Christian Benteke is the sort of powerhouse of a striker which the Exeter defence encounter on a regular basis.

The Belgian wins a flick on though and Joao Teixeira's ball towards the feet of Jerome Sinclair is cut out by the defence.

    Alan Shearer
    FormerNewcastle striker on BBC One

"I spoke to Exeter manager Paul Tisdale this week. He believes he can cause problems by getting balls into the box. Keeper Adam Bogdan is good at shotstopping, but don't be surprised if Exeter are raining balls in. Even more so when they have an inexperienced back four."

Former Crystal Palace striker Clinton Morrison is on the bench for Exeter.

He has just said that he has always enjoyed "banter" with the Liverpool fans.

I'm not sure that they enjoyed it so much.

After Palace's League Cup semi-final first leg win over Liverpool in 2001, he offered this assessment of the Reds strikers.

"Heskey missed a few and Owen missed a few. I was thinking, I wish I had some of the chances they had. I would have put at least two of them away.

“Owen has not been the same since his injury problems."

Not far wrong with that last point.

    Alan Shearer
Former Newcastle striker on BBC One

"Tom Nicholls has nine goals this season. If you get crosses in then he can put them in. Liverpool's defenders Tiago Llori and Jose Enrique have not played that much football this season."

That third-round tie against Manchester United 11 years ago could well have saved Exeter from extinction.

The £1m raised from the draw at Old Trafford and the televised replay at St James Park helped clear the club's debts.

Tony Cascarino - who drew Exeter out of the hat to face United in 2005 - is still revered by the club's fans and recently travelled down to meet some of them in a local pub.

Jurgen Klopp maybe king of the football hipsters, but Exeter counterpart Paul Tisdale is the manager for hipster hipster.

The 42-year-old, who has been at Exeter since June 2006, is good mates with Ray Kelvin, the man behind the Ted Baker fashion brand.

Which means he stalks the touchline in a range of snazzy numbers.

"You look in the technical area next to me and I feel one-nil up already – he’s got his tracksuit bottoms tucked into his socks,” said Tisdale., external

There is nothing to rival theWestfalenstadion's famous south stand - at 25,000 the largest free-standing grandstand in Europe - but there is a little of Borussia Dortmund's yellow and black on display to make Jurgen Klopp at home at St James Park.

  18. Postpublished at 19:27

    Exeter v Liverpool (19:55 GMT)

    Danny Murphy
    Ex-Liverpool midfielder on BBC One

    On the Liverpool line-up:

"It would be a catastrophe if Liverpool lose. Regarding the starting XI, midfielder Joe Allen, who hasn't had many minutes, could have played and James Milner could have also played. He could have played his best keeper. Christian Benteke is the only senior player asked to start the game.

    On the Liverpool injuries:

"I think it's clear the difference in training methods have had an impact in some way. I've played under managers, like Mark Hughes at Fulham, where he said we had to work harder in training. We had injuries too.

"Reds manager Jurgen Klopp is an intelligent man and learning lessons as he goes along. And in January he can bring some players in. It's not his fault and not his training's fault but there can be some link of the high-intensity playing to the injuries."

He may have more Liverpool appearances than any other player in the Liverpool line-up, but even his own manager seemed caught out when Jose Enrique's name was mentioned to him earlier in the week.

"Who?” said Klopp when asked about the Spaniard before admitting "we could need his experience”.

Enrique last played for Liverpool on 24 January 2015. He has earned north of £3m since then., external
