    Tottenham 0-0 Southampton

Southampton have only lost one of their past eight Premier League games - no wonder they're confident. Tottenham trying to assert some authority, probing down the left flank through Danny Rose but unable to create any openings.

Positive start from Southampton. Shane Long leading from the front as usual, scurrying after the Spurs defence like a Yorkshire Terrier after a tennis ball.

Mauricio Pochettino speaking on BBC Radio London: "The players feel well. They are strong, and of course we've learned a lot.

"When you lose big things you'll always feel sad and disappointed. But sometimes you need to remember those feelings and instead work very hard so you never have that feeling again.

"In football things can happen that are hard to justify. But people who play football know that these things sometimes happen. I still think there are a lot of positives."

Disappointment at missing out on the title? You'd have never have guessed it. The Spurs fans are in great voice as the teams stroll out of the tunnel. Almost show-time...

Southampton find themselves in a similar position, knowing that three points would equal their best ever Premier League total and go a long way to ensuring Europa League qualification.

Such are the permutations for that just now that Saints could finish seventh and miss out on Europe, or finish eighth and qualify.

It won't be easy after the disappointment of Monday night at Chelsea, but Spurs have plenty of motivation to lift themselves for this game against Mauricio Pochettino's former club.

Here, in ascending order of significance, are their reasons to be fairly cheerful:

    • A goal would ensure their highest ever Premier League tally.
    • A point would guarantee them a highest ever Premier League finish.
    • A win would mean that only a freakish reversal in goal difference could deny them second place, and most of all they'd be all but certain of finishing above Arsenal for the first time since 1995.

Harry Kane looks like he's just stuck his head under the sprinkler (or more likely the shower), slicking back his barnet before heading out into the tunnel. The Spurs striker arrives first, joined by Hugo Lloris and then the rest of the home side.

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino: "We need to be proud even though we are disappointed.

"I think it is very important to keep our position – we need to fight and try to win games to be sure of second. This is now our objective and our challenge.

"Saints have a very good squad and a great manager and showed this season great quality. We expect a very tough game."

    David Pleat
Former Tottenham boss at White Hart Lane for 5 live Sport

"Tottenham lost their composure against Chelsea and therefore lost the result they needed. Chelsea too were wound up, and Spurs reacted poorly. They will accept that they did things in that game that were out of character, and as a consequence they have been punished by the Football Association. Tottenham lost it, and have no-one to blame but themselves.

"But Spurs need to learn from this season. There's is a young, fluid team and they really can go on from here."

White Hart Lane looks like the White Isle. Scorchio. A bloke in the Spurs end even has a hankie on his head. The stands are filling up nicely, but plenty are still outside topping up the tan before making a dash to the turnstiles.

    Bradley Allen

"There's is a tinge if disappointment here among the Tottenham supporters. It wasn't to be, but it still has been a fabulous season. Spurs have played some spectacular football this season and they have to pick themselves up.

"Southampton have a decent side and an excellent manager, so today is far from a gimme for Spurs."

    Guy Mowbray
BBC Match of the Day commentator, MOTD2 Extra

"I thought in the early parts of the season, the way Son played meant Spurs had another striker who could take some pressure off Harry Kane. They have someone pretty good there.

"It is going to be a huge summer for transfer deals. Way busier than last summer.

"I'm not sure Spurs will spend a lot of money. But I think the others will. Klopp at Liverpool, Conte at Chelsea, Guardiola at City - that will spark an awful lot off."

James: Outrageous that Dier and Lamela are playing today. Both should have had reds against Chelsea.

Lotak: No shame in Spurs finishing second. We need a strong performance in our last game at the Lane this season and secure that spot.

Viera151: See if Arsenal come second, does that constitute an improvement over the last decade?

    Mark Schwarzer
Leicester City keeper on MOTD2 Extra

"I just hope this is not John Terry's last opportunity. If I was Antonio Conte I would keep him on at Chelsea. During my time there he was an unbelievable professional. I can't speak highly of him.

"People go through ups and downs and I think he has learned a lot. I just hope this isn't the way it finishes and he gets to play again in front of those fans.

"The club may look at it and wonder if they want to see Terry play for another club after Chelsea? Could you imagine him playing in another shirt?"
