  1. 'A lot riding on this'published at 15:40 British Summer Time 8 May 2016

Man City v Arsenal (16:00 BST)

    Guy Mowbray
BBC Match of the Day commentator

"Whilst not the title decider it might have been, there's still a lot riding on this.

"An Arsenal win would guarantee them at least third place - and a top-four finish for an incredible 20th year in a row.

"With Villa at home for the last game they should get there anyway, which makes this match more about City.

"Manuel Pellegrini's men may need to win their final two games for him to bequeath Pep Guardiola a Champions League place, and it would be a shame for him to leave on a down note of not doing it.

"Although Wednesday's tame display in Madrid was a downer that will take some recovering from."

  4. 'It's been disappointing, not good enough'published at 15:36 British Summer Time 8 May 2016

Man City v Arsenal (16:00 BST)

    Robbie Savage
Ex-Leicester midfielder at Etihad Stadium for 5 live Sport

"Man City's energy was so, so poor against Real Madrid. This season they have fizzled out, and looking at the Manuel Pellegrini reign as a whole I think it's been disappointing, not good enough. He's now leaving a City squad that needs eight to 10 new players.

"It's a massive game today but there will be so much change in the summer."

Poor old Vincent Kompany. Such a likeable chap, such a brittle body. The Manchester City captain has played just 22 matches this season - and says he will now miss Euro 2016.

The Belgium defender, 30, was substituted after 10 minutes of City's Champions League semi-final second-leg defeat by Real Madrid on Wednesday.

He said it was "very sad news" but promised he would not "give up".

"I trust my friends and team-mates to do well and do us proud at the next European Championships in France," he added.

"I am now officially their most fervent supporter and I will be there to support them."

Despite delivering the Premier League title and the League Cup in his first season, Manuel Pellegrini's Man City reign will go down as something of a failure. Don't blame me, blame football. Such are the stakes brought about by the money that has poured into the modern game (City being a big beneficiary), Manuel simply hasn't met the expectations placed upon him - one League Cup in two seasons ain't enough.

At least the well-mannered Chilean should get a decent send-off today from the City fans. However, I imagine most of them won't be too sad to see him go, especially with Pep waiting in the wings.

Man City v Arsenal (16:00 BST)

    Manuel PellegriniImage source, Reuters

This is also a mighty big game for Manchester City, for a number of reasons.

Reason one is that their involvement in next season's Champions League is not yet secure and having reached the semis this year they will not want to be sitting out the chance to improve on that next season. It is not something Manuel Pellegrini will want to write in his handover note for Pep.

Reason two, is that they will not want Pellegrini to sign off at the Etihad with a defeat. He deserves better than that.

  9. 'City fans expected a little more'published at 15:22 British Summer Time 8 May 2016

Man City v Arsenal (16:00 BST)

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Stuart Brennan, Manchester Evening News' Man City correspondent: "Manuel Pellegrini at City has been a mixed picture.

"He has secured silverware and he was also given the target of improving us in the Champions League. He succeeded in that too, and of course this year we reached the semi-finals. Under him there's been no turmoil, unlike say Roberto Mancini's reign.

"But you do just feel that City fans expected a little more."

  10. Freddie at Citypublished at 15:19 British Summer Time 8 May 2016

Man City v Arsenal (16:00 BST)

The first lot of fans are taking their seats to welcome out the goalkeepers for their warm-up. Dedicated fellas the keepers, always the first out.

Andrew Flintoff is in the house as well, currently helping himself to a Celebration. I think it might have been a Snickers.

    Top quality journalism this.

Man City v Arsenal (16:00 BST)

    Arsene WengerImage source, Gett

"The future of Arsenal football club depends on this game."

Arsene Wenger is starting to sound a bit like Doc Brown when he finds out Biff has the Sports Almanac. And the Gunners boss does not sound like he is saying this to be dramatic. For him, a top-three finish is a must, to avoid either a Champions League play-off or missing out on the competition entirely.

You see, qualifying for the Champions League proper is kind of his thing...

“Our target now is to secure a position in the Champions League next year," he told the Arsenal website., external "If possible, to get second place or at least secure third place. On Sunday we can achieve that. We still have two games, and if we win those two games we will be alright."

If only Arsene could jump in the DeLorean and go back to 2004.

  13. 'City have to win today'published at 15:08 British Summer Time 8 May 2016

    Guy Mowbray
BBC Match of the Day commentator, MOTD2 Extra

"This is a bigger deal for Manchester City because Arsenal have another bite next week against Villa.

"But City have to win today and, judging by their performance in midweek against Real Madrid, that might be easier said than done."

There will have been more than a few envious glances cast in the direction of yesterday's celebrations at the King Power by staff and fans from City and Arsenal.

Despite their superior wealth, stronger squad (in theory) and greater Premier League experience, both have been outdone domestically by a team who escaped relegation by the skin of their teeth 12 months ago.

How did that happen? That is a question for the summer. First, there is a Champions League spot to secure.
