"The news of Liverpool's collapse at Southampton will have certainly brightened up Manchester City and Manchester United as Jurgen Klopp's side would have drawn level with United on points and closed in on City if they had not squandered that two-goal lead at St. Mary's.
"United manager Louis van Gaal has effectively said their chances of reaching the top four rest on this game - so they will need to deliver an upgrade on recent performances to fulfil his wish."

Just having a look at the Manchester United players in the warm-up, they're all smiles and look rather relaxed for what is one of their biggest games of the season.
Forward Anthony Martial, in particular, seems to be reveling in the fact that he's up against Eliaquim Mangala and Martin Demichelis today. He could have a field day.
The Manchester City players seem much more focused, stern looks on the faces of Sergio Aguero and David Silva.

"Manchester United have underachieved more than Manchester City. You look at City they are in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, have some silverware already but looking at the game as an ex-City player I am concerned for today.
"If you take the bottom six teams out of the league and look at results then United would be second and City eighth, 10 points behind. United are better against the top teams.
"City need to do better than last week, the goals have dried up compared to last season and that is where the problem lies this season."
On Vincent Kompany's injury: "He has been mismanaged and played too many games in a short period of time since coming back from injury."
Man City v Man Utd (16:00 GMT)
Both City and United were in European action this week, with contrasting fortunes.
City made it through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the first time in their history after seeing off Dynamo Kiev.
United, on the other hand, went out of the Europa League, losing 3-1 on aggregate to bitter foe Liverpool.
A loss today and that's twice in a week where the boys in red have been done over by their rivals. Unacceptable.

Let's be honest, this game isn't exactly the most exciting of Manchester derbies is it? City are clinging on to fourth spot while United are in sixth - four points further back.
The Premier League form book? One win in five for City, one point out of a possible nine for United. Poor.
Neither side are close to challenging for the title, so there's a lack of spark from what we have seen over the last few seasons.
The build-up has been subdued too. Both captains are out injured, while neither manager had anything interesting to say about the other.
Where's the anger? Where's the hostilities? Let's wait and see if it transpires on the pitch.

Manchester City make four changes to the side that drew with Dynamo Kiev in midweek. Bakary Sagna, Raheem Sterling, Martin Demichelis and Eliaquim Mangala all come in.
City XI: Hart, Sagna, Demichelis, Mangala, Clichy, Fernandinho, Toure, Navas, Sterling, Silva, Aguero
Manchester United make two changes to the side that went out of the Europa League against Liverpool. Matteo Darmian comes in at right-back in place of Guillermo Varela and Morgan Schneiderlin replaces Marouane Fellaini in midfield.
United XI: De Gea, Darmian, Smalling, Blind, Rojo, Schneiderlin, Carrick, Lingard, Mata, Martial, Rashford
Man City v Man Utd (16:00 GMT)
The 'Jose to Manchester United' chat had gone a bit quiet over the last few weeks, until someone decided to stick their 50p worth in and it's all been cranked up again.
Spanish newspaper El Pais says Mourinho has signed a pre-contract agreement, external to replace Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford.
With Pep Guardiola already agreeing to take up the reigns at rivals Manchester City next term the 2016-17 derbies will be a more tantalising prospect that today's.
Man City v Man Utd (16:00 GMT)
No Nicolas Otamendi for Manchester City so Martin Demichelis and Eliaquim Mangala are in central defence.
Marouane Fellaini is only on the bench for Manchester United with Morgan Schneiderlin coming in.
Full team news to come.
