The first half was a classic, the second less so. If you missed the whole 120 minutes you can watch the best of it here.

Poland and Portugal entered extra time for the second time at Euro 2016 – the last teams to do be in extra time twice at same Euros were France and Italy in 2000.

Only the Netherlands (7) have played more extra time game at the Euros than Portugal (6).

Robert Lewandowski scored the second quickest goal ever at the Euros (one minute and 40 seconds). Only Dmitri Kirichenko’s goal for Greece for Russia in 2004 was quicker (01:05).

Robbie Brady's penalty for the Republic of Ireland against France on Sunday (1:58) lasted four days as the second fastest European Championship goal.

Poland's opener ended a wait of 645 minutes for Lewandowski without scoring at the Euros, last scoring against Greece in 2012 (his first appearance in the tournament).

Portugal have won three of their four shootouts at major tournaments - winning twice against England and losing to Spain.

Renato Sanches became the youngest player to score in a knockout game at the Euros ever (18y 316d), and the third youngest overall to score in Euros history (behind Johan Volanthen and Wayne Rooney).

Nani has been involved in 50% of Portugal’s goals at this tournament (two goals and one assist).

James Liggins: Ugh, why did Portugal have to get through? They've drawn every game but they're in the last 4?! Not right.

Diego Suarez: Portugal might not play pretty football but they are solid at the back, they got a massive chance getting to the final now.

Sarah Morgan: Where's the Portuguese tradition of fast, attacking football gone? I've not found a team so boring since Greece in 2004 Euros.

Portugal have become the first team to reach a European Championship semi-final without winning a game in 90 minutes.

This is the fifth time they have reached the semi-finals in their seven European Championship appearances.

Only Luis Figo (5) has more assists in European Championship games than Nani (4).

You can watch highlights of this game at 23:30 BST on BBC One.

My advice is watch the first half, go and get yourself a beer while the second half and extra time are on and then watch the penalties.

Although I can't imagine my TV colleagues will find many highlights to show from those periods of football.

Renato Sanches showed why Bayern Munich were so keen to get him on board for next season with a pearler of a goal. His first in international football as well. You can watch the equalising goal for Portugal here.

Josh Cobb: They should make them all shoot from the halfway line

Alex Haworth: Portugal might win a game of football one day.

Joe Wedgwood: Portugal surely the worst team to make it to a Euro semis for a long, long time? Everyone else should hammer them.

Fair play to Portugal for reaching the semi-finals, but I'm not sure I've seen them play very well yet.

They will face either Belgium or Wales next Wednesday in Lyon.

The quarter-final between the Belgians and Welsh is tomorrow in Lille. Live on BBC One.

    Chris Waddle
Former England winger on BBC Radio 5 live

Good luck to Portugal but you've got to play better than this to win a tournament.

It was a very good save in the shootout from Rui Patricio, he read it. It was such a high standard but somebody had to miss. Portugal have got three wingers playing and they never went past people at all. They are relying on an 18-year-old to take people on. The ran out of ideas, they are very fortunate to be where they are.
