Stoke City chairman Peter Coates: "If Giannelli Imbula is as good as we think he is, he'll keep his value. You've got to think of it from a business point of view: we want him to be worth more than we paid for him. This move has been on and off for a few days. we said we were withdrawing the offer, then they came back."

"Wahbi Khazri is a potentially game-changing pick-up for Sunderland. He can score goals and create them, and he's played in a physical league. That is why managers go again and again to Ligue 1, because it's the closest equivalent to the Premier League."

"Remi Garde cut a very disconsolate figure at his news conference today. He's missed out on two strikers to his relegation rivals: Sunderland got Wahbi Khazri and Newcastle got Seydou Doumbia. He'll be thinking: 'What can I do? I've got no new bricks, I've just got straw.'"
