Was that a penalty at Newcastle? The consensus seems to be a very big no.

  2. 'I didn't think it was a penalty'published at 19:58 Greenwich Mean Time 12 January 2016

"My initial reaction was that no way was that a penalty. It seemed like Marouane Fellaini hit it on to Chancel Mbemba. I didn't think that was a penalty at all but clever from Wayne Rooney on the penalty - he put the one at the weekend to the goalkeeper's right but put it to the left this time."

GOAL - Newcastle 0-1 Man Utdpublished at 9 mins

Whether it should be a penalty or not, Wayne Rooney makes no mistake with a cool spot-kick that sends Rob Elliott the wrong way and finds the net. It is the striker's second penalty goal in two games following his FA Cup winner against Sheffield United at the weekend.

  4. PENALTY - Manchester Unitedpublished at 9 mins

    Newcastle 0-0 Man Utd

Surely not?! Manchester United have a penalty as Marouane Fellaini's header at the back post from a corner cannons into the arm of his marker Chancel Mbemba. Referee Mike Dean points straight to the spot. Harsh. Very harsh.

Ayoze Perez is dragged back by Marouane Fellaini and Newcastle have a free-kick in Manchester United territory. The same home player takes it, but the away side are able to head clear easily. Those hoping this game would buck the trend of dullness from these two will be a bit disappointed so far. Plenty of time for that to change, though.

  6. Postpublished at 4 mins

    Newcastle 0-0 Man Utd

Plenty of possession for Newcastle in these early stages. No efforts on goal yet, though. Manchester United are well organised and digging in to ward off any early home enthusiasm.

    Newcastle 0-0 Man Utd

Newcastle force the first corner, courtesy of some good work by Moussa Sissoko. Jack Colback swings it in but Manchester United deal with it well.

After a passionate and heartfelt minute's applause for former Newcastle goalkeeper Pavel Srnicek, who died recently of a cardiac arrest, aged just 47, the game gets under way.

Darren Peacock started it and Philippe Albert finished it with that famous chip over Peter Schmeichel. I am, of course, referring to the time Kevin Keegan's Newcastle hit Sir Alex Ferguson's Manchester United for five. It is arguably the greatest display in Newcastle's history and gave them hope of winning the title.

However, Keegan would be gone by January and his replacement, Kenny Dalglish could only manage second place behind, you guessed it, Manchester United. So near, yet so far.

    Alan Shearer
Former England striker on BBC Radio 5 live

Asked if he would score in this Manchester United side: "Not as many as I would like to because they don't create that many chances.

"We are used to Manchester United attacking with speed and power but that is not the case at present. We used to fear Manchester United but that fear is not there now. Teams believe they can now get something out of this team but that wasn't the case a few years ago.

"I'm just watching Wayne Rooney warm up and his finishing looks spot on."

"Newcastle are now out of the FA Cup. This game should be a very good occasion for them, and we know they will be in trouble if they don't get something from tonight."

  17. 'Shelvey the right kind of player for Newcastle'published at 19:37

Newcastle v Man Utd (19:45 GMT)

Ex-Newcastle defender Steve Watson spoke to BBC Radio 5 live earlier and had some positive things to say about new signing Jonjo Shelvey...

"He is a quality player, an England international and more importantly, for me, he is a home-grown talent. Newcastle have been short of English talent in the squad. He is exactly the kind of player I'd have been looking at getting."

"People like Andros Townsend may be available from Spurs. Exciting attacking players like that would be a real big asset for Newcastle. I know they haven't scored many goals recently but they have been suffering narrow defeats. There is improvement there but we can't keep saying that. They need to turn those into results now."

Newcastle's two new signings - Jonjo Shelvey and Henri Saivet - are getting a decent reception as they come out on to the pitch at St James' Park. You know the drill; walk around, clap, wave to a few folk. For most players, this is the best reception they will ever get at a club. Enjoy it lads!

  19. 'I fancy Newcastle'published at 19:35

Newcastle v Man Utd (19:45 GMT)

More from former Newcastle defender Steve Watson on BBC Radio 5 live: "Manchester United fans are used to quick, counter-attacking players and the Newcastle fans are looking for the same thing. It is two clubs in transition. Man United have quality but they are not firing. It is a chance and I fancy Newcastle to get something tonight."
