IMMSY: Young players have the pace and older players have the responsibility... Rooney just showed it.

Paul lummis: Why can't United attack like this every game? Very open and entertaining game so far.

"That was a great opportunity. The diagonal ball comes in and it is probably too close to the goalkeeper.

"There is not an awful lot Lingard can do with that chance, he doesn’t quite an a big enough angle. He had to hope for a toe poke through his legs."

Maybe Wayne Rooney in a deep midfield role is the future. He is spraying it about in almost Paul Scholes style. He tackles like Scholes too.

"Everton should be 1-0 down. That is an amazing chance. A bad miss from Lingard - what a ball from Rooney though. The creativity, the vision.

"Lingard, Martial and Rashford all have pace and all look to score goals. That's horrible to defend against."

Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford link up with a lovely bit of play on the fringe of teh box but John Stones chucks himself at a tackle and slides it away.

Then Lingard is in on goal from Wayne Rooney's pass but he can't get it past Joel Robles!

What a chance - a terrific pass from Rooney.

  7. Manchester United target Besicpublished at 17:25 British Summer Time 23 April 2016

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at Wembley

"Manchester United are clearly making Everton's makeshift right-back Muhamed Besic a target and Anthony Martial is already having success.

"At the other end Everton are attempting to pressurise Manchester United into mistakes and that was a great chance which Romelu Lukaku could not quite convert."

Cleverly starting for Everton. Hope he has a blinder to silence all those Utd fans who made him a scapegoat for their underperformance last season.

Wayne Rooney's workrate has never been in question Jack. Just his impact.

Here he is though, whipping in a free-kick and Marcos Rojo heads it across goal and wide. Decent opening.

"Romelu Lukaku should have scored. He made the chance himself but he should have scored.

"What a clearance from Wayne Rooney sprinting back. That's that deeper role we've been talking about..."

What a chance! Ah Romelu Lukaku should have scored, Everton clear a United corner and all of a sudden the big man is in on goal.

He takes a poor touch which forces him wide, but he is able to dance away from David de Gea and shoot. OFF THE LINE - by Wayne Rooney of all people. Maybe he could play at centre-back for England?

Manchester United seeing all of the early ball, as is their style. Or philosophy. Muhamed Besic playing at full-back for Everton might be an area of weakness and Anthony Martial exposes him with a blistering run down the left, he glides across the turf! Skins John Stones too but then has his shot deflecetd away by the England man.

    Marvellous from Martial.

"Rooney is playing a very deep role at the moment, almost with Fellaini in front of him. A slightly different role, not a usual number 10 role that we see Wayne Rooney in.

"He will play absolutely anywhere in this football team but I am not sure it is his best position."
