    Fran KirbyImage source, The FA

Fran Kirby bends the ball superbly into the top corner and it's moments like that why they call her Mini-Messi.

She received the ball down the right, then cut back inside shaping to shoot, but only continued to drift further across before pulling the trigger.

Great goal and one befitting of the mantle as title-deciding strike.

  2. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 19:20

    Chelsea 2-0 Sunderland

Chelsea make their first change and it is very much like for like as Drew Spence makes way for Millie Bright.

  3. ouch!

    Chelsea 2-0 Sunderlandpublished at 19:18

Beth Mead is clattered by Chelsea goalkeeper Hedvig Lindahl. Nothing nasty, but Mead certainly does not give up a chase when she is around that goalmouth.

If anything Chelsea have a moment to gather themselves as Mead is seen to for Sunderland.

  4. Kirby doubles Chelsea leadpublished at 19:18

"Fran Kirby's fairytale few months gets even better, and now the crowd here can relax a little.

"Once again, Chelsea use their pace down the wings to good effect. Gemma Davison gets in behind the Sunderland defence, before squaring for Kirby.

"Surely, surely, they can't throw this away now?"

  5. goal

    GOAL (Kirby)published at 19:14

    Chelsea 2-0 Sunderland

Gemma Davison is set free down the right, she takes two touches into the box to draw Lady Black Cats goalkeeper Hilde Gunn Olsen off her line and then puts it through to Fran Kirby.

Easy as you like, Kirby prods home to make it 2-0.

Is that the goal that decides this title race?

Fran Kirby just touches the ball back to Eniola Aluko and the England forward cannons it goalward.

However, it is too close to Hilde Gunn Olsen and the goalkeeper deals with it.

Chelsea have had a let-off there, but it's still very much in their hands.

  12. CLOSE!published at 19:06

    Chelsea 1-0 Sunderland

The ball just bobbles in the box and hits the post for Chelsea after Gilly Flaherty headed across goal. Looked almost to be an own goal in the end.

At the other end, Beth Mead gets past Claire Rafferty and while the Sunderland striker composed herself she put her effort wide.

The title race very nearly got turned on its head.

As it stands the the WSL 1 title will be decided today, but women's football action is a long way from being done.

This week alone, we have Liverpool and Chelsea beginning their Women's Champions League campaigns.

Liverpool travel to Italy to face Brescia on Tuesday and Chelsea are back at Staines Town on Wednesday to entertain Glasgow City.

But that is not all, because it is semi-final time in the Continental Tyres Cup next Sunday. Chelsea and Man City are both already out, but Liverpool host Notts County and Arsenal are at home to Birmingham City.

On the league front, the WSL 2 title is yet to be decided with the curtain coming down on the second tier on Sunday, 18 October.

Could there possibly be more? Well yes, as competitions outside the WSL run during the winter and are just a matter of weeks in.

There is no such thing as a break from women's football in England!

This season has been defined by England's bronze-medal Women's World Cup success, but the game has thrown up a number of intriguing stories.

Ever heard the tale about the former England international who started her football life on a field of goose poo?

What about the one about the Oxford graduate who delivered a baby before training?

As the English game grows, we are seeing foreign playing number increase and the myriad of stories of amateur players in a game fast turning professional become more and more remarkable.

Players have simply refused to let football get in the way of life - defender Grace McCatty is shining example of that, having left Bristol after the opening weeks of the season to volunteer in Zambia.

  19. Belles and Royals promotedpublished at 18:56

    HT: Chelsea 1-0 Sunderland

    Looking elsewhere for a moment.

Doncaster Rovers Belles and Reading secured promotion to WSL 1 with victories a week ago.

For the Belles, 2016 will be their top-flight return after being controversially demoted as the WSL expanded to two competitions.

As it turned out, Doncaster credit that very decision for saving the club.

Reading's promotion has been widely welcomed as their run to the quarter-finals of the Continental Tyres Cup won theim plenty of praise.

  20. Another trophy for Chapman?published at 18:54

    HT: Chelsea 1-0 Sunderland

If Chelsea captain Katie Chapman lifts the Women's Super League One trophy later this evening, she will add yet another title to her impressive honours list.

Chelsea's half-time leader against Sunderland will be enough to make this possible, even if Manchester City do beat Notts County.
