Adam Lallana: Another who vindicated Hodgson’s faith. Strong running and only marks off for a couple of chances missed in the first half. 7.

Raheem Sterling: Got worse as the game went on, betraying a lack of confidence. May be under threat against Wales. 5.

Harry Kane: Quiet night for the Spurs striker, who got little service and support and mysteriously still takes England’s corners. Will improve as he has real class. 5.

Eric Dier: Impressive on the ball, solid in the tackle and a thunderous free kick for his goal. 7.

Dele Alli: Showed some good touches and confidence at this level. More to come. 6.

Wayne Rooney: England’s man of the match. Great range of passing and controlled the game until he was taken off. Outstanding. 8.

There are plenty of positives to take. But Roy Hodgson will be really disappointed with the result, particularly because of the way they played. It is tough on them because they really deserved more.

We've been worried about England defensively and saying if we need to progress we need to score goals. We should have scored two or three more and been out of sight.

Our chief football writer has given his England player ratings. This is his verdict, starting with the defence...

Joe Hart: Had little to do but some uncertain moments on the ball. No chance with the goal. 6.

Kyle Walker: Vibrant attacking performance in the first half justified his selection. May be put under more pressure against Wales but did well here. 7.

Gary Cahill: Booked but a solid, determined performance and a couple of crucial blocks. 7.

Chris Smalling: Steady. Strong in some physical exchanges and largely untroubled. 6.

Danny Rose: Some good crossing, especially in the first half but found himself in an aerial mismatch with Berezutski for Russia’s equaliser. 6.

• Harry Kane took six corners in the game, only one fewer than he managed in his 38 Premier League games in 2015/16.
• Vasili Berezutski’s late goal was Russia’s first attempt on target since the 17th minute of the game.
• England have failed to win their opening game at a EURO finals (D5 L4).
• Harry Kane didn’t have a single touch in the opposition box against Russia.
• Russia have kept just two clean sheets in their last 16 games at the EURO finals.
• Vasili Berezutski's goal was Russia's latest ever in normal time in a Euro finals game.

England captain Wayne Rooney: "I think we played well but we didn't take our chances. The lads are disappointed not to get win but we can take a lot of positives. We looked solid for 90 minutes. The performance was worthy of the win.

"We knew Russia had a danger man with the big lad up front. He's going to win headers and unfortunately they got a goal from it. 

"It's still a point and we have to move on."

• At 25y 293d, England’s starting 11 against Russia was their second-youngest ever at a major finals after the 2002 World Cup clash with Sweden (25y 206d).
• England mustered nine shots against Russia in the first-half, their most in a EURO finals first 45 since 2004 (11 v Croatia).
• Eric Dier is the 8th Tottenham player to score at a major tournament England, more than any other club.
• Dier’s strike was the first direct free-kick goal by an English player at a major finals since David Beckham v Ecuador at the 2006 World Cup.
• Dier scored despite never having attempted a single direct free-kick shot in his 65 Premier League appearances with Tottenham.

England manager Roy Hodgson told ITV: "When you dominate the game as much as we did, then when you concede it it will feel like a defeat. That's always the case with last minute goals. 

"There was a lot of good things. It was a good goal for the equaliser. We have to accept the disappointment and move on. There were a lot of things that gave me satisfaction.

"We cleared the corner well but it was incredible cross and header. Moment of unbelievable quality from their side and I don't think it was down to mismanagement.

"I thought we looked good at times. We deserved to win the game. It's a bitter pill to swallow. But if we can swallow it, I can be very hopeful going forward."

England boss Roy Hodgson on BBC Radio 5 live: "When you concede with one minute left, it is a bitter disappointment. After one dodgy spell at the start of the second half, if we take away that 15 minutes, we were in total control. I would have been happy with 1-0 but we conceded in the last minute. At least it wasn't a glaring error but we go away with a draw rather than a victory. 

"We changed a tiring Wayne Rooney with 15 minutes to go with Jack Wilshere, that's not a tremendous differently change because both help us play. The other one was Raheem Sterling, who had made a couple of long runs, with James Milner, with the thought to shore things up against us a bit and help with set-pieces. That didn't work out. 

"I thought we played well, in the first half I thought that was as good a performance as we are capable of giving. After that 15 minute spell, we got back on track and established our control again and we were unlucky not to score a second goal which would have put it behind doubt. It feels like defeat because we were preparing to celebrate a victory and we don't have that possibility now."

At full-time, it appears that Russian fans charged into a stand housing England fans, causing them to flee. A very ugly end to the night.
