Everton have lost the timidity of the first half hour and are really pressing Manchester City now. Romelu Lukaku is making life very uncomfortable for that reshuffled defence of Martin Demichelis and Nicolas Otamendi.

It's been a slow burner but Goodison Park is right into this now.

Don't forget a clean sheet could be very, very precious for Everton.

With away goals counting double after extra time in the second leg, the hosts know how big a Manchester City goal could be.

He is at the heart of everything good. This time he finds Gareth Barry, who in turn slips the ball to Ross Barkley on the left.

Barkley drills in a low cross across the face of goal - it is so inviting - but Romelu Lukaku is a stud away from touching home.

Everton's goal capped the best spell of the half for Roberto Martinez's side, who had struggled to impose themselves on Manchester City early on.

City are seeing plenty of the ball but lack pace and penetration - could be set up for Raheem Sterling after the break.

MUFC2014: under the current interpretation, Lukaku was offside. There should have been better communication between the officials.  

Andy Knowles: Bright start. But toothless and Everton by far the biggest threat. Toffees deserve the lead   

Lewis Keefe: Everton and Stoke are proof it isn't about the size of the dog in the fight, but the fight in the dog. Respect due to both   

Adrian Smith: Everton are good value for that - MCFC are clearly just waiting to get it back to the Etihad.   

Manchester City have shaded possession and had eight shots to Everton's two.

It seems strange to say but the stats don't tell the whole story.

Everton have been the better side - bar a very slow start from them.
