Dan Bell: Rafa is definitely the right man to save us, just worried we have left it too late. McClaren should have been sacked earlier

    Will he stay? Well...

When Rafael Benitez checked in for his first day at Real Madrid last summer, waving to Gareth Bale and nodding to Cristiano Ronaldo. I wonder how likely a relegation scrap in the Premier League seemed?

The future as a football manager is often only five or six games.

Can Rafa keep Newcastle up? Can Ranieri win the league?

    Newcastle United

Rafael Benitez has confirmed that he has a break clause in his contract should they be relegated from the Premier League this season.

The Magpies are second-bottom, one point from safety with 10 games left.

When asked about the clause, the Spaniard, 55, said: "Some people can see this as special, but it's normal.

"I am trying to stay in the Premier League and if I have a compromise for the future, it's because I am convinced that we will do well. I want to stay."

  5. Time to cash in?published at 18:45 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2016

    Leicester v Newcastle (20:00 GMT)

At the start of the season, you could have got odds of 5,000-1 for Leicester City to win the Premier League - the same as Elvis being found alive or Christmas Day being the warmest of the year. But with nine games to go, the Foxes are on course to do what many thought impossible - and dozens of punters could claim the biggest-priced single winner in sporting history.

What can 60p buy you? A chocolate bar? Not in this BBC office. A pint of milk or a second-class stamp perhaps.

But for self-employed DJ Nathaniel Whessell a 60p "investment" could net him £3,000.

The 20-year-old had pennies left over in his William Hill account and thought, "why not Leicester?"

"I've never followed Leicester - I'm a Brighton fan. I considered putting some money on them but with odds of 16-1 it didn't really seem worth it.

"I wasn't planning on putting 60p on anything, I just thought let's back an outsider for a laugh."

*Betting is bad, it will lose you money and friends and we do not condone it. But winning three grand from a 60p stake? Tremendous

Rafa Benitez is all smiles as he strides off the Newcastle team bus, shakes hands with the Leicester City steward and drives purposefully into the away dressing room like the seasoned Premier League pro that he is.

Can he turn this club's fortunes around?

    Leicester v Newcastle (20:00 GMT)

Leicester have lost just three games in the Premier League all season; Newcastle have won just six.

Tonight sees another managerial debut, and it may be the toughest first day in the office of Rafa Benitez's career.

He won the Champions League with Djibril Cisse. Can he now avoid the Championship with Papiss Cisse?

  9. Just another manic Mondaypublished at 18:30

    Leicester v Newcastle (20:00 GMT)

    Early August 2015.

Leicester parade new manager Claudio Ranieri to their fans ahead of the season opener against Sunderland.

A campaign of struggle is widely predicted, the summer loss of midfielder Esteban Cambiasso is felt harshly and 'marquee' summer signings Shinjo Okazaki, N'Golo Kante and Gokhan Inler barely resonate beyond the A594.

Twenty-four hours later and 188 miles up the road, another new manager makes his bow on the big stage.

Steve McClaren is the man tasked with restoring pride and performances to Newcastle United. After years of penny-pinching and petty feuds between boardroom and terraces the signings of Georginio Wijnaldum, Aleksandar Mitrovic, Chancel Mbemba and Florian Thauvin have emptied the coffers and filled the fans with hope.

Some seven months on, the sides meet tonight. Separated by 18 places, 36 points and an ocean of goodwill.

One of the managers has gone, to be replaced by a Champions League winner fresh from Real Madrid.

And he is staring at relegation.

The other manager is aiming to go five points clear at the top of the table, aiming to win the league with little Leicester City, to open up a closed shop, to make the impossible possible, to steer Robert Huth to a third Premier League winner's medal.

    It's a funny old game...
