After a dull start this has really livened up. Louis van Gaal can have no complaints about being bored.

"Aleksandar Mitrovic produced some good centre-forward play as he held the ball up well and and nodded it into the path of Georginio Wijnaldum. He missed a chance earlier but there was no mistake this time."

Anthony Martial gives the first glimpse of his ability this game with a driving run from the left and a low shot that takes a deflection for a corner. Chris Smalling meets Daley Blind's delivery at the back post but heads it straight out for a goal-kick.

Fair play to Georginio Wijnaldum. He missed one from a similar position (that was probably an easier chance) earlier but he took that chance superbly. It is very, very timely as well. Newcastle probably didn't have it in them to come back from 2-0 down at half-time.

Newcastle hit back immediately! Aleksandar Mitrovic shows great strength and awareness to head a long ball into the box back for Georginio Wijnaldum, who makes no mistake with a low shot off his shin into the bottom corner. Game very much back on!

Good goal. Really good goal. Ander Herrera's superb forward pass finds Wayne Rooney, who  holds the ball up before showing excellent awareness to find Jesse Lingard, who had charged up on his left. Lingard does the rest with a low finish. Poor Fabricio Coloccini had no idea what was going on during that move.

No ifs, no buts, Georginio Wijnaldum should have equalised for Newcastle.

    Newcastle 0-1 Man Utd

Chris Smalling abandons his defensive remit with a charge to near the edge of the Newcastle box to set up an away attack that ends with a very hopeful and ultimately wasteful long-range shot from Matteo Darmian that flies well wide.

  11. YELLOW CARDpublished at 35 mins

    Newcastle 0-1 Man Utd

Well played Chancel Mbemba. He is faced with the charging Jesse Lingard near his own byline but shows good strength to hold him off and win a goal-kick. Mike Dean then shows a yellow card to Cheick Tiote a yellow card for an earlier foul on Ander Herrera.

It is getting lively. The home crowd scream for a penalty as Daryl Janmaat falls under a tackle from Jesse Lingard. It was a wild challenge by the away player but he did just get the ball. Just.

  13. YELLOW CARDpublished at 30 mins

    Newcastle 0-1 Man Utd

A second away player goes into the book as Ander Herrera trips Georginio Wijnaldum. It provides the home side with a free-kick on the left in the Manchester United half, which Ayoze Perez swings in and David de Gea punches away.

    Newcastle 0-1 Man Utd

Wijnaldum surely! No! Great save by David de Gea! The Newcastle midfielder has the goal at his mercy from 12 yards out after being found in the box by Ayoze Perez, but shoots too close to the away keeper who saves superbly with his boot. Best chance by far for the home side.

Oh, so close! Wayne Rooney scampers away and into space to beat the offside trap and gather Jesse Lingard's pass, but his low shot skips past the far post after beating keeper Rob Elliott. That was an excellent chance and considering the quality of the player it fell to, should have been converted.

  16. YELLOW CARDpublished at 26 mins

    Newcastle 0-1 Man Utd

    Marouane FellainiImage source, AFP

Good movement from Ander Herrera buys him space down the right to be found by a neat pass before delivering a low cross that takes a deflection and goes behind. The resulting corner causes chaos that Marouane Fellaini almost capitalises on with a low shot that is blocked by the sliding Paul Dummett. Fellaini then slams into the fallen home defender and is given the booking that has had his name on it for the last 10 minutes.

    Newcastle 0-1 Man Utd

Speaking of the penalty, it was Rooney's 19th in the Premier League, putting him eighth in the list of most penalty goals in the division's history. According to Opta, it also took Rooney ahead of Ruud van Nistelrooy's record of 18 penalties scored for Manchester United in the Premier League.

    Newcastle 0-1 Man Utd

OK, I still think it was a harsh decision to give the penalty but having seen a slow motion replay from an angle behind the referee, I can now see why it was given. Chancel Mbemba's arm was up somewhat unnecessarily and did block a potentially goal-bound header.

Meanwhile, Fellaini gets a warning from Mike Dean for a third foul in quick succession. A booking awaits his next foul, surely.

  19. Postpublished at 16 mins

    Newcastle 0-1 Man Utd

Jesse Lingard is proving the most mobile and willing runner for Manchester United. He chases in vain after a long ball forward from Ander Herrera. His lack of success in reaching it is more to do with the ball than his run, though. Only one thing of note has happened so far - the goal.

Buoyed by their goal, Manchester United are now on top against a shell-shocked home side. The majority of play is now taking place in the home half. I've seen a few replays of the penalty decision. Looks less like a spot-kick with each one.
