    BBC World Service

Shrewsbury midfielder Richie Wellens has been speaking to BBC World Service about the match though.

He made one appearance for United before leaving the club in 2000.

On being told by Sir Alex Ferguson that his contract would not be renewed:

He said: “I can feel it in my stomach still, being in the manager’s office and hearing him say: ‘We are not giving you a new contract’. That will stay with me forever, that gut-wrenching, horrible feeling.

"They hold a special place in my heart, even though it took me a couple of years to get over the disappointment of being released. I didn’t go back to the club to watch games, because I wanted to get over it and make a career for myself."

    Imagine your frustration...

You are a Manchester United fan and your team have just drawn them in the FA Cup fifth round.

But - because of a three-minute cameo for Doncaster against Stalybridge - you are cup tied.

Richie Wellens, we feel for you.

The ex-United man, now at Shrewsbury, will have to watch from the stands.

Shrewsbury v Manchester United (19:45 GMT)

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at Greenhous Meadow

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal - rather like his team - has been stumbling along in recent weeks amid the fog of speculation surrounding his future.

There has appeared no great appetite from United's executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward to sack the Dutchman but it is hard to see how he could possibly survive defeat here tonight in the FA Cup fifth round tie against Shrewsbury Town.

They are currently languishing in the bottom four of League One. Win tonight, though, and surely it is all over for Van Gaal.

Richard Tugwell:  Honey I shrunk the attendance. (Judging by the empty spaces at Ewood Park on Sunday, perhaps Blackburn?)
