Zlatan Ibrahimovic almost picks Thomas Vermaelen's pocket, but the defender hooks the ball away in the nick of time. Mess that up, and Ibrahimovic was away one-on-one.

This is as committed and passionate start as you could have hoped for if you support the Republic of Ireland.

Italy are playing exactly how you'd imagine an Italian team to play when they have nothing to play for and have made eight changes.

A quiet start so far by Zlatan Ibrahimovic, but Romelu Lukaku is hardly in the thick of things for Belgium either. Four touches of the ball. Was that second-half performance against the Republic of Ireland a flash in the pan?

David Simpson: Ireland need to win, so they pick a striker that hasn't scored for them in a nine-year international career.

To be fair, Daryl Murphy has made a decent start to this game...

Another fully committed challenge as Stephen Ward careers into Federico Bernardeschi, both men are left down and hurt. That allows players of both sides to have a pit stop. Fluid taken on board. Instructions too.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is not playing like a man who could be 75 minutes away from the curtain coming down on his international career. Slow, lumbering and not getting into good positions. He looks frustrated already.

A positive start from the Republic of Ireland, they are getting in to the Italy players. They are playing better quality balls forward and have willing runners in Shane Long and Daryl Murphy up front.

The Republic are first to every ball, they are snappy in the challenge but don't have that quality in the first third yet.

Can the Republic of Ireland blow Italy's defence apart?

It's like a home game for the Irish tonight - cheers for every touch by a man in a white shirt, jeers when Italy are on the ball, and the roars go louder when the Republic get near the Italy area, especially for that Jeff Hendrick shot.

Someone has let a smoke bomb off, and with the roof closed it is taking an age to clear, so there is a slightly acrid taste in the air along with the constant noise. Basically, we've got the atmosphere already - all we need now is an Ireland goal.

As it stands Belgium are going through. Ireland must win and they have started superbly. Martin O'Neill will be delighted. Roy Keane will be absolutely fuming. Which is a good mood for him.

They are aggressive in the tackle, quick to the ball, direct in the pass.

Lots of nice, patient passing from Belgium. They're not trying to force this with a draw enough to see them through at the moment.

Eventually, Thomas Meunier decides to try a cross into the box and it forces an unconvincing punch from Andreas Isaksson. He puts it straight back into the danger zone, but his team-mates clear. Lucky escape.

What a strike. Brilliant work from Daryl Murphy who wins the first ball and Jeff Hendrick shifts it on to his left foot. He was off balance so did well to get a clean strike away. Unfortunately, it was just off target.

    Salvatore Sirigu was definitely beaten.

  16. CLOSE!published at 10 mins

    Italy 0-0 Republic of Ireland

Lovely effort! Jeff Hendrick rapped the crossbar in the opener against Sweden and he's at it again, a fantastic crisp strike from maybe 25 yards, left-footed this time and it flies true as a dart but a yard wide of the top corner.

    Dimitri Payet-esque...

Italy force two corners but they both fly through the penalty area. Over the green, into the rough. Club too big.

Some tackling from 1986 so far from the Republic of Ireland. I'm all for it.

Jeff Hendrick hits Alessandro Florenzi with a, er, robust challenge. Gets the ball but takes the air out of Florenzi's lungs too. Lucky not to be booked.
