Nice touch from the Newcastle players tonight. They are wearing T-shirts with a picture of ex-Newcastle keeper Pavel Srnicek on the back.

Srnicek recently died at the age of 47, nine days after suffering a cardiac arrest in his native Czech Republic.

A big favourite with fans during his first spell at St James' Park between 1991 and 1998, Srnicek collapsed while jogging on 20 December.

  4. Newcastle splash the cashpublished at 19:23

It would be fair to say that the end of this season would not be the perfect time to suffer a relegation from the Premier League. With top-flight teams set to rake in more TV revenue cash than ever before, it would be very much in the interests of a club to remain relegation-less in 2015-16.

To this end, this January transfer window has the potential to be as busy as any we have seen. Bournemouth have already gone big, and Newcastle are not far behind them on the early pace-setting.

Yesterday, they completed the signing of midfielder Henri Saivet from Bordeaux on a five-and-a-half-year deal for an undisclosed fee. And today they have added another midfield man in the shape of Jonjo Shelvey from Swansea for £12m.

It is expected that the latter will be unveiled at St James' Park tonight.

  5. Let me (not) entertain youpublished at 19:20

Newcastle v Man Utd (19:45 GMT)

In all seriousness, Manchester United have hardly set the league on fire this season. They have scored 24 goals in 20 league matches and suffered the ignominy of being booed off after their narrow 1-0 win over League One Sheffield United in the FA Cup third-round at Old Trafford.

Similarly, Newcastle are struggling for goals of their own. Only two sides in the top flight have scored fewer than the Magpies - Swansea and Aston Villa (both of whom have sacked their manager this campaign).

It is all a far cry from the 1996-97 season, when these two might as well have played out their games with a certain Scott Joplin 1902 piano rag classic playing in the background (ask your grandparents, kids).

  6. Boring, boring Manchester Unitedpublished at 19:15

Newcastle v Man Utd (19:45 GMT)

Hands up who thinks Manchester United are boring to watch? OK... one, two, three, four, five, s.... hang on a sec... Louis, no, I don't think you should have your hand up. Why? Well, you're the manager, you're supposed to back your team, hail their attacking prowess... Oh, he's nodded off.

Yes, this week LVG admitted that even he, the Manchester United manager, has been "very bored" during some games this season. I sympathise with him. After all, it's not like he has the power to do anything about it?!
