Now we know why Mousa Dembele had that moment of madness at Stamford Bridge. It was so he could sit today out and hand out 'certificates of thanks' to the Spurs ballboys at half-time instead. That's the nearest the Belgian will get to the White Hart Lane pitch for a while...

I have Spurs down as one of the favourites, if not the favourite, to win the title next season. They may have fallen short this time around, but when you consider this is the closest they have come to winning a title since the days of muddy pitches back in the early '60s, the players in their ranks and their overall consistency, you can only see Spurs going on to claim it next season.

"Saints are playing well, to their credit. They have stifled Spurs' momentum which was so impressive in the first 15 minutes.

"Southampton are a team who play with spells of impressive, powerful football."

Enjoy that? Good. A very entertaining half of Premier League football ends in an honourable draw.

Second-placed Spurs are four points of Arsenal - ahead of their game at Man City later - as it stands.

Now it is almost Spurs who nab a half-time lead. Saints centre-back Jose Fonte is dragged out right to deal with a long ball, is mugged on the byeline, leaving Harry Kane bearing down on goal. But the Spurs top scorer cannot beat an outstretched Fraser Forster from the corner of the six-yard box. That should be that...

Almost a Saints sucker punch! Goalscorer Steven Davis breaks from midfield, looks left for support and finds Dusan Tadic. His low cross is hacked clear by Ryan Mason who looked - momentarily - to be getting his feet in a tangle.

Saints pump the ball forward. One last attack? Dusan Tadic theatrically goes down under a challenge on the left edge of the box, looking inquisitively at ref Jon Moss. A shake of the head is not what he wants to see.

Any sign of a third goal? Nope. Tottenham scour the right flank for an opening, but end up down Dead End Street. Christian Eriksen concedes a foul and eases the pressure on Saints.

Five minutes until a well-deserved swig of half-time water for all 22 players. They might even get an orange. The sting has gone out of this match in the past minute.

Waaaay! Saints fans greet Danny Rose's wayward potshot, after Saints partially clear the Spurs set-piece, with playful jeers. That troubled Dave in Row F rather than Fraser Forster.

Watch out Spurs fans in the front row - Cuco Martina is landing! The Saints right-back flies over the advertising hoardings like Superman after being outmuscled by Danny Rose in a tussle to reach Toby Alderweireld's long ball.. Thankfully he is unhurt. But he's conceded a corner...

Ooops, the natives are not happy. Ref Jon Moss does stop the game when Southampton attacker Sadio Mane goes down close to the halfway line. Cue boos.

"Well, he didn't stop it when Kyle Walker went down!" say hundreds of the home fans presumable.

    Ten minutes until the break....

"Hugo Lloris didn't get a firm hand on it and it trickled into the corner of the net. Tottenham lost the ball in the first instance because of a poor goal-kick from Lloris.

"But a good move by Davis towards the near post - he really got his angles right. In recent moments Southampton have gained a foothold in this game."

Look away Roy Hodgson. Spurs right-back Kyle Walker is down, in some considerable pain, after taking a whack in the build-up to that Saints equaliser. Ref Jon Moss waits until the England international is back on his feet before restarting the game. You can look again Roy.

Deserved equaliser for Southampton! Route one stuff really. Right-back Cuco Martina pumps the ball up to Dusan Tadic, whose lovely control and neat pass inside is tucked in first time by midfielder Steven Davis.

Hugo Lloris got a hand to the shot, which wasn't all that powerful, and might feel that he really ought to have stopped the shot.

Very watchable is this game. Even from our Salford bunker. Much better than being sat in a sun-soaked beer garden.

Saints go back on the attack, Ryan Bertrand's low cross whipped across the box and Spurs hack clear.
