He will have to go into it full tilt and start delegating a little bit! It's a great opportunity for Gaz. He's brilliant at whatever he does and he has prepared for this over the past four or five years I’m sure. It’s a brilliant that a club like Valencia have taken a gamble on a young coach.

  9. 'Speaks the language of players'published at 21:12 Greenwich Mean Time 5 December 2015

    Valencia appoint Gary Neville

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

It is a daunting leap from punditry into coaching and management, but Gary Neville is someone who always seemed destined to make his long-term career in the latter, even if this current time away from the studio turns out to be only temporary.

One of the questions asked of elite players who make the move into management is whether they can they cope with handling players who may not have the same drive, attitude and approach as themselves.

Neville has his standards but will also be a realist. He will accept honest failings but not a lack of professionalism. He speaks the language of players so relating to them should not be a problem.

  13. CLOSE!published at 76 mins

    Valencia 0-1 Barcelona

Brilliant by Neymar as he embarks on a mazy run, past one white shirt and then another. He reaches the edge of Valencia's penalty area before unleashing a curling shot that fizzes just wide. Make no mistake. that would have been a goal of the season contender had that hit the net.

Gary's desire was always unbelievable and his leadership was great and that's what you want from a manager - desire, leadership and organisation and he's got that in abundance. Even as a youngster, he was always organising.

That was a fine finish by Luis Suarez. But Valencia will be unhappy the former Liverpool forward is still on the pitch after replays of his altercation with Aymen Abdennour appears to show a stamp.
