"No more than they deserve. Shrewsbury have shown no appetite to keep it. They will have to change their shape or balance."

That goal sums up the evening so far.

Morgan Schneiderlin wins a header all too easily on the right, the ball drops to Chris Smalling inside the penalty area and his scuffed shot bounces into the net.

Not quite sure why Smalling was still up field. Perhaps he feels there is no need to defend... He may have a point.

Memphis Depay slips the ball into Anthony Martial inside the penalty area, he turns smartly but his shot it blocked by Junior Brown.

The ball loops into the air, goalkeeper Jayson Leutwiler punches half clear and Jermaine Grandison scrambles clear.

    Shrewsbury 0-0 Manchester United

Shrewsbury may not be playing very well as an attacking unit but defensively they are doing okay.

The longer this goes goalless, the more they will dream of a replay at Old Trafford.

Eighteen - that's eighteen - of the 22 players have spent the majority of their time in the Shrewsbury defensive/Manchester United attacking half.

Not much sign of an upset at this stage.

"The two Shrewsbury forwards are more worried about stopping Ander Herrera and Morgan Schneiderlin playing. There is no threat coming from Shrewsbury whatsoever."

  9. GREAT SAVE!published at 30 mins

    Shrewsbury 0-0 Manchester United

Surely the opener is on it's way.

Anthony Martial gets the ball inside the penalty area, strokes the ball towards goal, but goalkeeper Jayson Leutwiler sticks his foot out and partially saves it.

The ball still looks like looping into the net but Abu Ogogo scrambles back and heads the ball off the line.

Shrewsbury are - somehow - still level.

Memphis Depay and Juan Mata are behind the ball.

No Cheltenham Town antics here (look at their free kick at the weekend on Youtube).

Depay hammers it but the ball hits teammate Anthony Martial and flies over the bar.

For all that Shrewsbury have been poor, they are almost 30 minutes into a fifth round tie against Manchester United and still level.

Wait a minute... Jermaine Grandison concedes a free kick on the edge of his penalty area.

    Big chance United...

Louis van Gaal's side have controlled the early phase of the game but it has been pretty uninspiring stuff so far,

Memphis Depay has caught the eye, mainly with two efforts wildly off target although he did force a good save from Shrewsbury Town keeper Jayson Leutwiler,

It's a cold night in Shropshire but United's fans are in good heart. They have barely stopped singing since the first whistle.

This resembles a practice match at the moment.

Manchester United's attack against Shrewsbury's defence.

This had all the promise of a blood-and-thunder cup-tie. Promises are sometimes broken.

It is all United still and by all, I mean all.

The Shrewsbury fans raise the volume with a lengthy chant of 'Salop'.

I'm told Salop is an Old English abbreviation of Shropshire by the way...

Sam Hartles: Why does LVG always play the same formation, what's the point playing 2 holding midfielders against a team playing 5 in defence.

Anthony Muindi: Van Gaal should have gone with more English players. I think United will struggle to cope with Shrewsbury's intensity

    Shrewsbury's intensity?!!

Ander Herrera is the next Manchester United player to take a pot shot at goal.

It's no better. The crowd behind need danger money as another wayward strike from 25 yards flies among the masses.

They played 'Eye of the Tiger' pre-match but Shrewsbury resemble more of a pussy cat so far.

Where are the crunching tackles? The hurrying and harrying? Manchester United can't believe how comfortable things are.
