    BBC Sport Wales in Bordeax

"Chris Coleman has gone for a bold selection on this historic day, picking Crystal Palace midfielder Jonny Williams to play in an advanced role behind Gareth Bale in attack.

"Williams and Aaron Ramsey will be given freedom to roam as two "number 10s" behind Bale, while Dave Edwards starts deeper in midfield as Joe Ledley is kept on the bench as he continues his recovery from a broken leg in May."

Gary Lineker gets the thumbs up by starting Match of the Day Live's coverage of Wales against Slovakia by speaking Welsh.

Eifion Weinzweig: Gary Lineker speaking Welsh before our #EURO2016 game is historic. Da iawn butty. Come on Wales!!!

Dawn Williams: That was some decent Welsh from Gary Lineker, there.

    Wales v Slovakia (17:00 BST)

    John Hartson
    Ex-Wales striker on BBC One

"The Wales fans woke me up several times last night. I wanted to go join them, Bordeaux is a sea of red.

"We've been working for two years to get here. A lot of hard work has gone into it. This is the time. We have to come here and perform.

"We'd like to enjoy it but we also want to be competitive.

"It means the world to the fans. They have had some near disappointments and now we have managed to get over the line. Chris Coleman has done a magnificent job. Going forward we have got players who can make a real difference for us."

  8. Ward's unexpected chancepublished at 15:54 British Summer Time 11 June 2016

    Wales v Slovakia (17:00 BST)

    Dafydd Pritchard
    BBC Sport Wales in Bordeaux

"The big talking point in Bordeaux is the absence of Wales goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey for today's opening Euro 2016 game against Slovakia.

"The 29-year-old, who has won 57 caps and conceded just four goals in Wales’ 10 qualifiers, has suffered a back spasm.

"Hennessey is expected to be replaced by Liverpool’s Danny Ward, who has only made two appearances for his country.

"Ward made his Premier League debut for Liverpool in April but, with so little experience at international level, this would be an enormous stage on which to make his competitive appearance for Wales."

    Robbie Savage
    Ex-Wales midfielder on BBC One

"It is a historic day for Welsh football. To be here as a Welshman and watching my country at a major tournament is fantastic.

"The togetherness is what is special about this team and that splash of a superstar in Gareth Bale. If half of this team walked down the street in Great Britain you wouldn't know them.

"With Gareth Bale, what a chance this team has today."

If there are any nerves in the Wales camp then Chris Coleman and his players have done a pretty good job at disguising them since touching down in France.

On Thursday Gareth Bale happily answered questions from pupils at his former school in Cardiff while Coleman had a joke at England's expense with a team-sheet spoof.

After newspapers published a picture of England assistant Ray Lewington carrying a team sheet with what many speculated would be England's starting line-up against Russia, Coleman decided to have some fun.

The next day he was pictured with a team sheet but instead of Sam Vokes and Hal Robson-Kanu, scribbled down on Coleman's sheet were the names of Pele and Diego Maradona.

    If only...

  14. Ledley back for Wales?published at 15:36 British Summer Time 11 June 2016

Will Joe Ledley take to the pitch in Bordeaux?

The Crystal Palace midfielder broke his leg on 7 May yet, incredibly, could feature against Slovakia.

Fellow midfielder Joe Allen and striker Hal Robson-Kanu are also set to return after injury.

Team news coming up in around about 25 minutes.

  15. Red carnival in Bordeauxpublished at 15:33 British Summer Time 11 June 2016

    Dafydd Pritchard
    BBC Sport Wales in Bordeaux

"Bordeaux has been awash with red shirts over the past few days, and those who have travelled here to support Wales appear to be in a constant state of joyful disbelief.

"It is 58 years since Wales were last at a major tournament, so this a new experience to almost everybody who is in France to watch Chris Coleman's side face Slovakia.

"There was a carnival vibe on the streets of Bordeaux last night, with fans of Wales and Slovakia mixing together and rejoicing in a first appearance at a European Championship for both teams."

    Wales v Slovakia (17:00 BST)

Whatever happens in France over the next week or so, Jan Kozak has a place in history after becoming the first boss to lead Slovakia to the European finals.

The 62-year-old former Czechoslovakia midfielder is a wily fox, who ekes everything he can out of his squad and is not afraid to mix his tactics up.

Kozak is also a Real Madrid fan and admirer of one Gareth Bale.

Asked if he would try and get Bale to sign something after the game, Kozak smiled: "Bale, after the game, will ask me for my autograph."
