIME - Swansea 0-1 Stoke

Stoke move up to 11th, overtaking Chelsea, after beating Swansea in a pretty woeful game.

  15. Post update

Bafetimbi Gomis, the Premier League's offside king, does it again. A chance wasted for Swansea as we enter the final minute.

  16. INJURY TIME

Three minutes added on. Can Swansea find a leveller?

  17. Post update

That is how not to head a ball. Jefferson Montero drops a cross in from the left and Ki Sung-yueng heads the ball with the top of his noggin, it's miles off target - that's got to hurt.

    We're almost in injury time.

  18. Post update

Joselu timed his run horribly wrong and was caught offside with a long ball over the top. The Stoke striker was in a lot of space there if he'd started his run a second later.

    Joselu
  19. Post update

Swansea's Bafetimbi Gomis gets the ball in the box, holds it up and finally he has a strike partner to pull the ball back to - unfortunately Eder drags his effort wide from 18 yards. At least they showed some movement there though.

  20. Post update

Swansea break down the left and Jefferson Montero's cross is poor and easily held by Jack Butland. Blow the whistle ref so we can all end this misery and go home.

  21. Post update

Is this going to be Swansea's fifth game without a win? Has Garry Monk had to overcome poor form like this yet in his managerial career?

    Garry Monk
  22. Post update

Gylfi Sigurdsson, usually decent with a free-kick, puts in a fairly rubbish cross which is headed clear. Time running out for Swansea.

  23. Post update

Well Eder has won a free-kick after losing two Stoke players with a brilliant turn. Marco van Ginkel has to hack him down to stop him. Free-kick from out wide.

  24. Post update

Eder, the 27-year-old summer signing, has failed to score in his first eight games for Swansea. Is this the night he becomes a hero?

    (Prediction: No)

  25. SUBSTITUTION

And now Swansea make their final change. Andre Ayew, who has been poor - maybe he hadn't fully recovered from his knee injury - comes off for Portuguese striker Eder.

  26. Post update

Steve Claridge is right. Stoke continue to get deeper and deeper. Can they hold on?

    Average epositions
  27. SUBSTITUTION

Stoke make their final change as Bojan - whose goal seems a lifetime ago - comes off for Stephen Ireland, whose international career seems a generation ago.

  28. Post update

Swansea coming forward but struggling to get in behind Stoke's defence. Glenn Whelan has done a good job in the holding role for the Potters.

Let's call a spade a spade, this is a pretty poor game.

  33. SUBSTITUTION

I don't think it would be unfair to suggest Stoke will have more running in midfield now that Marco van Ginkel, on loan from Chelsea, has replaced Charlie Adam.

  34. Post update

Swansea substitute Gylfi Sigurdsson has one of his team's best chances as he picks the ball up 30 yards from goal and has a great effort that curls just high and wide. He's improved the Swans since coming on.

  35. Post update

Stoke forward Marko Arnautovic, who has been one of the game's liveliest players, runs onto Xherdan Shaqiri's lofted ball over the top, but with keeper Lukasz Fabianski in his face he chips the ball wide.

    Marko Arnautovic
  36. Post update

Bafetimbi Gomis gets the ball with his back to goal after Ki Sung-yueng's dribble but he can't find space and his effort is deflected away.

It's not been a brilliant performance by the Swansea striker.

    Bafetimbi Gomis
  37. YELLOW CARD

Stoke maestro Xherdan Shaqiri is booked for shoving Neil Taylor in the back. Referee played advantage again before coming back to book the player - as he did with Jonjo Shelvey a while ago.

  38. Post update

Neil Taylor, who has never scored a league goal in 123 games for Swansea, attempts to lift the ball over keeper Jack Butland with the inside of his foot, but it's well over. A defender's effort.

  39. Post update

I said we couldn't make up our minds in the office about Jonjo Shelvey but he nearly changed the game with that shot a minute ago. Great hunger to steal possession just outside the area and a fine low drive. Inches from an equaliser.

    Shelvey shot graphic
  40. Post update

Good play by Swansea full-back Angel Rangel to dispossess Marko Arnautovic, who was in a dangerous position down the left wing. Those two have had a good battle today.

  41. SUBSTITUTION

Double change for Swansea, Gylfi Sigurdsson replaces Moduo Barrow behind the striker and Jack Cork comes off for Ki Sung-yueng in midfield.

  42. 'So unlucky'

    Swansea 0-1 Stoke

Quote Message: Ninety nine times out of 100 that goes in. That's so unlucky by Jonjo Shelvey. Swansea have come alive
  43. HITS THE WOODWORK

How has Jonjo Shelvey not levelled there? He knocks Philipp Wollscheid off the ball outside the box, charges into the area and his shot - through keeper Jack Butland's legs - hits the inside of the post but it refuses to cross the line.

  44. Post update

Marko Arnautovic has the ball in the net from an Erik Pieters cross but he was offside. The referee books Swansea midfielder Jonjo Shelvey, who had made a bad tackle a minute ago but the official played advantage.

    Marko Arnautovic scores

  45. Post update

Surely Swansea will have to bring on Gylfi Sigurdsson at some stage? it's a very bitty game.

  46. Post update

Stoke come forward but Bojan lazily loses the ball and Swansea break - but Bafetimbi Gomis loses possession with sloppy play of his own.

    Best league in the world?

Better than goal difference as a tie-breaker? Although maybe a bit too close to ice dancing.

  50. 'Swansea could be out of this'

    Swansea 0-1 Stoke

    Steve Claridge

BBC Radio 5 live at the Liberty Stadium

Quote Message: Swansea have started the second half the way they played the first half. They're giving the ball away. They could be out of this before Garry Monks make a substitution.
  51. Post update

Swansea striker Bafetimbi Gomis plays a one-two with Jack Cork and goes for a run but he's got no options and his shot from distance is deflected back to Jack Butland.

And seconds later Cork picks him out again and he shoots from 30 yards, again, but this time it's well over.

  52. Post update

    Steve Claridge

BBC Radio 5 live at the Liberty Stadium

Quote Message: There's nobody in midfield for Swansea to give the ball to and every time it does go in there they give it away
  53. Post update

Marko Arnautovic skips a tackle or two - he's had a lively game, and squares it to Xherdan Shaqiri, who takes another pretty poor shot for a £12m man.

  54. Post update

Stoke start the second half in an attacking frame of mind and former Inter Milan winger Xherdan Shaqiri curls an effort high and wide from inside the box.

  58. Mourinho's 'sophistication' costs him £50,000

    Jose Mourinho

It's not like Jose Mourinho to use excuses but...

The Chelsea managertried to use the fact English is not his first language as a defence for comments made after a defeat by Southampton.

Mourinho was given a suspended one-match stadium ban and a £50,000 fine by the Football Association for saying officials were "afraid" to award his team penalties.

The Portuguese has described the fine as a "disgrace" and appealed.

It was decided the 52-year-old's English is "too sophisticated" for that to be a defence for his comments.

Nobody has ever said that about my English...

  65. 'No quality'

    Swansea 0-1 Stoke

    Steve Claridge

Quote Message: There has been absolutely no quality from Swansea whatsoever from either wing. The worrying thing for Swansea is the manner they have performed so far. It's been a long way shy of what we imagined.
  66. HALF-TIME - Swansea 0-1 Stoke

Boos, presumably for the referee, from the Swansea fans as both sets of players come off for half-time.

  67. INJURY TIME

Quote Message: That might be a bit of frustration from Ashley Williams. It's not an elbow but it is a forearm into the back of the head. It is a booking and he knows it. Swansea have just not got going.
  72. YELLOW CARD

But seconds later Swansea captain Ashley Williams enters yellowtown for catching Joselu with his arm as they went up for a header - a small bit harsh. It wasn't intentional or very dangerous.

Ashley Williams is shown a yellow card
  73. Post update

Angel Rangel gets a lengthy chat from the referee but escapes a booking for his angry reaction to Marko Arnautovic putting his hand in his face.

  74. Post update

If Joselu had scored that overhead kick about five minutes ago it would have been one of the great Premier League goals. Not only was it an overhead kick from the edge of the area, but it came at the end of a lengthy passing move.

You didn't get that kind of thing under Tony Pulis, Stoke fans.

    Stoke move for Joselu strike
  75. Post update

Stoke forward Marko Arnautovic does well to keep the ball under pressure on the edge of the box and squares it to Charlie Adam, but the Scot screws his shot horribly wide from about 25 yards out. He'd probably have scored if it had been on the halfway line.

  76. 'Close'

    Swansea 0-1 Stoke

    Steve Claridge

BBC Radio 5 live at the Liberty Stadium

Quote Message: Jefferson Montero just does not track the run and Glen Johnson goes across him. He scuffs it wide from a really good angle when he just needs to hit the target.
  77. Post update

Good move by Stoke as Xherdan Shaqiri plays a great reverse ball to Glen Johnson, who charges into the box and drags his shot well wide. A poor effort from the (former?) England right-back.

  78. Post update

Jonjo Shelvey crosses in a corner but Jack Butland holds onto it. Andre Ayew is back on the pitch by the way. Crisis over for Swans fans.

  79. Push up lads!

  83. 'Fantastic effort'

    Swansea 0-1 Stoke

    Steve Claridge

BBC Radio 5 live at the Liberty Stadium

Quote Message: That was a fantastic effort by Joselu. Both teams have been guilty of giving the ball away too easily but Stoke will be very pleased with the first half an hour.
    Joselu of Stoke City
  84. Post update

I don't know too much about Stoke striker Joselu but he's just shot up in my book there. The Spanish summer signing from Hannover tries an outragous bicycle kick from outside the box. I mean, it went well wide but fair play for trying.

  85. Post update

Stoke have only had one shot so far in this game to Swansea's four - and that was the goal obviously.

    Mark Hughes
  86. Post update

Stoke give the ball to Bafetimbi Gomis, who runs forward but then runs out of ideas 20 yards from goal and is crowded out by the Potters defence.

Stoke goalkeeper Jack Butland is hugely fortunate not to concede a goal here. The England international appears to be in two minds and plays it straight to Andre Ayew. He makes up for it with a studs-up challenge on Ayew, which has really annoyed the Ghanaian. A small chance the ball might have struck Butland on an arm too from the rebound.

Bafetimbi Gomis has Swansea's first chance from open play but his header from Jack Cork's deep right-wing cross is well off target. It was probably slightly behind the striker.

    Steve Wilson

BBC Radio 5 live commentator at Liberty Stadium

"Discounting Premier League new boy Eddie Howe, the change of manager at Anfield has left Mark Hughes as the second longest-serving current boss in the top league with 29 months under his belt at the Britannia.

"No doubt Hughes - for five years the manager of the Welsh national team - will be relishing getting a taste of the feel-good factor in his home country, and expecting to dampen it just a touch whilst he's there.

"Swansea could do with the points, too, though. They're winless in five games in league and cup since beating Manchester United, whilst Stoke are now unbeaten in four."

    Swansea stat

This stat is accurate for another 35 minutes. Modou Barrow, who had a loan spell at Blackburn earlier this season, becomes number 15 today.

Let us know how you think this one will finish in our Predictor game.

Your club's reputation is at stake, as we have a table showing the set of fans who are best at predicting. Swansea could overtake West Ham at the top tonight but Stoke supporters need to pull their fingers out - the Potters are ninth.

  140. Why has Sigurdsson been dropped?

    Swansea v Stoke (20:00 BST)

    Steve Wilson

BBC Radio 5 live commentator at Liberty Stadium

Quote Message: Both these managers have got squads of 25 or so. What's the point of that if 10 don't even get off the bench? Swansea's sports science lads have probably got involved and said if Gylfi Sigurdsson plays 90 minutes then he probably risks injury.
  141. Post update

A Swansea win today would take them above Chelsea and Liverpool and into the top half of the table. Stoke could move up to 11th with a victory.

Brian McGillivary: Birmingham City 4 Swindon Town 6, blues leading 4-1 with 15 mins to go, then Glenn Hoddle came on

Daniel Btfc Turner: Braintree 5-0 Grimsby 2011 I wasn't expecting that

  145. Leeds make headlines twice in a day

    Steve Evans
Image caption: Any excuse to use this picture

The big news in English football today involved Leeds - not the first time we've said that.

United announced the sacking of Uwe Rosler earlier today and then replaced him with controversial ex-Boston and Rotherham manager Steve Evans.

And then minutes later, owner Massimo Cellino, who appointed Evans, was banned from running the club by the Football League for the second time in a year.

  147. Team news

Swansea make two changes, as Modou Barrow and Jack Cork replace Gylfi Sigurdsson and Ki Sung-yueng. Andre Ayew is fit to start after a knee problem.

Stoke also make two switches, as Xherdan Shaqiri and Joselu come in for Mame Diouf, who is on compassionate leave, and injured Jon Walters.

Swansea: Fabianski, Rangel, Fernandez, Williams, Taylor, Shelvey, Cork, Ayew, Barrow, Montero, Gomis. Subs: Ki, Britton, Nordfeldt, Eder, Sigurdsson, Naughton, Bartley.

Stoke: Butland, Johnson, Cameron, Wollscheid, Pieters, Adam, Whelan, Shaqiri, Krkic, Arnautovic, Joselu. Subs: Muniesa, Ireland, Wilson, Afellay, van Ginkel, Crouch, Haugaard. Referee: Robert Madley (West Yorkshire)

  149. Post update

This season I've covered Barcelona's 5-4 victory over Sevilla in the Uefa Super Cup, Bournemouth's 4-3 win over West Ham (a textbook unexpected classic) and Robert Lewandowski's five goals in nine minute haul against Wolfsburg.

So in the very likely event that I have a supernatural power to attract great games, we should be in for a good evening.

So we want to know what's the most surprising epic game you've ever been to?

For me it was an FAI Cup second-round replay in 2004 between Limerick FC and rivals Cobh Ramblers.

Limerick only had 13 players in their squad, including their player-manager, and had to play goalkeeper Jimmy Fyfe up front after bringing on a second keeper. The Lims scored in injury time to make it 2-2 but lost on penalties.

  152. Unexpected classics

Of course one of the greatest Premier League games of all time was one that you would not take a second look at when the fixture lists came out...

In September 2007, Portsmouth beat Reading 7-4 in the highest scoring Premier League game ever, with Benjani Mwaruwari scoring three. David James even saved a penalty.

  153. Will we see another 6-2 tonight?

    Newcastle players celebrate

Let's be honest. Swansea v Stoke is one of those fixtures where you might be happy to concede the remote control to save relationship goodwill for a Champions League game later in the week.

But then again, I'd have said the same before Newcastle v Norwich yesterday, and look how that one turned out...
