    Valencia appoint Gary Neville

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

It is a sign of Gary Neville's confidence in himself that he has accepted the challenge at the Mestalla. And in many respects he has served the perfect apprenticeship to start this phase of his career in such pressurised surroundings.

He spent 19 years under the tutelage of Sir Alex Ferguson, arguably Britain's greatest manager, at Manchester United, winning 20 trophies and establishing himself as a figure of significance and influence in a dressing room packed with powerful personalities.

Neville also won 85 England caps and his coaching education has been rounded off even further by his association with the national team, where he has been at Roy Hodgson's side along with Ray Lewington since his appointment in 2012. Neville is the sort of character who will have been soaking up vital information like a sponge.

    Valencia v Barcelona (19:30 GMT)

This time last week Gary Neville was dissecting Manchester United's draw at Leicester in front of the television cameras while Valencia were preparing for a game away to Sevilla with Nuno Espirito Santo in charge.

Fast forward a few days and Nuno is no more and Neville has been charged with taking Los Che forward after securing his first managerial job.

The former Manchester United and England defender officially takes charge on Sunday but the size of the task he has taken on should become clear in the next two hours. Champions Barcelona are in town, with Neymar, Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez in scintillating form.

"I'm precious what I associate myself with. Sitting on the television over the last few years, it is time now to stand up. If I turned down this job I could have kissed goodbye to my credibility."

Has Gary Neville bitten off more than he can chew by taking charge of Valencia? Or is this the beginning of a magnificent managerial career?

    It's time to find out.

    Valencia appoint Gary Neville

    Andy West
    Spanish football writer

"Valencia fans are renowned as the most volatile and fickle in Spain, and their immediate reaction to the news Neville will be their manager was positive, but not without dissent.

"At the time of this article's publication, a majority of fans - 71% - had voted in favour of his appointment in a website poll held by local newspaper Superdeporte. , externalBut that still leaves plenty of supporters who are opposed to his arrival.
