"Big match in Denmark for Manchester United tonight - big rumours about their captain from Manchester.

"No-one is breaking cover to confirm - or deny - a story that United would be willing to sell Wayne Rooney to one of the cash-rich Chinese clubs.

"Maybe the reason for that is the uncertainty over Louis van Gaal, who, at best, seems set to leave in the summer, and therefore a new manager would be deciding whether Rooney will start next season.

"One key date to bear in mind in any thoughts though; 3 August, 2016.

"United have already granted Rooney a testimonial in recognition of 12 years' service. Good causes have already been chosen.

"Would be an odd testimonial if the person it was for had left the club two months earlier."

FC Midtjylland v Man Utd (18:00 GMT)

So who are Manchester United playing tonight then? FC Midtjylland were only formed in 1999, the year United won their famous treble. Extraordinary.

They are based in the Danish town of Herning, the population of which would fit into Old Trafford and still leave space for 30,000 United fans.

Herning, which is on the Jutland peninsula, is the home of Danish cycling apparently and also boasts the 'biggest sculpture in the northern part of Europe' - which sounds a bit dodgy to me.

It may not be Madrid or Milan, but for United tonight it's the centre of the universe...

It must get boring eventually to own a club in the Championship and try and get into the Premier League.

No, I don't imagine so either, but why else would Brentford owner Matthew Benham become the majority shareholder of  FC Midtjylland?

That's what he did in 2014 and has seen the club go from strength to strength since.

Manchester United have lots of injuries - is this another one? David de Gea has limped away from the warm up. No news on that yet but it could mean that Sergio Romero will start.

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal: "Wayne Rooney was in good shape so it is a blow but every injury is a blow. I have to make solutions which is not good for continuity.

"It is a chance for them [the youngsters] to stake a claim for a place. I hope they do well."

    Fiorentina v Tottenham (18:00 GMT)

Tottenham have put themselves in a great position to try and win the Premier League this season, but they're going full gun for the Europa League too.

I thought they may be tempted to leave the entire squad at home but they've named a fairly strong side.

You can follow that game in full here.

  10. Off to China?published at 17:31 Greenwich Mean Time 18 February 2016

FC Midtjylland v Man Utd (18:00 GMT)

The Chinese Super League is doing its best to make multi-millionaires multi-multi-multi millionaires at the moment, and are they now keen to make Wayne Rooney their latest mega-signing?

The Manchester Evening News report, external that United are open to the idea of flogging Rooney to China in the summer, where he could earn a ludicrous £500,000 a week. Or £71,428 a day if you prefer. £2m a month. Before tax.

It's such a ludicrous idea that it may just happen. Would that give everyone a happy ending to Wayne's Old Trafford stay?

Paul Lummis: Was at an NHL hockey game on Saturday in Dallas, tickets cost $145 (£87) where we were. Most expensive were about $500 (£349).

Unless you are related by blood there are no household names in the Danish side tonight but lower league fans in England will recognise a few players.

Midtjylland goalkeeper Mikkel Andersen was at Reading for eight years and also played on loan at Torquay, Brighton, Bristol Rovers and Portsmouth among other clubs. Croatian forward Martin Pusic, not involved tonight, had a spell with Hull and midfielder Kristoffer Olsson was a trainee at Arsenal but made just one senior appearance, in a September 2013 League Cup tie at West Brom.

It's £71 to get in, Wayne Rooney's crocked, loads of first-team players are out and Shrek the musical is on at Salford Quays.

There are lots of reasons for Manchester United fans to give this one a miss tonight, but why should they be interested?Well, how about that a win in the Europa League would guarantee a place in next year's Champions League, for starters.

With United six points off the pace of the top four in the Premier League that may become a very enticing selling point as the rounds go on...

World lightweight boxing champion - and travelling Manchester United fan - Anthony Crolla in Herning: "It’s clear to see that £71 is just wrong. There are a lot of fans out here without tickets who are still trying to get some and it’s out of order. It cost a lot of money for fans to get over here as well. From a business point of view I understand that it’s the biggest game in their history but it’s time to put fans first.

“It’s a must-win game. Manchester United expect to be in the Champions League and our best chance, possibly our only chance, of being there again is to win the Europa League. Going out would not be acceptable. We need to be in the Champions League and if we are then at least Louis van Gaal would leave a decent lasting impression.”

  19. How much?!published at 17:11 Greenwich Mean Time 18 February 2016

FC Midtjylland v Man Utd (18:00 GMT)

FC Midtjylland say selling tickets for £71 was "fair".

United fans are planning to protest at the cost of admission for the first leg of their last-32 tie at the Danish champions' 11,800-capacity MCH Arena.

Southampton supporters were charged £22 to attend a Europa League play-off match at the same venue in August.

"We could have sold over 50,000 tickets," Midtjylland sports director Claus Steinlein told Ritzaus Bureau.

"So, in relation to supply and demand, the price might have been even higher.

"I think, in fact, we have been fair, and we've certainly had no trouble selling tickets."

If you missed the news yesterday, oh boy.

Manchester United and England captain Wayne Rooney is facing about six weeks on the sidelines with a knee injury.

Rooney picked up the injury in last weekend's loss at Sunderland and could now miss United's next eight matches.

"He scores a lot of goals so he is very important for us. We know that but we have to cope," said manager Louis van Gaal.

The 30-year-old forward has not been included in the squad to travel to Denmark.
