Sunderland are really going for it now. Jan Kirchhoff drives forward, lays it off to Dame N'Doye, who tries to pass the ball in past Adrian, but the West Ham keeper palms it strongly away.

The game is opening up now. Jack Rodwell went close before and he's at it again. This time the ball falls to him inside the area as Sam Byram mis-controls it but the former Leeds full-back somehow recovers to nick a touch as Rodwell scoops over.

"What a chance there, made by DeAndre Yedlin on the right going past Aaron Cresswell. Jack Rodwell should have scored. It was an inch-perfect pass, invitation to score, spurned.

"They're putting a big effort in at the minute Sunderland, there's no doubt about that."

Mark Noble pings it out to Sam Byram, who crosses first time directly to Andy Carroll. The big man smashes in a volley, which smacks off the cross bar from about six yards out. How did that not go in?

The Black Cats will be cursing their luck. They've gone very close to equalising but here come West Ham....

Sunderland should score. Deandre Yedlin is down the right, gets to the byline and cuts it back perfectly to Jack Rodwell. It's 10 yards out and on a plate but his low shot is well saved by Adrian's right boot. To make matters worse, the ball cannons back on to Rodwell's arm and it's a handball. 

Another West Ham penalty appeal and this one has more merit as Dimitri Payet tried to work the ball around Lamine Kone but referee Mike Dean shakes his head. 

Sunderland's Wahbi Khazri fancies this free-kick, it is central and just outside the area. He curls it nicely over the wall but it lacks power and Adrian is easily across to save. 

But down the other end, Dame N'doye breaks forward and slips in Jermain Defoe, who is brought crashing to earth by Sam Byram. That's a foul 20 yards out and a yellow card. 

David is right, Dimitri Payet has been a peripheral figure so far. West Ham need him on the ball more.

"I think West Ham are thinking about the Tottenham game on Wednesday, moving Dimitri Payet behind Andy Carroll.

"You think the Payet-Carroll combination could be dangerous, especially when breaking."

West Ham cry for a penalty as Michail Antonio hits John O'Shea in the mid-rift, nothing doing, but the ball falls to Dimitri Payet about 20 yards out and he shoots over. That was a decent chance. Shortly afterwards, Payet finds Victor Moses wide on the left, and although he strikes the ball firmly, Vito Mannone is well down to his right to save. 

Sunderland midfielder Jack Rodwellis into the action straight away as he shepherds the ball back under pressure to ensure it's a goal-kick. Well defended.

That's Manuel Lanzini's last contribution as he comes off for Victor Moses, on loan from Chelsea. For Sunderland, Jack Rodwell is on for Lee Cattermole.

"No change in formation for Sam Allardyce, but for sure Patrick van Aanholt and Deandre Yedlin are playing further forward trying to force back wide players Dimitri Payet and Michail Antonio to get attacking chances in the final third.

West Ham losing a grip on this a bit now. Dimitri Payet has been anonymous for periods in this game but as if to prove me wrong, he drives forward passes to Manuel Lanzini, who for some reason tries a backheel to no-one. 

Maybe West Ham need a boost? Sunderland are on top right now and Yann M'vila is the latest to waste a decent half-chance. Nice build-up play leads to the Frenchman having time and space to shoot from 25 yards but he shoots well wide.
