Ahead of kick-off, an emotional Goodison Park paid tribute to the Hillsborough victims following this week's inquest verdict that the 96 Liverpool fans were unlawfully killed. 

Campaigning relatives of the victims were introduced to the stadium, while messages of support were held up by Toffees fans. Everton manager Roberto Martinez shared a warm embrace with Margaret Aspinall - one of leading campaigners - on the touchline.

"It was a very touching tribute. the two football clubs have been shoulder and shoulder and real inspiration for everyone," said the Spaniard.  

"It was an important moment for the whole city, a major boost to get that justice. The families have been a major inspiration. That tribute was touching, emotional and you could feel it in the air."

Crystal Palace boss Alan Pardew: "For long periods we looked in control of the game especially in the first half.

"They had a good spell in the second half and the crowd got involved and they scored right at the end of that period. We needed to score and we didn't. The game came down to two set plays and that is the margin we are at.

"This was a tight game, Rafa has improved Newcastle in terms of the defensive structure. It is difficult to get at them and they have edged a win here.

"They did well today, they did not play like a team in the bottom three and I am not sure they are.

“I thought the reception I got was muted, which was nice. A lot of people understand that I managed here to the best of my ability and we had some good times that I lean on."

Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez: "We still have to play another two games. We will enjoy this weekend because we won and then we will focus on the next one against Aston Villa which will be a tough one.

"The victory means a lot, it gives us momentum, confidence and a connection with the fans.

"Hopefully it will be the same against Tottenham when we can avoid relegation and everyone will be happy.

"The free-kick was fantastic and the penalty save, I was really pleased for them. Hopefully Karl (Darlow) does not need to save anymore until the end of the season.

"For me the penalty is not clear, he is jumping with his hand, no one asked for the penalty of complained, so for me it was a surprise.

"I know the run in will be tough, we will try and do our best and win. We have to have confidence."

Stoke manager Mark Hughes: “In terms of performances it was significantly better than the last three games. It was important to mix it up today but we should have finished the game off.

“I thought the guys that came in did so to great effect.

“For 93 minutes we were comfortable but the referee has made a poor decision. It is a soft one but it was difficult to take, certainly we were the better team.”

Sunderland goalscorer Jermain Defoe speaking to Sky Sports: “I thought we played well today, first half was scrappy but it is a difficult place to come. I thought they played well but you always need that bit of luck and we got it in the end.

“Everyone worked hard and put a shift in and we will fight to the end. The lads gave the ball to me and I was confident I would score.

“I didn’t realise about any delay, when it is a penalty you try and relax and there was no negative thoughts in my mind. It is a massive relief, we will take the point.”

If Sam Allardyce does keep Sunderland up then he ought to be donating his survival bonus to Jermain Defoe's retirement fund. Or at least be buying him a pint. And Big Sam knows it.

"Where would we be without Jermain Defoe? Relegated probably. The other lads haven’t scored enough goals, Jermain has kept us close to be out of trouble," he says.

"I am going home satisfied it is a point gained rather than two dropped.

"We have our destiny in our own hands and have got to play better so if the referee slips up we have got to make sure it doesn’t cost us. It was a scruffy scrappy game, we have got to win that game in hand and certainly next week against Chelsea."

Stoke's Peter Crouch who set up his side's goal amid claims of a foul on Sunderland defender Younes Kaboul:

"I know Younes and it wasn’t a foul put it that way.

"We deserved to win, our keeper has not had much to do and a little mistake has cost us and it feels like a defeat.

"We were the better side and deserved to win, it always feels frustrating to concede in the last minute but it was certainly an improvement so we take heart from that."

We are up and running in the late game at Arsenal, where Norwich now know that a win or a point would be massive in their fight against the drop.

Roberto Martinez will be feeling a little more relaxed as he kicks back on the sofa with a glass of red later. But will it save his skin at Everton?

"The win was very important - it has been an emotional time. We had to win. We had to dig deep, we showed were were a team and that we have character," says the Spaniard.

On Toffees fans protesting about his reign: "In football you have to concentrate on affecting the game and just winning. The winning feeling allows you to move on. That's what we can take from today."

"Those aspects (fans organising banners to be flown over Goodison) are not for me. My concentration is preparing the players and preparing for the game."

Sunderland manager Sam Allardyce: "It is a brilliant point in the end but for me one that could have been a win rather than the draw. Obviously they didn’t deserve their goal because it was a blatant foul on Younes Kaboul and we should have had a penalty when Geoff Cameron flicks the ball with his hand and referee and his assistant don’t see it. 

"Those things have gone against us today which has not allowed us to be in a position to win it. 

"It is a very precious point and in the end the referee was brave and good enough to make the right decision for us for the penalty."

Newcastle matchwinner Andros Townsend: "Winning is a huge relief.

"I was going to shoot the other side of the wall, but they had such tall players, that I decided to wrong-foot the keeper and it worked out perfectly.

"It could be a massive three points and I am glad I played my part since I have joined and hopefully I will score a few more.

"The team are buzzing in there, it is a massive three points.

"Palace set up to relegate us, from minute one they were time wasting. Sunderland dropped points which is another bonus for us.  We live to fight another day and now we prepare for Villa."

Young Everton defender Matthew Pennington is grinning like a man who has just won the Euromillions. A Premier League debut, a home win and an impressive personal display. He'll probably win the lottery if he buys a ticket tonight #winning.

"It is a surreal moment for me and a proud moment for family and friends," said the centre-back, who has spent most of the season on loan at League One side Walsall. 

"I'm grateful to get a win on my debut, it's a bit different to Walsall! I found out that I was playing a couple of hours before kick-off, although I thought I might be involved with the injuries and suspensions. 

"Hopefully I'll get another chance - but I'll have to take it from here."

Bournemouth are not mathematically safe having lost five of the past six matches but they should be fine. Shouldn't they?! 

Cherries manager Eddie Howe reckons his team deserved more at Goodison: "I think we were worth a draw, the two goals we conceded were out of context.

"We were solid and our keeper was a spectator for most of the game. When chances came we weren't clinical enough."
