  9. 300 up for Messipublished at 19:25 Greenwich Mean Time 17 February 2016

    Spanish La Liga

An unusual kick-off in Spain this afternoon as Lionel Messi became the first player to reach 300 La Liga goals as he scored twice in Barcelona's victory over Sporting Gijon.

Barca are six points clear at the top thanks to a 31st game without defeat - extending their Spanish record.

Messi opened the scoring from just outside the box for goal number 300 but Carlos Castro levelled moments later.

Messi added his second from a pass by Luis Suarez, who then had a penalty saved before curling home a third goal.

John McEnerney: Henrik "The King of Kings" Larsson back at Celtic, he'd bring style to Celtic's game and would get us back to winning ways in the Champions League.

Geoff Carver: Chris Wilder at Sheffield United. Not up with Real Madrid maybe but a good call based on his Northampton exploits.

Matthew Size: Carragher with Gerrard as assistant. Dream team, Liverpool is in their blood.

    China crisis

Paris St-Germain forward Ezequiel Lavezzi has joined Chinese Super League club Hebei China Fortune on a two-year deal reported to be worth £23.5m.

The Argentina international was out of contract in the summer and had been linked with Chelsea and Inter Milan., external

But the 30-year-old has instead joined the Beijing-based side, who are owned by billionaire Wang Wenxue.

The league's transfer window shuts on 26 February and over £200m has been spent on signings so far.

Jiangsu Suning paid £63.4m for Brazilian midfielders Alex Teixeira and Ramires, while Jackson Martinez has made a £31m move to Guangzhou Evergrande from Atletico Madrid.

Roma v Real Madrid (19:45 GMT)

Real go in search of European Cup/Champions League win number 11 tonight, but how strong a challenge will Roma present?

They are fourth in Serie A, 10 points behind leaders Juventus, and have kept only one clean sheet in their last 20 Champions League games.

And, with all due respect, that was against BATE Borisov in their last outing...

Two great calls here, but which former player would you like to see back in the dugout?

Robert Prosinecki at Portsmouth. Has improved Azerbaijan's world ranking since taking over and could probably still do the job on the pitch despite smoking 20 a day!

    Mitchell

Henning Berg should be a warning about bringing ex-players in to manage, but I'd still love to see Tugay manage Blackburn - a true legend and hopefully get us firing again!

    Someone is watching me...

Gent may have surprised everyone by getting this far but the scouts are now circling.

Gent are the first Belgian club in 15 years to reach the last 16 of the Champions League and president Ivan De Witte has told BBC World Service that 13 Premier League teams will be there to watch his striker Laurent Depoitre tonight.

"We have a very difficult decision to make on him, we can't forget that in a few weeks we start the playoffs and we are aiming to win the championship again," he said.

"I get two or three calls a week about him, we are aware there is a lot of interest.”

A good game tonight could add a few Euros to his price tag...

Midtjylland chairman Rasmus Ankersen has defended his club's decision to charge Manchester United supporters £71 for tomorrow night's Europa League tie in Denmark.

“It’s a big game for the region, we could have taken in to another stadium and sold 50,000 or 60,000 tickets, but wanted to dedicate this game to the fans who come every week," Ankerson told BBC Radio 5 live.

"We are charging the same amount for Danish fans as Manchester United fans. Our fans have not complained about it. I understand the frustrations of the United fans but we have to try to make everyone happy.

“It’s a lot of money but people here think this is a once in a lifetime experience.”

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal says he must "wait and see" how long captain Wayne Rooney will be sidelined with a knee injury.

The 30-year-old, who has scored seven goals in his past nine games, will miss United's Europa League match against FC Midtjylland on Thursday.

Some newspapers reported the England captain could be out for two months., external

"You can never say. We have 13 players injured and Wayne is one of them," said Van Gaal.

"He scores a lot of goals so he is very important for us. We know that but we have to cope."

Should his absence run to two months, Rooney could miss as many as 11 United games and two England friendlies.
