    Germany 0-1 England

England have a free-kick in a position not too dissimilar to one which eventually led to their opening goal. Alex Greenwood again is the player to deliver, but it is met by a firm defensive header.

"My concern when I saw Toni Duggan up there on her own was that she could become isolated, but the players around her have got so much energy - Jordan Nobbs, Demi Stokes and Jill Scott - they are constantly supporting her."

England try to break clear on the counter, Toni Duggan looking to set Demi Stokes clear with a long pass from close to the halfway line. The Manchester City player scurries after it, but is hustled out of the way by a pair of German defenders.

  4. PENALTY APPEALpublished at 30 mins

    Germany 0-1 England

England left-back Alex Greenwood blocks the run of German opponent Dzsenifer Marozsan inside the Lionesses penalty area. Penalty? The Germans want one. The referee thinks otherwise.

    Germany 0-1 England

Brief respite for England. Demi Stokes pounces on a poor German clearance on the edge of the area, but skies well over the crossbar. It would have been decent if it was a rugby conversion...

England still on the back foot as Germany do most of the probing. A loose ball breaks to Dzsenifer Marozsan outside the Lionesses area, but she lashes it over.

Another free-kick inside the England half for the Germans. It is another well-worked move, a couple of passing triangles finding space on the right flank. But England keeper Karen Bardsley commands her area superbly to climb the high ball.

The referee reaches for her back pocket for the first time - and it is England defender Gilly Flaherty who sees a yellow card wafted in her face.

Her offence? Jumping into the back of Alexandra Popp near the halfway line.

Germany try to pump the ball into the England box, but the delivery is poor and the Lionesses clear.

It would completely wrong to say that Germany are battering on the English door. They're not. But they are asking a few questions of the England defence.

Tabea Kemme cuts in from the left flank, flashing a snapshot toward the inside of the near post. But England keeper Karen Bardsley is alert, dropping low to save and hold. The ball stick to her gloves like warm chewing gum sticks to the bottom of your trainers.

Most dangerous time to concede is just after you've scored. Says who? Says everyone. Germany try to put that theory to the test, but Jill Scott is back helping out her defence to clear a set-piece.

"This was just whipped in with pace and Toni Duggan just had to direct the header into the botton corner. Fantastic from Duggan - the awareness of where the goalkeeper was. England have started the game really, really well and they have deserved this goal."

Toni Duggan's opener is the first goal that Germany have conceded in 560 minutes, I'm reliably informed.

Perfect start for England! Toni Duggan climbs highest inside a packed German penalty area to neatly flick a header into the far corner. Alex Greenwood tees up the opener with a delicious cross after her initial free-kick came back out to her.

England growing into this contest nicely. Jill Scott is playing quite high, looking to support lone striker Toni Duggan.

"Alex Greenwood had more time than she thought. She could have taken a touch. Keep the ball down and make the keeper work."

Big chance for England. Katie Chapman swings in a ball from the right flank, which is cleared by a sliding German defender. But it falls nicely to Alex Greenwood, who has space and time. Greenwood has a rush of blood to the head though, smashing wildly over. The Liverpool defender slaps her head in frustration, possibly shouting a Homer Simpson-style 'D'oh!'.

    Germany 0-0 England

European champions Germany race out of the blocks quicker than Usain Bolt. Well, almost. The Germans, playing in an unfamiliar all-red kit, hog most of the early possession. They win a corner on the right, England partially clear, but a long-range shot flies harmlessly over Karen Bardsley's crossbar.

  20. KICK-OFFpublished at 22:45

    Germany 0-0 England

Right then - here we go. The referee does a quick head count, toots her whistle for the first time and England have the honour of kicking off the action. Game on!
