Please don't be fooled by Rooney in this type of role, he's played it many times and more often than not is poor and gives the ball away. Today is the exception not the rule.

Rooney oozes class in this deeper role.

Everton have managed to stem the bleeding it seems as Manchester United fail to get through their backline for a few minutes. Roberto Martinez is giving lengthy and detailed instructions to one of his players.

Rob Lyndsell: Rooney in a deeper role behind Kane, Alli, Vardy and Barkley. Fantastic prospect.

David Baker: If any match is set up for a Tony Hibbert thunderbolt it's today.

  7. Rooney running the showpublished at 17:40 British Summer Time 23 April 2016

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at Wembley

"Wayne Rooney is playing in what you could call his quarterback role and his is running this game for Manchester United. He is showing his full range of passes, creating chances and has even cleared one off the line.

"Penny for the thoughts of England manager Roy Hodgson on what he has seen from his international captain so far?

"Everton are clinging on by their fingernails here with only Romelu Lukaku offering any hope."

Everton finally get out of their half but Leighton Baines fizzes a cross into the palms of David de Gea. Disappointing.

    Everton 0-0 Man Utd

    Danny Mills
Ex-Man City defender at Wembley for BBC Radio 5 live

"This is like the Manchester United of old.

"In terms of possession and territory, it is all Manchester United at the moment.

"Everton have hardly put three passes together or got out of their own half.

"But with all the dominance, United have to score in the next five minutes to make that count."

"That man Martial is normally so cool and calm in front of goal. He tried to smash it on his left foot but would have been better off caressing it. Great football again from Manchester United though. Everton can't cope at the moment. They are getting run ragged by United's pace and movement."

The Manchester United front three or four are all over this, there's a goal coming. Jesse Lingard picks out Anthony Martial on the left of the area, he's played onside by a half-baked Phil Jagielka, but the French prospect goes for improbable power from an improbable angle and can only launch it into the stands.

Tom Paton: This is like a basketball game atm.

Roger Dodger: Rooney needs to play deep for England instead of Henderson.

Scott Anderton: Rooney in midfield 👏.

Manchester United have had 63% of the play so far and are connecting with over 90% of their passes. If it was 15% quicker it would be lethal. But still a good start from the men in red. Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial have the Everton back four on toast.

"Lukaku was in - again - but his touch was poor - again. He has to get it tighter, keep it close to his body. It is so open though. There have been big chances for both teams. Manchester United are playing a high line - with pace in behind there'll be chances for Everton. End to end!"

    Danny Mills
Ex-Man City defender at Wembley for BBC Radio 5 live

"Twice Man United have been caught out right through the centre of their defence. The pitch is spongy and soft, the ball won't skip through.

"For the second time Lukaku's touch let him down."

Everton are not really in the game but for the second time they connect with Romelu Lukaku with a big punt over the top. Go back to basics lads, because United can't handle it.

Chris Smalling is the man left in a cold sweat as he misjudges the flight of the ball and sees Lukaku tear past him but again the Belgian's touch is awful and the chance has gone. Big game nerves from the big man?

Like your older man - me - on the 5-a-side court, Wayne Rooney gets the ball deep and just waits for the whippet-like Anthony Martial to sprint down the left, before finding him with a peach of a pass. Martial is giving Muhamed Besic all sorts of trouble.
